Came across the following news relating to Open-Loop Payments (Credit & Debit Cards) for public transport. Apparently the Prime Minister has made some comments concerning TNG Cards this afternoon.

Apple Pay has launched in South Korea today with 1 financial institutions.

Unfortunately users could only use AP at a limited number of merchants as most merchants’ terminals supports only Magnetic Stripe & Chip only.

Hopefully more FIs in Korea would offer AP which creates more users. When the number of AP users increases, I reckon merchants would gain some confidence in investing in a NFC-Capable Terminal!

Any idea what will be the next update which bank will able to support for Apple Pay?
*
IIRC CIMB is the only institution which has came out publicly on its plans to launch Apple Pay support for their cardholders. It was reported last year that the bank plans to launch support for AP in the 2H of 2023 (so, Jul-Dec 23 period?).

soyacincau.com/2022/08/18/cimb-support-apple-pay-in-the-second-half-of-2023/

As for the other banks, they may just launch AP out of the blue without sharing their AP plans (e.g. HSBC Malaysia), probably to have a "wow-factor".

I look forward to see how Credit/Debit Cards (Open-Loop Payments in general) would fit into the Multi-Lane Fast Flow (MLFF) Toll System that will be introduced in the future.

Out of curiosity, I got a new HSBC credit card and I tried adding it into Apple Pay. Interesting to note that the only way to authorize it was that I needed to contact the HSBC Contact Center. Did you all face the same thing as well for those who use HSBC credit card?
*
Not with HSBC Malaysia. But I was told that sometimes the attempt to enrol a new card into Apple Pay may be flagged by fraud protection system and therefore you have to call in to verify. Otherwise it could be because some of the info provided during set-up is incorrect (Expiry Month/Year or the CVV).

Coming soon?

This product just got announced today. It has nothing to do with Apple Pay / Google Wallet.

The product turns out to be a virtual card product with privacy & security as a selling point, similar to what BigPay has offered.

If cost of a goods is a deciding factor, then merchants have rights to decide what cards to accept
*
If you don't want to accept AMEX, just contact the merchant acquirer provider to disable the acquiring facility. This would ensure any attempts to make use of AMEX would be unsuccessful.

However, definitely agree that if the merchant has indicated clearly "No AMEX" prior to payment and the payer forced an AMEX payment through, the merchant should be allowed to void the transaction. But not enabling the AMEX facility would prevent this scenario from happening in the first place which avoids unnecessary conflicts.

It might be unfair to void transactions if the merchant has not indicated "No AMEX" prior to payment as some consumers may decide where to spend based on the merchants' acceptance of AMEX.

AMEX typically offers better rewards and has a loyal user-base which takes into consideration AMEX acceptance when choosing where to shop.

Following SUICA & PASMO, 3rd Japanese Transit card ICOCA now supported by AP starting June 27th.  :cool2:  When does our Msia open loop payment system will launch?

This is a great news!

Also for those that are travelling to Japan soon, you might face physical Suica & PASMO card shortages. However, you can get a digital version directly from Apple Wallet by paying for it with Apple Pay (tho some reports mentioned previously that Visa may not work for Suica purchases & reloads)

The only time to use EZLink is when the said EZLink has cashback for topup (eg top up $10, get 50c extra, up to $2)

Phone is so much more convenient to double click, pay with face value (face ID) :D

In places like NYC, London and Sydney (started recently), you don’t even need to unlock to pay for transit with EMV cards (typical Credit / Debit card). Suica & other Japanese transportation cards had this feature quite early on.

Just tap your phone and go if the transit provider supports Express Transit (ET)!

However it may require a separate deal with Apple to offer ET at the transit providers’ card readers.

I hope that Malaysia would offer ET from the beginning, tho the chances are slim. It’s just way more convenient.

Is OCBC bank supporting Apple Pay soon?

Just updated their Malaysian bank app, and noticed that the app supports Apple Wallet features
*
I am looking forward to the day where UOB and OCBC launch Apple Pay (AP) support since they offered it in SG.

It would significantly increase the reach of AP given the acquisition of Citi Malaysia’s consumer bank arm by UOB.

Also would be great if local names like RHB, Hong Leong & Public Bank would jump onto the AP bandwagon as these banks has massive cardholder base as well.

However, as compared to that in South Korea, I felt that the demand for / awareness of AP among local users is limited therefore I am not sure if banks are in a rush to even offer this service.

In Korea, AP is seen as a key differentiator and the awareness is high. Hyundai Card’s (currently the only bank that offers AP there) new cardholder numbers jumped massively in these few months since AP’s launch there and there are rumours that a few other major bank-related card companies intends to offer Apple Pay. You can find all kinds of positive stats on Hyundai Card AP support if you search around.

The awareness is so high to the extent where there were reports of Contactless-compatible card terminal shortages in the beginning as merchants rush to support AP to differentiate themselves from competitors. (In Korea’s case, most existing terminals do not support contactless payments)

Nonetheless, we can at least look forward to CIMB’s AP support that is scheduled to come in 2H2023. Hopefully this could help in raising AP awareness as CIMB has a large cardholder base too!

Not related to Malaysia:
Apple Pay has just launched in Morocco, the 2nd country in Africa where AP is available after South Africa.

In addition, there's rumours that AP would be launching in Vietnam in the near future.

Seems that AP is being expanded into new countries on a relatively fast pace this year with 6 new countries so far (8 in 2022).

Hopefully, more banks locally would consider launching AP support by the end of 2023.

Apple Pay just launched in Vietnam with at least 3 banks at launch!

I believe this is the 3rd country in ASEAN who has Apple Pay available.

Yeah, was surprised that even smaller banks in Vietnam are part of the initial launch. In contrast, only the major local banks and foreign banks supports AP in Malaysia.

Would be interesting if smaller players such as Affin Bank, BSN, Bank Islam and etc. starts offering Apple Pay to their cardholders.

Also, ALL the 6 said banks in Vietnam offers support for Debit Card as well. Same can't be said in Malaysia.

SoyaCincau's video on using Apple Pay at London Underground:

Hopefully we could pay for LRT/MRT/Other Public Transport at the turnstiles using Apple Pay soon, considering that the government has a relatively successful launch in allowing Open Loop Payments at several highways.
