U.S. Navy's Zumwalt destroyer sidelined after engineering casualty

user posted image

NORFOLK, Va., Sept. 22 (UPI) -- The U.S. Navy's Zumwalt guided-missile destroyer has sustained an engineering casualty, less than a month before it is slated to be commissioned into service.

The casualty occurred on Monday during preparation to get underway at Naval Station Norfolk, the sea service told the U.S. Naval Institute.

The future DDG 1000 will stay in Norfolk to conduct an assessment of the casualty and to complete repairs.

Crews discovered the casualty after detecting a seawater leak in the propulsion motor drive lube oil auxiliary system for one of the ship's shafts, USNI reported.

While built-in redundancies in the ship's propulsion plant allows the first-in-class destroyer to operate with multiple engine configurations, it was determined that repairs should be done in port.

The Navy's newest and most technologically advanced surface ship was in the midst of a three-month journey to its San Diego home port.

The Zumwalt was scheduled to perform operational proficiency training, certifications and preparation ahead of its October commissioning.

Or against the Indons rolleyes.gif neither country has much more than a self defence capability lah, no matter what military hawks on either side believe whistling.gif

But its illuminating to see some of our people so inspired by terrorists who deliberately target civilians, and even more amusing to see they are the same ones bleating about civilian casualties inflicted by the other side whistling.gif

I hear we bought as much as 25,000 rockets back in the early 2000s. Mainly from Pakistan, but also from eastern europe.

Malaysian Army, it seems, are pretty big fans of the RPG-7. An 8-man section also have 2 RPG-7 already. laugh.gif

Pretty much the standard for infantry section I think. The SAF section is also arm with 2 MATADOR (disposable) which replaces the ARMBRUST a decade back.

Localizing firepower can make for more independent small units, though. Can have more initiative and don't necessarily have to wait for support (if any comes, that is) to chase objectives.

if its ady in their combat load why not? beside most of the time msian army marched carrying their whole camping grounds anyway with loads up to 50kg and plus 10-20kg more if you are the radioman

also since when a soldiers comfort is even remotely considered to the command? if they told you to march 100km, you march 100km no question asked  puke.gif
*
Bang I'm sure Msian soldiers can even carry their whole armory with them for a 100 km march if instructed laugh.gif but we are talking here about the practicality of excessive weight in real combat environment. How many rounds of munitions can a section of foot soldiers carry besides their standard gear without affecting their fighting ability.

Usual for dedicated crew-served weapon. The RPG gunner is specially trained for the weapon and doesn't have the duties of a rifleman. The RPG is used as a mainline weapon in itself, unlike disposable rockets that usually kept as backup and will only be used against vehicles or a particularly tough defensive positions.

Also if the orthodox RPG doctrines are being practiced here, usually the gunner will carry a loaded RPG and 3 spare grenades while his loader will carry another 3. And all of this is just on a squad of 8-10 infantrymen. A platoon of just 100 soldiers can potentially have up to 10-15 RPGs available in combat.
