Apple Eyes Macbook's Underside (It was rumored that the reason the disc drive is beneath the Macbook is to open ways for more I/O ports for the new Macbook and also might be slimmer and smaller size) QUOTE To all of you who've been craving an ultraportable MacBook: Steve Jobs hears you.
Gizmodo and a few other sources are pointing to two Apple patent applications, published today, as evidence that a smaller MacBook (or MacBook Pro) will be forthcoming. The applications describe an optical disc drive that's accessible via the bottom of a laptop and a novel "access system" for removing discs from the upside-down drive. Why put the drive on the bottom of the laptop? To clear up room for more ports along the edges of an ever-thinner-and-smaller laptop, of course.
We're all for slimmer Apple laptops (our own MacBook seems a bit too heavy for its size), and we're sure that Apple would make the bottom-loading optical drive both elegant and easy to use. But we can't help asking ourselves: would we wait months, maybe a year, for the new, ultraportable MacBook with a built-in optical drive and LED-backlit display? Or would we just buy a Sony VAIO VGN-TXN15P today? (Quoted from Crave.Com) Here's from other sites too! I call this stupid.
Use bottom side to put optical drive? How can it be slimmer? Logic board plus optical drive will make it slimmer? I don't think so. And when you turn the MB upside down for about 10 to 20 times, the HDD filled with bad sectors because of course you would not shut down your MB when want to take out or put in optical disk, right and if you didn't tun it off, the HDD is still spinning when you turn it upside down right? Eh one more, one day you bought a collection of Prison Break CD and want to watch it using your MB, and every time you want to take out or put in optical drive, you need to angkat the MB from your notebook cooler and push button? Very2 tired la.
Very stupid idea, Apple won't do this.

As you know, Apple loves to push technology even further. Just look at their Mac products lineup, aren't that great? If Apple really wants to do this new Macbook with that disc drive turn upside down, Apple have to convince and have a wonderful way to present it during the Keynote. Maybe some good idea on how to put the disc into the tray and maybe the new technology on the Macbook can be turned upside down without to worry on the new technology of the HDD.
vandetta, you got a point there! hehe

i guess its some monkey business trick they trying to fool us,
remember the iphone ? last time always got sooooooooooooooo many rumours and prototype but almost NONE of them resemble the final product, see?
i think they purposely make us speculate and then to divert our focus to other place so we dont kacau them

Dude, Apple doesn't come with a way to make stupid things, they innovate current things to make it better Oh ya, one more, they just patent the idea, because that idea *maybe* can make money for them, it is not necessary to use the idea that you patented

even though their plan to place the optical drive at the bottom may be a bit radical, i think it's pretty feasible... the notebook is meant to be ultra-small, so i guess it won't be so cumbersome to flip it over.. carrying an external optical drive and sacrificing a usb port just for it is waay more irritating...
as for the hdd, for all you know they might end up using solid state flash based memory or sumthin.. small, lightweight, & no moving parts, so there's a lower risk of it getting spoilt..

i don't care much about the looks, i care about the spec and the price as well. Hopefully apple dropped "santa rosa" platform into this.
