Hi, I would like to confirm I want to go to Osaka station from Kyoto station and I have JR Pass for it.

From hyperdia, I found there are 2 type of train go Osaka station from Kyoto station without transit

1. LTD. EXP THUNDERBIRD 32
2. JR Special Rapid Service for BANSHUAKO

Does that mean my JR Pass only eligible (free) for the 'JR Special Rapid Service for BANSHUAKO '
If I take "LTD. EXP THUNDERBIRD 32", I have to pay for the fees?

JR pass cover it. Just sit at non-reserved seat n u will be fine. I once rush toward the train entered reserved seat n sat there w/o knowing it. The conductor is nice enough to tell me to go car no. of non-reserved  car.

Edit: super express thunderbird is the one I sat

Thanks for the confirmation notworthy.gif

I have another question.

I plan to get JR pass and SUICA card for my trip to Jap this coming Nov.

From what I read, SUICA card can also be used to take metro, rail train at Kyoto, Tokyo, Osaka? So I dont have to buy ticket at the vending machine right?

Some restaurant accept suica as well but beware that very limited vending machine accept suica in kansai are limited to pitapa card. Otherwise tokyo area is great place for suica. Certain temple accept em too.

Thanks for all the info! rclxms.gif
If you did not mention, I wouldnt know suica have limited use in kansai. I guess I will just use cash while I am at Kansai area.

Since two years back (or last year, cant remember), they have harmonized all the cards in Japan, and you can use your Suica in most of the railways, even in Kansai. I cannot speak for all lines in Kansai but I have been there a few time this year for business and no issue with my Suica.

It should be icoca card. Pitapa is a postpaid card which is unlikely available for foreign tourist, you will pretty much have no hassle in going through the trains and subway since most ic cards are compatible with each other. There might be some inconvenience in shopping using the cards though like it has mentioned above

When JR card cant be used, i will use suica card for ALL metro, railway in tokyo, kyoto, osaka.
Shopping just cash will do smile.gif
Thanks:)

Used it in my last trip. Coverage is good, except Arashiyama suffer a bit signal degradation, but considerable since its mountainous area. Other than that, unlimited full speed, which i can do anything. Done a speed test which the speed is always between 5 mbps to 30 mbps depends on the location.

I was considering that, but need to pay the RM200 deposit and have to courier back + all the cost etc (I from Johor). I feel stress need to take care of this (my psychological la)

I decided to get Yokoso Sim from lazada. Just use my phone to tether. Anyone has experience before?

You can directly return the device and claim back the deposit at the counter of KLIA2, unless you are doing flight transfering directly to Johor once you reach KLIA2.

A dilemma. I'll be in Japan for one week, and another week in HK, then only I'll head home. In HK, I can buy and use a prepaid SIM worth less than $40 for 1GB lasting for a month; definite choice. In Japan, if I'm to get the WiFi rental from Malaysia, I'll ahve to pay for the 2 weeks duration even though I'm only using it in Japan for a week because I'm only returning the device 2 weeks later. If I'm getting the WiFi rental from Japan, instead, I'll be paying twice the amount of money offered locally in KL. Any suggestions how I may turn around with this?

but my wife want to go kyoto badly  blush.gif .  thinking to do 4 days tokyo and 3 days kyoto. but my concern is the travelling from tokyo to kyoto vice versa.

Better listen to RC comment. I am currently at kyoto, going to tokyo later through shinkansen. I spents 2 full days at kyoto, 1 day travel to osaka n back to kyoto, 1 day travel to nara and back to kyoto. Not enough at all.

Somemore jr pass expensive. 1 JR pass top up a bit can get ticket to japan liao. Not to mention, we travel from tokyo airport to kyoto, just push luggage already damn tired. Later need to carry to tokyo again, haha, a bit sien.

I used that during my trip there.
It is really good, as long as you dont stream youtube.
I use iphone and share it to my ipad, wife phone + ipad, no problem at all.
But I think there is a daily limit (500mb) because during the last day, I just used up 1.3gb, so I thought just spam with update and youtube, but at the end being throttled.

QUOTE(daijoubu @ Nov 28 2016, 05:29 PM)
Did loads of research on the cheapest way to get internet in Japan. Previously I rent portable routers but then I stumbled upon this:

http://www.lazada.com.my/ntt-docomo-prepai...ck-2980937.html

Will be using it with a handphone that I'll be bringing along.

Pros:
- Super cheap, RM92 only after 15% discount. That equates to RM6.13/day if you use for 15 days
- 3.5GB with max 500mb/day, sufficient if you don't plan to stream a lot of videos. Usually back in Malaysia my normal usage is 1GB/week if I stream a lot of video
- No extra surcharge for router insurance, no risk of loss/damage of router
- No need to deal with picking up and posting back the router

Cons?
- You'll need a compatible smartphone
- If you use tethering on your smartphone to be shared with your party, your phone will lose battery faster tongue.gif
