Hi guys,

Extremely interested in M43s and what it offers for the price range/budget/size. Just wanted to ask if this is reasonable as a compact street combo (and a 2nd camera also):

For <RM1k is it possible to get either these combinations:

EM10 + 17mm f1.8

or

EM10 + 45mm f1.8

or

EM10 + 25mm f1.8

or

EM10 + 14-42mm

Cheers guys

If you're doing street then get the 17mm combo

25mm focal length a bit too long, 45 hella long

14-42 can throw longkang
*
Hahaha

As per the longkang reference, price wise also reasonable? Cause just quickly browsing availability and initial quotes of sellers, quite a stretch to get the combo for <1k with the 17mm... unless I would consider the f2.8?

Surprisingly the original EM10 still going for quite a fair price considering the 3rd gen is out and the year it was released

14-42 just not worth it la, might as well take using phone

the 17mm f2.8 personally i haven't tried that one before so i don't know how good it is
*
Thanks. Appreciate the feedback man. Cause I have no experience whatsoever with m43's camera. Just that the size/weight/IQ ratio seems compelling. +if the price is right, was thinking no harm trying... jsut too bad no one I know has one for me to play around with... hahaha

Is it easy to find camera shop selling m43? Just wondering  hmm.gif
*
I've done almost 100% of my camera GAS via online. I've not really ventured around KK Town though

There are camera shops in my area, but not at the prices that are competitive enough vs Online... especially preloved ones

M43s? hahaha.. none at my area that I know of. Almost tempted to try analog... I see quite a few shops still processing film.. but I've never tried

Yea, my friend, but from sarawak said he still can molest Olympus there, but Panasonic cannot find at all  blink.gif

Yeah, maybe if I'm in KK then it would be better, however....

Just regular DSLR stuff also quite difficult to acquire... thus online. Luckily almost all my purchases have been satisfactory and no hiccups.

Wah... Oledi start to poison newcomers. biggrin.gif

Dark_Angel85 For me, the 14-42 was my starting out lens for 3 years before I started upgrading. It is an 'ok' lens that performed well in bright situations. Very versatile and compact, especially with the automatic cap. Definitely enjoyed it.

However, that being said, once I started buying lenses like 17mm f1.8, 25mm f1.7 or even 9-18mm f4, the kit lens has been sitting in my dry box since.
*
Interesting. I personally won't Diss kit lenses cause its all about price/bargain and all that

So.... What's your price? Hehehe

Coming from using kitlens in my Nikon time, I direct jump to PRO lens 12-40mm after switching to m43.
*
Hey man, thanks for sharing.

Was thinking a prime will fit my needs better simply due to compactness/personal taste. However, I'm still open for suggestions.

+most f2.8 zooms regardless of brand or system tend to be more on the heavy side. I want something more 'pocketable'

Poking around ebay doesn't really help also... The currency exchange is seriously killing us Malaysians

either 1 body + 12-40 pro lens

or 2 bodies + 2 primes

I think I'd prefer carrying just 1 cam + 1 prime walking around, but I guess that's preference. Also, kinda hard toting camera equipment+baby bags around most of the time but that's just me.

compared to the bigger fast zoom siblings of other systems, I have to agree.

Last time I have 17mm f1.8, it's perfect for street. Depends on whether you're 35mm ( 17mm m43 ) or 50mm ( 25mm m43 ) guy
*
Yes, of course coming from another format, I also have my preferred focal length and I do like 35mm ish for general street/environmental portraits

My 14-42 pancake EZ looks like got issue, it just does this dance when you turn on and shows "check status of lens". Need to turn on and off twice for it to fully retract. Consider RIP?

On the plus side, decided to finally get the 25mm prime to try and revive the camera that's severely underutilized.

Also, does anyone know where to get those usb rubber flap for my EM10 mk1? It broke off and wife accidently threw it away.
*
This has to do with the focus ribbon inside the lens either being loose or just outright spoiled. If you already do intend to RIP it, can try to DIY it yourself.. if you're still looking for a pancake zoom, the panasonic is a little bit better of a lens but somehow way more expensive.

Think I'm just gonna stick with the 25mm for now, something different and challenge myself sikit.

Honestly dont think wanna invest in another lens, the body also 6yrs old dy and don't plan to get a new camera since it's just for hobby. Plus Covid, not to say can go anywhere  biggrin.gif
*
the 25mm f1.8 is a gem of a lens. Not the most versatile walkaround lens but the IQ and FOV is really wonderful.

Unfortunately the pancake zooms aren't cheaper... would much prefer if they hovered around the RM400-RM500 range. I love pocketing my camera in my pants with the pancakes. They're relatively dark and their IQ is nothing to write home about... just have to say that I love the 12-32mm panny though. Struggles obviously indoors/low light but I do appreciate the mechanical zoom and just got to work around that smaller aperture.

I highly recommend you try to fix the ribbon issue yourself IF you are indeed gonna bury your lens. I think the ribbons are quite available online for chips if it needs replacing, if you fail to fix it, well you were going to bury it anyway.... devil.gif

If size seems to be of primary importance and price a close second...

... then the Panasonic 12-32mm pancake is a stellar lens. only at the longest end you're sacrificing 1 stop of light. (this is if you're comparing it to the 12-45mm pro). I can't say the IQ will be similar though obviously... especially at the 32mm end which I would have to say isn't particularly nice... if IQ is your primary concern, then don't go for the 12-32mm.

The portability of the 12-32mm though is incomparable. I plop it into my shirt pocket and I don't even have to bother with a bag. I use it only if I need to go wider than my 25mm f1.8 which is sufficient for my needs in every 9/10 shots.

It's not cheap for a kit lens, but not pro lens territory at least. hehe

and the new oly 12-40mm is hovering rm3k plus minus all the time.
yes…but the 1 stop different really makes the huge difference…sweat.gif
*
yup. I can imagine when that one stop is very important... For the pancake, you gotta work around that aperture/low light. + the IQ of the 12-32mm on the 32mm end isn't its strong suit. At the 12mm-24mm end, it's decent.... the IQ, and aperture is a clear win for any one of the pro lenses.

more of like price + pocket-ability.

Hey guys.

Oly 14-42mm pancake lens showing the "Please check status on lens". Keeps extending/retracting... could it be the flex ribbon problem? Occurred when I absent mindedly changed lens while the em10ii was still on (I unmounted another lens and mounted the 14-42mm ez lens) and it started doing that. I can mount other lenses on the camera and seems normal with other lenses.

Would love to hear what you guys know so I can troubleshoot as well. Cheers all

How bout Factory reset your em10ii?
I have been carelessly unmounted my panny 25mm F1.7 twice while camera is on, on my em5ii. Luckily no problem.
*
Thanks for the tip. I'll try doing that but the camera is fine though. When I mount my 25mm f1.8 on it, works perfectly fine

sad to say but oly 14-42 kit lenses are not famous for reliability.
the 14-42ez has issues with the zoom motor, 14-42ii r has issues with the flex cable.

for kit lenses i prefer to get the pana ones for reliabiliry although optically oly are more superior in my opinion.
*
Hey man... True. The panny was indeed less problematic... However, kept going back to the oly for various reasons..... thankfully Digital Fix Care managed to get it repaired... Not cheap but definitely lesser than what OM was quoting... Hopefully it won't act up again

Had the same 'pls refer to status of the lens' problem with my 14-42ez after 1.5 years light use, just a month or two after warranty period. Considering repair or getting a different brand, though I like it for its compactness. Mind telling what's the cost of your repair and what part(s) was replaced?
*
According to DFC, it's the aperture flex cable that needed replacing. Cost me a whopping RM150.... but like I said, way lower than what OMD quoted, and a brand new one will cost me even more. Somehow, this kit lens is quite expensive if you buy it new.

Thanks. If I could use the lens for another 1.5-2 years after repair for rm150 seems reasonable. Better than getting a used one. A brand new is out of the question. Any warranty from the part replaced? And if so, how long? Where's the location of the repairer and his contact no?
*
Yes. my thoughts exactly. I just love the combo of IQ, AF and compactness for just everyday shooting. even used prices for this lens seem a bit cry.gif I do have bad luck with this lens.... though I try my best to be gentle with gear that I think need more TLC.

I don't think you'll get any warranty for repairs like these. He took around a few days to repair it, of course it takes longer for me to post/receive. I don't think even OMD has warranty for this particular repair (not sure about this one, maybe others have more experience).

Google for Digital Fix Care, the shop is situated in N9. If you want more info, maybe can PM.. i don't think it's good to post people's details in public forum.

^even I was introduced by a carouseller. Shout out to you bro Taq!

Just my luck....

2nd Oly 14-42mm ez pancake giving me the extend/retract issue. If not for this, the lens has always been an excellent performer as far as IQ and focal range is concerned.

aihhhhh..... you guys know any good sifus that can fix it or 'convert' these pancakes to be less problematic?
