Hehehehe. Here's a really cool casemod. The case is a smaller version of the V series hence the name MiniMe. Coz of the tiny dimensions we haf sum issues to deal with namely thermal issues. This mod is all about improving the thermals.

Here we go with the pix. A brand spanking new Lian Li V600B just waiting to bust out from the box. rclxm9.gif

Here's how the standard V600 looks like.

Now, this is the big problem with this case. Look at the PSU. It's mounted right in front of the CPU socket. The CPU heatsink is not gonna be happy sitting behind n not getting nice fresh air. The bling bling factor is also lost due to the PSU blocking everything. Also, u can't put a nice aftermarket HSF on it coz no space.

mmmm...nice case...cant u turn the psu other way round cause got the air vents on the panels or isit suppose to exhaust the air frm inside also

I've been considering this case and as you rightly point out, the limitation is the location of the PSU.

I thought of mounting the PSU upside-down at the area of the harddrive rack. Unfortunately that would mean it blows hot air to the front. Uncomfortable (and noisy).

I've seen one mod on hardforums where the PSU is mounted vertically blowing air to the base of the case (also at the harddrive cage area).

It would be interesting to see how you overcome this!

Turn the PSU around oso still blocking the CPU socket so cant use aftermarket HSF. What we're gonna go is move that PSU away from there.

PSU removed. C how nice n spacious it is now without the PSU there. So much better.

user posted image

Removed the ROM slot covers so I can adjust the PSU, USB wires, n also do the measuring for the top blowhole.

user posted image

This is where the PSU is gonna sit. thumbup.gif

More updates coming right up. Editing pix now.

Thing is with this config is the PSU fan blowing towards the user. This would result in both heat and noise.

I guess if the rig is placed at floor level it won't be a problem. On a desk however....

The ROM slots will b covered so the PSU exhaust won't b blowing out towards the user. It will exhaust onto the slot covers then it'll b exhausted upwards tru the 120mm exhaust above. That's y we need a blowhole up there.

originally, Lian Li designed the psu slot to let the psu intake the fresh air from the outside & exhaust it at the back, so the air vents are meant to suck the air in, the concept it's like other V series, a separate cooling for the psu slot, but all reviews i found for this case, they tend to place the psu to be an exhaust fan for the cpu cooler, i guess have to do some trial & error to know which position benefit the most

well u can consider Lian Li PC-A05 Link, with this kinda case, any high-end tower heatsink will fit in nod.gif

errr, i think u still can use aftermarket HSF, see my siggy there, use that cooler, it is perfect, the height of the cooler + the fan = still fits laugh.gif

nice idea u got there, hhmmm, maybe it's kinda hard to mod like Lian Li PC-A05,
the casing places the psu at the hdd bay hmm.gif isit possible sweat.gif

Here's the back of the case with the PSU still in it.

user posted image

After moving the PSU to the front, it leaves behind a big huge hole there.

user posted image

The case, side panel n rear PSU plate all marked n ready for cutting. I'll b cutting a window to replace those 2 smaller ventilation holes. Adding a blowhole to the top to ventilate teh hot air from the PSU. C that acrylic piece at the bottom? That's the plate for covering the PSU hole at the back.

Updatessssssssssssssssssssss. Here's the PSU plate cover marked out n ready for cutting.

user posted image

Rough cut is done. Tried the fan n PSU plug mod to c if everything fits b4 I do the finishing work on it to make the edges nice n smooth. The brown paper will b peeled off once everything is done to prevent scratches.

user posted image

Here's the original PSU plate next to my acrylic plate.

user posted image

Mounted it on the case to make sure everything fits properly.

user posted image

user posted image

View from the inside. The plug's mounting bolts haven't been cut. Just testing the fit now. I will cut the bolts to make it flush fit on the acrylic 2moro. The PSU wire will b soldered to the back of the plug.

user posted image

That's it for today. Phew, I didn't expect that darned plate to take so long. Was really difficult getting the plate to fit perfectly. The cutting of the window n top blowhole will commence 2moro.

looking at this casing .. i feel like changing to smaller sized casing from full sized ones .. hmm.

i realize small size setup seem to be the trend now if we do not require lots of harddrive space & above average performance.

Cant fit. Also, if u use the original PSU plate, it leaves a big hole below. I can drill the ori plate to fit the 8cm fan but that ugly hole will still be there below the fan.

Updates................................

MiniMe is complete. I haven't edited all the pix yet though. I'll just update with the pix I edited earlier today.

Time to chop the side panel. Chop chop chop.

user posted image

Voila! Side window rough cut is done.

user posted image

Now it's the top panel's turn for the choppity chop.

user posted image

Cutting the top blowhole halfway.

user posted image

That's all the pix I haf now. Will update again in about 30 minutes when I've edited all the pix.

Added on February 1, 2007, 12:27 amOK, here we gooooooooooooooooo. The pix r ready. This is the completion of Casemod: MiniMe. thumbup.gif

The detailed work on the blowhole n PSU acrylic plate r done. The window with the acrylic bonded to it. All cuts on the window n blowhole detailed to mirror shine edging.

user posted image

PSU installed into the front ROM bays.

user posted image

Everything is installed. The casemod is now complete.

user posted image

user posted image

Here's my favorite shot, I just cant get enuf of it. laugh.gif That acrylic PSU cover plate turned out really nice. The fan is installed as intake fan. It will suck cool air in from outside n blow over the CPU n mobo then it will get exhausted tru the top 120mm exhaust.

user posted image

user posted image

I really like the way this casemod turned out. It looks really nice now n the thermal issues r banished forever coz any CPU heatsink can be used without worry. Can even plunk in a Scythe Ninja if u want to. thumbup.gif

Actually no issues getting it to fit. It fits perfectly 1st time. That's y it's most important to get the measurements n drawing right b4 u start cutting.

I dunno y. But I reckon it looks better now without that side fan. IMHO, that side fan is really ugly.

edit: Oh noessssssssss! doh.gif doh.gif doh.gif doh.gif I forgot that the original plan was for a top window with 120mm blowhole. laugh.gif Oh well, back to work on Casemod MiniMe again 2moro. Wasted few hours cutting that lovely blowhole with mirror edging. sweat.gif

you're gonna leave it like that ? should invert the airflow direction and the power plug as well.....if make a 2x CDROM size acrylic box with the PSU parts inside can be seen from outside would be nicer....

erm.. shuold make a fan duct direct to the PSU if using sum nice PSU that have 12 ~ 14CM fan then put a at the front panel there to take out the hot air.. so the PSu got gud cooling...

The plug on the acrylic plate is a spare female plug I have. The PSU power cord, I cut n solder to teh female plug on the acrylic plate.

Nonid fancy looking PSU coz the window I cut to show only the mobo. N the airflow shud b fine coz it exhausts onto the ROM slot covers then it'll be sucked out by the 120mm fan above. The airflow pattern of the case now is reversed. The 8cm fan behind sucks air in. The PSU sucks air towards the front n then everything gets exhausted out the top. If the PSU turn around then it'll cause lotsa turbulence.

yup, dust is a big problem sad.gif

need to clean it regularly la cry.gif

even u put filter on the fan, it would only block the dust from coming into the case, but the dust will stuck there at the front panel, which is hard to clean it as it's not removable, just vacuum it la laugh.gif

Masked n marked, ready for cutting.

Top window rough cut is done.

Cutting the blowhole on the top window acrylic.

Detailing work on the window edge is done. All edges polished to a mirror shine.

Test fitting the 120mm fan on the blowhole. Acrylic is ready for mounting to the case.

I'm fitting the acrylic to the window now. Will update again once it's done.

Well, the top window is really nice on BTX style cases like the V Series coz the graphics card is facing up instead of down. Having a really nice card like the 8800GTX n a nice big window to show it off from the top is really nice. Did u think of that perspective? biggrin.gif

Anyway, here's the final updates.
rclxm9.gif rclxm9.gif MiniMe is now complete. I just completed teh top window which I forgot earlier. Here r the pix.

Haha, the rim effects reminds me of a few of those mood lamps in Ikea's lighting department. Good case choice && mod may I say.
