Did the Russians Develop a Better LCS?

user posted image

QUOTE
Russia’s Derzky-class combatants are on the way – and the Russians may have gotten the concept right.
QUOTE
Officially known as Projekt 20386, the 3,400-ton Derzky has a single 100mm gun, two eight-cell launchers for the Redoubt system, two four-cell launchers for the Kalibr anti-ship missiles, two quad torpedo tube mounts, and two AK-630 close-in weapon systems. It also has the ability to carry a helicopter, a multi-mission bay, and a top speed of 30 knots.
QUOTE
The Russian vessel is packing a lot more firepower into a hull that is a little smaller than the LCS. The Derzky gives up anywhere from 14 to 17 knots of speed when compared to the LCS, but the LCS cannot outrun the Kalibr anti-ship missile. The LCS has more helicopter capacity, but the MH-60s are only equipped with the AGM-114 Hellfire anti-ship missile (older SH-60Bs had the AGM-119 Penguin). Some off-the-shelf systems could make the LCS a much closer match for the Derzky.
QUOTE
The good news is that the Russians will not get the Derzky until 2021, and they are only planning to buy 10 of these vessels.
QUOTE
The bad news for the United States is that Russia may have built the better LCS.

New sniper system for Russian special services ready for serial supplies

user posted image

KLIMOVSK, November 5. /TASS/. The new sniper system for Russia’s special services has passed state trials and is ready for serial supplies, CEO of the Central Research Institute of Precision Machine-Building (TsNIITochMash) Dmitry Semizorov said on Saturday.

"The rifles have successfully passed state tests," Semizorov said, presenting the new rifle to Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin. "The work of an interdepartmental commission has been completed," he added.

The first supplies of the sniper system will be carried out for the Federal Protective Service (FSO), a federal government agency tasked with protecting high-ranking state officials. "We have the first order, the first batch is small, it will be used by the FSO forces and we are already working on serial supplies," Semizorov said.

The sniper system, developed for the first time in modern Russia’s history, is equipped with optical sight and a 2km laser ranging device. It is fully based on domestic materials, except for the electronic component base in thermal pointers, he said.

Vladimir Putin Wins the Election No Matter Who The Next President Is

user posted image

QUOTE
On Tuesday, Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump will be elected president. But no matter who prevails, Russian President Vladimir Putin can declare a victory of his own in the 2016 presidential race.
QUOTE
Russia’s hacking and leaking of private emails and documents from U.S. political organizations marked an unprecedented campaign to interfere with American elections.
QUOTE
while it’s not clear that Putin was specifically trying to get Trump elected, half a dozen U.S. intelligence officials and Russia experts told The Daily Beast that the hacking campaign succeeded in embarrassing American politicians, fomenting an already polarized electorate, and turning Putin himself into a major character
QUOTE
intelligence community views the Russian campaign “with great alarm.” In part that’s because interference with the presidential election is not a singular event. Rather, it fits in a pattern of increasingly bold moves by Russia to challenge U.S. influence and to enhance Putin’s standing with his own people.
QUOTE
Last summer, a senior E.U. official said that Russian propaganda websites and social media trolling had been documented in every European country. Hundreds of “disinformation websites” had been spotted in Poland, Czechia, Slovakia, and Hungary. The EU now has a task force dedicated to debunking conspiracy theories and fake news stories being churned out by Moscow.
QUOTE
To strengthen the legitimacy of his own rule, Putin routinely seeks to expose corruption and unfairness in U.S. and European politics and to accuse his adversaries of behaving no differently than him. The leaked emails from the DNC and later inside Clinton’s own campaign gave him powerful ammunition—showing that the DNC and its leadership were working hard to undermine Clinton’s Democratic rivals
QUOTE
“It’s classic Putin, jerk geopolitics, trying to win the initiative by some alpha-male stunt, the cyber equivalent of bringing his big dog into meetings with Angela Merkel, who is notoriously afraid of dogs.”
QUOTE
former CIA Director Michael Hayden said that Trump was playing the old Soviet role of the “useful fool, some naif, manipulated by Moscow, secretly held in contempt, but whose blind support is happily accepted and exploited.”
QUOTE
The omnipresence of Putin in the campaign has also demonstrated, both to a Russian and American audience, that Russia cannot be dismissed after the votes for president are counted.
QUOTE
Presuming Clinton is the victor, it will fall to her to help craft and ultimately enforce a strategy to deter Russian aggression in the future.

Iraqi units clear Mosul buildings after advances, IS attacks

user posted image

user posted image

QUOTE
The special forces launched a two-pronged assault deeper into Mosul's urban center on Friday, unleashing the most intense street battles against IS militants since the offensive to retake the city began nearly three weeks ago. At least seven special forces troops have been killed in the fighting.

More than 3,000 Iraqi troops took part in the assault under heavy U.S.-led coalition air support, but the pace of the fight also slowed as Iraqi forces moved from fighting in more rural areas with few civilians to the tight, narrow streets of Mosul proper. At least seven suicide attackers in explosives-laden vehicles attacked troops on Friday, five of whom were killed before nearing their targets.

The operation to retake Mosul is expected to take weeks if not months. Moving from neighborhood to neighborhood in house-to-house battles through warrens of booby-trapped buildings is time consuming and Iraq's military has repeatedly opted for slower operations in an effort to minimize casualties.
QUOTE
On Saturday, recent satellite images emerged showing that the extremists have set up formidable defenses designed to bog down advancing forces, including rows of concrete barricades, earthen berms and rubble blocking key routes leading to the core of the city.

The images taken Monday and made public by Stratfor, a private intelligence firm based in Austin, Texas, also showed that IS fighters have cleared terrain and leveled buildings around Mosul airport and a nearby former military base on the west bank of the Tigris. The defenses "will pose a substantial tactical challenge" to advancing Iraqi troops as they make their way toward central Mosul, the firm said.

Inefficiency of US Tanks Used in Mosul Leaves German Magazine Uneasy

user posted image

QUOTE
German Journalist Gernot Kramper compared two videos showing the US-made M1 Abrams tank and the Russian-made T-90 being hit by anti-tank missiles. He found that the Russian-made military vehicles demonstrated much better resistance and a higher level of armor protection than the American one.

QUOTE
Apparently, a rocket hit the most vulnerable part of the tank — the compartment with ammunition. However, the 60-ton tank was still supposed to provide protection for the crew. Obviously, the tank in question did not possess active defense systems. There was also no reactive armor on the vehicle that could have reduced the damage
QUOTE
To prove his opinion, Kramper published a video depicting the US-produced TOW missile hitting the Russian-made T-90 tank in Syria. The machine turned out to have an active protection system that didn't let the missile to penetrate the armor and enabled the crew to get out of the cab.

Satellite Imagery Shows ISIS Defenses in Mosul

The Stratfor analytic agency has published satellite imagery, showing a strong defensive line, built by Islamic State (IS) terrorists along the southern edge of the Mosul’s center.

QUOTE
The Iraqi Army and its allies, approaching Mosul from the east, have already entered the city’s outskirts. However, the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group, stationed in the heart of the Iraqi city, has started to prepare for the forthcoming battle. The Stratfor analytic agency published satellite imagery, obtained by AllSource Analysis, which show that terrorists have built a strong defensive line along the southern edge of the Mosul’s center.

QUOTE
The photos, represented by the above, were taken on October 31. As Stratfor’s experts noted, terrorists have cleared “a wide swath of terrain to the north of Mosul airport, along the western bank of the Tigris River.” Practically all the buildings of the airport complex, as well as of the former military base to the west from it have been destroyed by terrorists in order to transform the edge of the city’s fortified city center “into a wall, from which they can target approaching adversaries.” The large open areas, which have been cleared by the IS to the south of its positions “will enable it to watch and engage advancing forces from a greater distance.”

At the same time, a long line of barricades has also been built by terrorists on roads leading into the city. According to Stratfor, the IS has used portions of concrete walls in the streets in order to prevent vehicles from using them. Terrorists have also “fashioned ready-made barriers that are currently lining both sides of the roads that are still open, and they could easily tip them into the streets once the battle draws near.”

Experts noted that defensive measures of the IS terrorists would pose a substantial tactical challenge to the air power and artillery fire of the Iraqi forces and its allies during the offensive on the city. “Iraqi troops will either have to adjust their course to avoid running into the Islamic State’s positions head-on, or accept the risks of crossing open terrain to reach the dug-in jihadist fighters,” Stratfor’s analysts concluded.

Indonesia to boost military in South China Sea amid dispute

Anticipating threats in disputes in the South China Sea, Indonesia said it would be boosting its military presence in the Natuna Islands. Jakarta said it might deploy Russian-made SU-35 jet fighters (inset) which it would buy from Moscow.

QUOTE
JAKARTA, Indonesia — Indonesia will strengthen its weaponry systems on Natuna Island in anticipation of future threats in the South China Sea dispute.

Natuna, located 550 kilometers east of Batam Island, borders Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia and Malaysia. The island is on the border of Indonesia that is nearest to the South China Sea.

“We will equip Natuna with a port and extend its military air base runway. The runway should be enough to accommodate four jet fighters,” Defense Minister Ryamizard Ryacudu told journalists.

He added that more jet fighters would be stationed at the military air base Ranai in Natuna.

The defense minister has made a list of weapons systems needed for borders, saying having proper weapons systems along the borders was necessary to prevent possible threats to Indonesia’s territory.

Iraq’s Vital Weapon Against ISIS in Mosul

$250,000 Kornet missiles target toughest Islamic State truck bombs

user posted image

QUOTE
In the battle to retake Mosul, Iraqi officials attributed early successes against Islamic State to the Kornet, a laser-guided antitank missile system that can be launched from 3 miles away.
QUOTE
The successful use of the Kornet missiles—price tag $250,000 apiece—helped clear the way for the Iraqi army’s advance on Mosul
QUOTE
The Kornets have been in the Iraqi military arsenal for more than a decade and were used against American troops during the 2003 invasion of Iraq, disabling Abrams tanks and other armored vehicles.
QUOTE
The Kornet scope has 10 times the resolution of the human eye and has also been used for surveillance. The operator can lock onto a target and fire one missile a minute.
QUOTE
The weapon is so prized that Kornet specialist Pvt. Nasr Taha is greeted with handshakes and smiles by ranking Iraqi commanders. Some slip him cash bonuses.
QUOTE
With missiles so costly, Kornet specialists are stingy with their launches. Pvt. Taha said he doesn’t keep a count of successful hits. He does, however, keep a tally how many armored car bombs he has taken out in his two years with the army: already 20, as his unit neared Mosul in late October.

What are the Philippines and Malaysia Doing When It Comes to China? (It's Called Bandwagoning)

user posted image

QUOTE
Any power that attempts to dominate a region is likely to appear threatening to neighboring states. Their natural response is to try to counter the strength of that emerging hegemon and, if possible, to band together with like-minded neighbors for such a strategy.
QUOTE
For small, relatively weak countries, the choice may be more complex and difficult. In some cases, there may be a greater incentive to appease the emerging hegemon, to bandwagon with it, rather than seek to balance it. The recent behavior of two countries in East Asia, the Philippines and Malaysia, is consistent with a bandwagoning strategy.
QUOTE
Duterte went on to indicate that he wished to work with both Russia and China, adding that that there would be no further military exercises with U.S. forces because such actions angered China.
QUOTE
Then in October, he was in Beijing concluding an agreement with China (in exchange for a $24 billion aid package), and stating that it was China, Russia, and the Philippines against the world.
QUOTE
During a six-day visit to Beijing in late October and early November, Razak signed 14 economic agreements worth $34.25 billion. In addition, his position on the territorial disputes in the South China Sea is that they should be addressed through “dialogue”—essentially echoing Beijing’s preferred approach.
QUOTE
Razak bluntly rebuked Western powers that had criticized his rapprochement with China—especially those countries, he charged, that had previously exploited populations in the region as colonial masters.
QUOTE
The recognition of China’s growing power and a belief among some smaller states that attempting to counter it is both more hazardous and costly than learning to live with it. Another consideration is possible resentment against the United States and its allies as the incumbent hegemonic network. That certainly seemed to be the import of Razak’s comments.
QUOTE
Small client states have reason to wonder whether the United States would risk war with China to defend them from attack, much less to risk an armed conflict to back their positions on some lesser matter such as territorial claims in the South China Sea. Indeed, they might wonder whether the United States would be willing to jeopardize its overall relationship with China—America’s largest trading partner and the holder of nearly $1.2 trillion in U.S. Treasury debt—to back some minor client.

Morale is high among anti-Islamic State fighters marching on Raqqa

His face bearded and head wrapped in a black scarf, Gharib spoke near Ain Issa, an operations centre for the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) Kurdish-Arab alliance.

He is just one of the 30,000 men and women, Arabs, Kurds and Turkmens, engaged in operation "Wrath of the Euphrates".

SDF forces are advancing against the de facto IS capital in Syria on three fronts, from Ain Issa and Tal Abyad to the north, and from the village of Makman to the east.

"The US forces are supporting us. Thank God, we have everything we need. We have weapons, PKC machine guns, artillery, everything is ready and our morale is high," Gharib added.

Putin's new 'super tank': British intelligence warns Russian vehicle is 'the most revolutionary change in tank design in the last half century' and leaves the West totally outgunned

user posted image

user posted image

QUOTE
British military intelligence officers have issued a warning over a new Russian 'super tank' which they claim is far superior to anything which is available to Nato.

The document claims that Britain's Challenger II main battle tank could be overpowered by the Kremlin's new Armata tank.
QUOTE
The current policy is to not consider a new main battle tank for at least 20 years as heavy armour is not suited to countering the threat posed by lightly-armed Jihadis.
QUOTE
Intelligence experts believe the new Russian tank has a lower profile than Western heavy armour, is faster and lighter.

The turret has the ability to self-load its ammunition, including high explosive and armour piercing rounds. It also has the ability to fire anti-tank missiles.
QUOTE
The document warns that Vladimir Putin presents a threat to countries surrounding his borders and this new tank will be crucial to his expansionist aims.

Gunmen kidnap two Indonesian fishermen off Sabah

user posted image

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia - Gunmen have abducted two Indonesian fishermen off Malaysia's eastern Sabah state, a security official said Wednesday, an area where militants from the Abu Sayyaf group have been blamed for a series of kidnappings.

"The incident happened on Saturday off Sandakan," Wan Abdul Bari Abdul Khalid, head of Malaysia's Eastern Sabah Security Command told AFP.

"A group of five armed men abducted two fishing boat captains in separate raids on the high seas," he said.

The gunmen also stole the crew's handphones and the GPS systems on the boats.

"We do not know who carried out the latest abductions nor do we know where they may have been taken to. But we know it is a form of business for the kidnappers," Abdul Bari added.

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte is expected to discuss possible joint security operations with Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak on Thursday, in a bid to stop the kidnappings along the two countries' sea border.

The Abu Sayyaf is a loose network of militants formed in the southern Philippines in the 1990s with seed money from Osama bin Laden's Al-Qaeda network. The group has earned millions of dollars from kidnappings-for-ransom.

Military sources say the Abu Sayyaf are currently holding a Dutch hostage, five Malaysians, two Indonesians and four Filipinos in their jungle stronghold.

The militants beheaded two Canadian hostages earlier this year, after failing to collect a ransom.

While the Abu Sayyaf's leaders have in recent years pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group, analysts say it is mainly focused on a lucrative kidnapping business rather than religious ideology.

The U.S. Army’s Solution to Urban Warfare Problems — Aim Bazookas at Them

QUOTE
The war in Afghanistan had a lot to do with the Carl Gustaf seeing a revival in U.S. service. Militants harassed American troops from long ranges and from behind cover, making it hard to shoot back. A missile from an orbiting aircraft or a shoulder-fired Javelin launcher would reach far enough, at a cost of around $80,000 per missile.
QUOTE
A single Carl Gustaf round costs — at most — around three percent as much, and carries an effective range of 1,000 meters if it’s a rocket-boosted round.
QUOTE
Fundamentally, the launcher’s design hasn’t changed. Saab, the weapon’s Swedish developer, is pitching the M3E1 as a collection of evolutionary improvements optimized for urban warfare. It’s slightly smaller and weighs around 15 pounds, seven pounds lighter than the current M3.
QUOTE
The M3E1 also features an interface for “intelligent” sights, allowing soldiers to program air-bursting rounds to explode above a precise point.
QUOTE
Remember that the Carl Gustaf’s selling point is that it’s cheap, simple and brutal on the battlefield. Eventually, it will wear out. So Saab added a device which records how many times the launcher has been fired.
QUOTE
The problem with the current M3 is that U.S. Army requires its soldiers to mark in a notebook how many times they fire. This number must be exact. If there’s confusion over a specific M3’s firing history, the Army cuts that weapon’s service life in half.

Philippine mayor linked to drugs shot dead in jail by police: reports

user posted image

QUOTE
It's the second killing of a Philippine politician linked to illegal drugs in a week.

Rolando Espinosa Sr., the Albuera Township mayor who was accused by President Rodrigo Duterte as part of his crackdown on illegal drugs, was killed by police early Saturday in what they're describing as a shootout in the Baybay jail, according to reports from the Associated Press and the BBC.

Police raided the jail in search of firearms and illicit drugs when they say Espinosa fired shots, reports said. They fatally shot him and his fellow inmate in the jail cell.

Martin Andanar, press communication office secretary, told the Philippine Star, called Espinosa's death a huge loss to the government.

"I’m puzzled and at the same time, I am also sad that this happened because Mayor Espinosa is a big help to (the) investigation of our government to pin down those involved in illegal drugs," he said.

US Navy to cancel newest warship ammunition costing $800,000 per round - report

user posted image

QUOTE
The US Navy’s newest warship is designed to carry two huge guns that can hit targets 80 miles away – but although that may sound impressive, the Navy has now decided that the necessary ammunition is too expensive.
The Long Range Land-Attack Projectile (LRLAP) is a guided munition capable of hitting targets in “urban canyons of coastal cities with minimal collateral damage,” manufacturer Lockheed Martin said.

It is the only round designed for the Advanced Gun System (AGS) of the DDG 1000 Zumwalt-class land-attack destroyer.

But although the LRLAP may look good on paper, the Navy moved to cancel the projectiles, citing excessive costs of $800,000 or more per round.

“We were going to buy thousands of these rounds,” a Navy official familiar with the program told Defense News. “But quantities of ships killed the affordable round.”

The official went on to state that the problem lies solely within the price of the projectile, rather than with its performance.

Rodrigo Duterte cancels purchase of 26,000 U.S.-made M16s

QUOTE
MANILA, Nov. 7 (UPI) -- Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte said he has canceled the purchase of 26,000 assault rifles from the United States after the sale was halted by the U.S. State Department.

The weapons were to be used by the Philippines National Police. The State Department last week halted the sale of the weapons after Maryland Sen. Ben Cardin, the top Democrat on the Foreign Relations Committee, said he would block the sale.

On Monday, Duterte said he ordered the Philippines National Police to cancel the purchase.

"I would like to announce now, that the ... 26,000 M16s that was maybe ordered, or were ordered already, I am ordering its cancellation," Duterte said. "We will just have to look for another source that is cheaper and maybe as durable and as good."

Previously, Duterte suggested he would purchase weapons from Russia if the United States blocked the sale.
