Touran gearbox and maintenance issue. Very expensive to maintain

Alza is good value for money and toyota engine powerful and smooth CVT.

Ertiga is pricey? Someone quoted price starts from RM76k ?

It depends on your affordability.
If budget is not a concern then Touran is a good buy. If you don't have spare cash to standby for repair, then Alza is more suitable.

Alza n Cross Tauran maintenance is big difference.. not similar at all..
If u compare new alza n second hand grand livina then that's better..

if u r looking for image and status, go for VS Cross Touran
however, your pocket,..prepare for extra money to repair all the problems on the transmission/service cost

if u r looking for affordability in terms of maintenance etc, go for alza.

p/s: as for me, i wont choose both of it tongue.gif

Touran is cheap - for now. You need to look not at the purchase price at 68k, but the original price of 170k. Can you afford to maintain a 170k car? Periodic maintenance is of no issue, generally it's quite cheap, but wear and tear / ad hoc repairs might be a lot more trouble than it's worth.

im jetta owner.
and im also alza advance owner.

cross touran engine same with jetta. 160ps twincharge.
But i dont know why cross touran hv many issue. 2 of my friends using 2011 cross touran, both of them has change engine. one of them change clutch 3 times mileage below 100k.. I dont know why.

My jetta, no problem with engine so far. mileage 65k. only change clutch once because already feel judder..

If u ask me, better buy new alza. Eventhough crosstouran handling, engine an 7 speed dual clutch is powerful, but since u buy used car without warranty is a mistake. If the engine breakdown, the cost to rebuild if through SC is 28k (if im not mistaken).

But if u have alza, u need to invest to make a proper sound insulation because i think alza insulation is bad. The engine is so n so cannot compare with VW la. but still can maintain 140-160kmh on highway.

Logic dictates that at Rm76k, the pricing is smack the same as Proton Exora where this model is going to be on sale side by side.

Pricing a b segment mpv the same as c segment mpv by the same company is really stupid.

More like the pricing will be at rm65k max smack at Alza price.

Want the best of both worlds?
Exora Bold Turbo standard edition if you want new.
Unless you want to hunt for 1-2 years old , Exora Bold Premium edition.

Sorry to be off topic.
I drove this car all the way to Singapore and back (and once, to Melaka and back) , and it does its job well. Great car to run outstation, but downside is heavy FC when driven 100% in city driving.

If u drive a maxime, means u don't mind to get the exora bold.

Exora is a nice car. However, it's an old model, they might change it soon.

I could not advice u, because we have different financial burden/capabilities.

However, fyi, im currently having subaru xv as my secondary, suzuki swift as my primary and proton inspira as my part time car (will let it go soon) lol.

I drove the Touran quite a bit.

Good: That engine. I have the updated version now, which should be more reliable, but anyway it is quite a gem. When driven gently frugal, when driven hard you can pick a fight with most cars in Malaysia (just make sure the engine is warm when you do, and give it a bit of gentle driving before turning off).

The handling... it corners as well as any car. As any car with good handling. Not those Japanese boats.

The bad:
Ride quality is beyond poor. It is actually painful. Maybe over time it has softened up, but I would highly recommend switching to smaller rims. With the 17" it is unbearably hard.

Third row space is atrocious. There is enough knee room, head room, it is wide... but the seat is right on the floor. If you are an amputee, good. If not, better start practicing yoga. You need to cross your legs, because there is maybe 10 cm between the floor and the seat.

The Alza is more comfortable. Knee room is very limited, but at least you can rest your feet on the ground. Both aren't good though.

The Touran is the better, safer, more grown up car, and most def more fun. However it has flaws, and yes, from what I heard the one I drove did develop gearbox or engine problems later. Plus the QC in Germany seems to be... surprisingly terrible.

It's a souped up sedan.
All wheel drive
High ground clearance,
Boxer engine..

Nice to drive, but if u r looking for space, go for exora or estima. Or even alza

Why not consider Hyundai Starex? a used 2010 unit around 80K. Very comfortable for family of 6. Just came back from Penang.

Not sure on the maintenance cos it is a friend's car. Abit bigger than normal 6 seaters.

For your budget.. i'd stay away from the vw touran. The alza may be boring but you get what you get. And for that kind of budget.. your hands are pretty tied to get an alza or an exora maybe. Don't know much about those china makes but i'd stay away
