US Navy to cancel newest warship ammunition costing $800,000 per round - report

user posted image

QUOTE
The US Navy’s newest warship is designed to carry two huge guns that can hit targets 80 miles away – but although that may sound impressive, the Navy has now decided that the necessary ammunition is too expensive.
The Long Range Land-Attack Projectile (LRLAP) is a guided munition capable of hitting targets in “urban canyons of coastal cities with minimal collateral damage,” manufacturer Lockheed Martin said.

It is the only round designed for the Advanced Gun System (AGS) of the DDG 1000 Zumwalt-class land-attack destroyer.

But although the LRLAP may look good on paper, the Navy moved to cancel the projectiles, citing excessive costs of $800,000 or more per round.

“We were going to buy thousands of these rounds,” a Navy official familiar with the program told Defense News. “But quantities of ships killed the affordable round.”

The official went on to state that the problem lies solely within the price of the projectile, rather than with its performance.

Rodrigo Duterte cancels purchase of 26,000 U.S.-made M16s

QUOTE
MANILA, Nov. 7 (UPI) -- Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte said he has canceled the purchase of 26,000 assault rifles from the United States after the sale was halted by the U.S. State Department.

The weapons were to be used by the Philippines National Police. The State Department last week halted the sale of the weapons after Maryland Sen. Ben Cardin, the top Democrat on the Foreign Relations Committee, said he would block the sale.

On Monday, Duterte said he ordered the Philippines National Police to cancel the purchase.

"I would like to announce now, that the ... 26,000 M16s that was maybe ordered, or were ordered already, I am ordering its cancellation," Duterte said. "We will just have to look for another source that is cheaper and maybe as durable and as good."

Previously, Duterte suggested he would purchase weapons from Russia if the United States blocked the sale.

Sayyaf kidnaps German yachter, kills companion in latest attack in Sabah

user posted image

QUOTE
The military’s Western Mindanao Command releases photos of the German yacht ‘Rock All’ recovered by security forces at sea off Pangutaran Island in southern Philippines. The boat was hijacked by the Abu Sayyaf on November 6, 2016 off Sabah in Malaysia and seized German yachter Juegen Kantner, 70, and killed his companion Sabina Wetch, 50, that officials claimed was probably raped. Read the link
IF confirmed Tacticos then absolutely no problem, because it will be more or less 100% western systems on china hull
The question of integration is IF china CMS is used

Sounds better and better. Now what I want to know is the containerised MCM and hydrographic survey equipment

Saudi Arabia losing ground to Iran

user posted image

QUOTE
Saudi setbacks are partly due to factors outside its control, but also due to inherent weaknesses in Saudi capacities.
QUOTE
most of the 1980s, Saudi Arabia and Iraq were close partners in containing the revolutionary wave from Iran. King Fahd provided Saddam with tens of billions of dollars in aid during the Iran-Iraq War; without Saudi financial help, Iraq would have collapsed. Fahd also rallied the other Gulf states to help Saddam and promoted Saddam as a power to work with in Washington.
QUOTE
In 2003, King Abdullah thought the American decision to oust Saddam without having another Sunni strongman to succeed him was rash and dangerous. The Saudis were certain Iran would fill the vacuum. Riyadh was especially suspicious of the role Ahmad Chalabi played in the planning process of President George W. Bush's administration for postwar Iraq. The Saudis believed Chalabi was an Iranian agent.
QUOTE
The Saudis support the war against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria but they worry its defeat will only be the next stage for further Shiite and Iranian domination of the Iraqi polity.
QUOTE
In 1990, Damascus sent troops to defend the kingdom against Saddam and together the two settled the Lebanese civil war (at the expense of Gen. Michel Aoun). In 2000, the Saudi ambassador to Washington, Prince Bandar, helped Assad consolidate power when his father died. Saudi support convinced the Alawite generals that Assad would be a strong ruler.
QUOTE
The assassination of Rafik Hariri ended Saudi support for Assad. When the 2011 revolution began in Syria, the Saudis quickly began to assist the Sunni forces.
QUOTE
As intelligence chief in 2011, Bandar oversaw the assistance and his priority was getting rid of Assad.
QUOTE
Now the Saudis have suffered another setback in Lebanon. Once the bete noire of the Assads, Aoun is now their man. Even more, Aoun is the champion of Hezbollah.
QUOTE
The advice and expertise Hezbollah provides the Houthi rebels in Yemen is another irritation for the kingdom.
QUOTE
Demography has worked against the Saudis in Iraq and Lebanon. The Sunni minorities are losing the demographic struggle to the Shiites.
QUOTE
There is no Saudi equivalent of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which can provide expertise and advisers to groups such as Hezbollah and the Houthis. There is no Saudi general like Qasem Soleimani, the head of the Quds Force in the IRGC with years of experience in covert operations. The Saudis have good intelligence services but they are not on-the-ground, battle-hardened practitioners like the IRGC.

French DCNS Company Interested in Constructing Three Submarines in Poland

user posted image

QUOTE
WARSAW (Sputnik) — According to the Rzeczpospolita newspaper, the DCNS company remains a favorite in a struggle for a tender for the submarines’ construction, which would cost 10 billion zlotys (over $2.5 billion), as it proposes to equip the submarines with anti-ship NCMs with a range of 1,000 kilometers (621 miles).

Two other competing companies are the German Thyssen Krupp Marine Systems corporation and Sweden's Saab.

"We are determined to order offensive weapons with real combat value, namely, guided missiles with a range of about 1,000 kilometers," Poland’s Deputy Defense Minister Bartosz Kownacki was quoted as saying by Rzeczpospolita.

Get Ready, Russia and China: The U.S. Air Force Wants 400 New ICBMs

user posted image

QUOTE
The new effort to build ICBMs, what the Air Force calls “Ground Based Strategic Deterrence,” aims to construct durable, high-tech nuclear-armed missiles able to serve until 2075.
QUOTE
The new weapons will be engineered with improved guidance technology, boosters, flight systems and command and control systems, compared to the existing Minuteman III missiles. The weapon will also have upgraded circuitry and be built with a mind to long-term maintenance and sustainability.
QUOTE
Citing a Congressional Research Service report, a story in National Defense Magazine says the GBSD the program is expected to cost $62 billion from 2015 through fiscal year 2044.  That breaks down to about $14 billion for upgrades to command-and-control systems and launch centers, and $48.5 billion for new missiles, the report says.

In keeping with the NEW START Treaty, the US plans to field 400 new missiles designed to replace the aging 1960s-era Minuteman IIIs.

The new ICBMs will be deployed roughly within the same geographical expanse in which the current weapons are stationed. In total, dispersed areas across three different sites span 33,600 miles, including missiles in Cheyenne, Wyoming, Minot, North Dakota and Great Falls, Montana.

“If you look at the ICBM field, it's 33,600 square miles. That's how big it is. We sometimes say it's the size of the state of Georgia. It was developed that way for a specific reason. You didn't want them too close together. You wanted it so if the adversary were to attack at one time, you'd still have ones that would survive,” Weinstein explained.

China's J-20 Fighter Jet Can't Beat the US F-22 Raptor

user posted image

QUOTE
The supersonic, twin-engine fighter and attack aircraft packs advanced radar and sensor capabilities, with a 360-degree helmet display system that allows the pilot to through the aircraft itself. It boasts the same kind of stealth technologies the US Air Force has been honing for decades. And it’s bigger than the F-22 Raptor it rivals, so it can carry more fuel and more weapons, extending its lethality deep into enemy territory.
QUOTE
The J-20 is no F-22, and nowhere does it fall shorter than with its most critical trait: dodging detection. “At best, it’s probably stealthy only from the front,” says aviation analyst Richard Aboulafia, of the Teal Group. “Whereas all-aspect stealth like that in the F-22 and F-35 minimizes the radar signature from all directions.”
QUOTE
True stealth relies on the shape of the aircraft, its exhaust, material composition, cockpit shielding, and even flight characteristics.
QUOTE
Take the J-20 front canards, the elevator-like surfaces ahead of the wing. They’re no good for stealth flight, and they’re likely there to counteract an inherent instability in the design. The J-20 lacks the maneuverability and electronics, communications, and sensing capabilities of its US counterparts. “In head-to-head combat, the J-20 would lose in seconds,”
QUOTE
The jet’s real threat is its ability to use what little stealth it does have to penetrate a conflict zone and attack aircraft supporting front-line combatants, like refueling tankers and AWACS surveillance airplanes, and other big targets.

US Troops & Kurdish Militias Advance on Raqqa (Photos, Map, Infographics)

QUOTE
The structure of the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces involved in the Raqqa campaign

Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) fighters embed with US troops have been continuing the operation against ISIS terrorist group north of Raqqa. They anti-ISIS forces  seized 3 villages without facing a significant resistance from ISIS.

The so-called Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), supported by the US-led coalition’s air power and special forces units, launched a military operation to liberate the ISIS-controlled city of Raqa on November 6. The first stage of the operation is aimed to isolate the ISIS-controlled city. The Kurdish YPG participates in the operation under the SDF brand. Turkey and Turkish-backed forces are not involved in the operation.

QUOTE
YPG fighters and US soldiers side by side in the Raqqa offensive

Even pro-US sources recognize that the Kurdish YPG is the main striking force of the SDF. However, they aruge that a 15,000-strong Liwa Thuwar Raqqa force consisting of mainly Arabs will joint the battle when “it’s needed”. Now, Liwa Thuwar Raqqa battlations are allegedly passing a training in the US military camps at the Syrian-Turkish border. These claims cannot be verified and look as a PR move to hide the leading role of Kurdish forces in the operation.

Indonesian air force uses Leonardo ISR sensor

user posted image

JAKARTA, Nov. 7 (UPI) -- A digital aircraft sensor for aircraft for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions has entered service with the Indonesian air force.

The SAGE electronic support measure by Leonardo-Finmeccanica is carried on a modified CN-235 maritime patrol aircraft.

Leonardo said the modification program led by PT Dirgantara Indonesia and U.S. company Integrated Surveillance and Defense.

The SAGE sensor system can identify the location of radio frequency emitters -- such as surface-to-air missile fire-control radars -- from a single aircraft, enhancing situational awareness.

The first CN-235 was modified in 2016, with SAGE being installed and integrated with the aircraft's tactical mission system. Airborne flight testing then took place during the summer.

Leonardo is working closely with ISD and PTDI to deliver this capability to the Indonesian air force and said it is looking forward to future business opportunities with the two companies.

SAGE is currently be used by South Korean maritime helicopters and is scheduled to enter service on Brazil next year.
