Panasonic GX7 + 20mm F1.7 or Nikon D3400 with Sigma 18-35mm F1.8....

Hahaha damn it i'm now considering.. Just ditched my Sony and would like to try something else.
*
The nikon and sigma combo would cost quite a bit more than gx7+20mm 1.7? the ergonomics will not be good also due to the heavy lens and light body (small and lack of grip too).

i thought gx7 do have ibis
yah ur right.. its 2.5x the weight of the body.. perhaps should just move back to mirrorless.. im so tempted to have a prime at 27 to 52mm..

or maybe consider older DSLR? like 60d/ d7000, they will be cheaper than a new d3400 too.

Not at RM 2k. EM5 has an offer at RM2669 with a whole bunch of goodies thrown into it. I got the previous offer at RM 2.4k, without the goodies. Still in transit. My EM10 Mk 2 just arrived though.

You saw EM10 Mk2 with 3 lenses at RM2099? I thougbt is was 2299?

This is the one I got earlier. But only 2 lenses lar. Good deal.

super tempting omg, too bad i still had my canon FF with me.

EDIT: used to have em10 mark 1, loved the controls and everything but the evf was kinda awful and IQ wise it suffers after ISO400. also i just realized i mistaken the offer as 3 lenses, actually only 1 kit lens and one 45mm f1.8 doh.gif

problem with FF bro is everything else is not good enough especially if you pixel peep/crop. sweat.gif
i know bcs my FF buddies are constantly rubbing their pic IQ in my face.
lucky got other buddies using fuji XT series keeping them quiet for now.  brows.gif

m43 we relaks je....but get to laugh at them when their shoulder get tired.  laugh.gif

only reason i stick with canon FF is that

damn the bodies and lenses are so cheap yet the IQ so good (even though everything else is really outdated) laugh.gif

but yeah once you shot FF, you will find smaller sensor lacking in IQ esp lowlight/dynamic range.

I am having A7II and 2 Sony Prime lenses only. Their lenses too expensive, can’t really afford. Then I bought few Canon FD lenses with adaptor. IQ and shallow DOF is very good but still heavy and expensive lenses.

So at the end, I only use M43 while having A7II in dry box all the time.
*
yeap, exactly why i stayed away from sony/ fuji (or even pana/ oly) no matter how good the body/ sensor are.

their lenses cost even more than full frame canon/nikon glass albeit having similar IQ only. doh.gif

Cam provide some comparisons in terms if price?

for example, i used to shoot with em10 mark 1 + 12-40mm f2.8 PRO a few years back. Spent around RM4k+ in total (bought used).

IQ wise it is quite sharp in daylight and the autofocus is quick, not to forget other modern features such as Wifi and touchscreen. However the IQ suffers greatly for any indoor photoshoot, once you go past iso800 it gets quite oil painting-ish.

I sold it and ended up with Canon 5d2 + Tamron 24-70mm. Used 5d2 is around rm2k now and the tamron should cost about the same. Similar with the em10 combo, they costed me rm4-4.5k in total.

IQ on the Full frame canon is way better thanks to the 2x bigger sensor even though 5d2 is way older than em10, I can comfortably shoot at iso1600 or even iso3200 and still get usable images that require minimal post processing.

canon's lenses are really affordable as well due to the abundance of them in the used market, especially the 17-40mm F4L/ 24-105mm F4L/ 70-200mm F4L that cost around rm1.5k+ each for used units. then you also have prime lenses like the 50mm F1.8/ 85mm F1.8/ 100mm macro that costs less than rm1k.

the reason im emphasizing on used bodies/lenses is that i can't justify myself purchasing any new gears when the used ones are so affordable. laugh.gif

also one of the reason you did not change is mainly (like the rest of us) because FM said no.  laugh.gif

haha no la no FM yet, still young and single.

last time used to be very into photography so die die have to eat maggi to buy new gears, but nowadays going to graduate uni and work soon so i just treat my gears as tools for paid shoots thats it.

Speaking purely from a cost perspective, I don't think used m43 lenses are more expensive than what you mentioned. Prime lenses costs less than 1k as well, and 9-18mm costs around RM 1.2k, which is more affordable than Canon 17-40 though 8t may not be a fair comparison with Canon being weather sealed and all.

The prices lool about the same to me if you ask me, but with m43, you get superb image stabilization. For the same amount of money paid, I think having a smaller kit would make more sense no? Why lug around excess weight?

Agreed that at same ISO, noise will definitely be worse on m43. But consider this, so get lesser noise, the aperture needs to open larger for the same shutter speed (since you're shooting for indoor events, I believe the bottle neck should be shutter speed). Using a smaller f-stop means shallower DoF, which for me makes shooting a group of peoole more difficult as some of their faces may not be in focus. I just shot a corporate event today, and I actually find myself stopping down to f2.8 or f3.2 to shoot. Cap the ISO at 1600/800 and I find the results good.

Shooting indoors with flash negates most of the m43 problems if you ask me. In fact, deeper DoF is definitely preferred if you don't want your photos to turn into a bokeh fest.

Also, if you're doing paid shoots, why are you worried about costs? It is your tool to make money.

your points certainly make a lot of sense, i would say that each system has its own pros and cons, i just happen to like old school DSLR more especially the crazy battery life (my 5d's battery was made in 2010 and i can still get 1k+ raw photos out of one full charge).

I certainly missed the image stabilization on the em10 when I first got back into DSLR but I got used to it after a while as I mainly shoot fast paced events that require high shutter speed.

since both m4/3 and FF have their pro zoom lenses capped at f2.8, of course at the exact same settings (lets say Iso1600 F2.8 1/250) the FF will easily beat the m4/3. I still keep pictures from my em10 and the difference is too big to be compared.

as for why Im worried about the costs, Im just a very stingy person and I spend a lot on other expensive hobbies (biking/ cars). i work freelance as photographer as it pays quite well tongue.gif

DSLR battery life is undeniable.
go out the whole day shooting and night and still have 50% battery life left provided you shoot with the viewfinder that is.
no mirrorless can match that.
but for video there is no advantage in battery life there.

low light m43 is no match for FF that is a fact. but if you do not pixel peep/crop smaller sensors can give surprisingly good results in low light.
check out some of the high iso/high shutter speed that incubus_skj shared here in this thread.

one advantage of using old gears is you can build up your skills.
give a noob a7iii on auto setting and he can take clear, sharp pictures most of the time.
*
yeap.

the biggest problem is that when your lens isn't long enough (ex when shooting stage) and you need to crop, all the noise will be a lot more obvious.

that's when bigger sensor with higher MP can save the day.
