QUOTE(silbii @ Feb 1 2007, 01:43 AM)
hear u man...but seriously, an svga dlp is not all that bad...i stress dlp...not lcd...i guess u probably had seen early model svga lcds from that Hitachi or whatever...the screen doo effect sucked.

That's why ppl always only talked about dlp in the early days when they talk about HT projector coz the lcd couldnt really bring good contrast or less pixel into the pics.

Reviews in projectorcentral and you'll see how dlp reigned those day. But then Pana and Sanyo upgraded their LCD technology, and voila - we got good looking videos from lcd now.

Heck, to this minute, i feel that my cheapo dlp dell has a better video quality than the Sanyo Z1 those days...and all for a fraction of a cost of the Z1.

Now we have Z3 already...i'm late! hehe

one of the good advice that ppl in avsforums thought me is that - if you wait for the next best projector - you'll never gonna buy any coz the technology changes so fast.

So maybe it could be better if ppl could buy the best technology there is today - and enjoy the technology as it is now. If ppl r gonna wait and wait - there's no end....hehe...and although patience is a virtue, too long a wait can make us go psycho as well. But that is whta i think. No harm waiting....but when u get a projector, do this - stop reading reviews! You're gonna have tha buyer's remorse and that is something which u do not want to go through...

Actually i got into this projector deal when ppl were raving about infocus x1 over at avsforums...like 3, 4 years ago...was constantly lurking in the forum every single day those days. Then came Benq 6100 into the scene and ppl were raving about it as well. I wanted to get the BenQ back then- but i guess a bit too late to Msia. No one even heard of BenQ that time...haha

And during that time, there were very very few ppl in Msia who are into projectors...so since i can't wait anymore and money wasn't really that much...i just jumped into the bandwagon...actually got the dell because it has some sort like a 14 day monye back guarantee...got it, tried it and had the wow factor - the wow factor was quite similar when i got when i tried infocus x1 those days (the xi was about RM5K+ i guess - the dell was just RM4K+..so why pay more?)...so the dell was a keeper...

if it sucked i think i would have had sent it back already...haha

and yes, if any of u are wondering - an svga dell can give a better pic than your regular tv if you know how to tweak it properly. And of course the large screen size will make u want to throw your tv too...but for cheap dlp svga, better to not go beyond 80"...heck, i'm only having a 70" - enough for me ler...

So, my point here is just to tell the ppl here that u dont really need to have rm10K to start a hobby like this...ppl in the west started with only a Panasonic AE100 4, 5 years ago - and they still had the wow factor back then coz that was the best technology...now AE100 is considered jurassic already i think - bad screendoor this baby has..hehe

but Tim - nice setup - when i have some more money (dunno how?) - i'll surely upgrade

i'll try to post some screenshots of my el-cheapo theater soon...watching LOTR or The Matrix there still brings me the wow factor for the modest price i paid - so who say cheap is always bad?
*
Thanks for the compliment.
But you need to check out some OK budget projectors now. Since you owned the Dell for so long, why not check out some new range now? Cheaper ones like Optoma or even Epson... Check it out. If want good package, AE900 is giving free bulb which costs around RM1600.

QUOTE(laowai @ Feb 1 2007, 08:36 AM)
Always wonder about DLPs .... the big plus is the high contrast and vivid colors. But hearing about the headaches from watching movies for too long, I really wonder if it's psychological. I myself haven't got a chance to watch a long movie from DLP ... so can't quote. Maybe to some, the headaches is not because of the spinning wheel, but from the high contrast causing the eyes to strain.

Curious .... to owners with high contrast ratio projectors (DLP or LCD), when watching in the dark, do you actually adjust down down the contrast (in the end back to square 1....low contrast)?

Added on February 1, 2007, 8:39 amTimothyy, good effort you done there.

Took some balls to paint such a high contrasting color on that wall ..... the opposite of your overall home's color theme.

Looking at the mount, looks like you skipped the 4th screw on purpose... too much effort required right?
*
DLP projectors are not like last time anymore. Many things have been minimised.

Anyway, on the 4th screw, I couldn't get the drill penetrate (sound so XXX) deep enough. So, I got to skip it. 3 wall plugs is more than enough.

Good idea. But I think if I didn't post the pic here, none of us would have noticed it. My sisters, parents, bro in laws, colleagues have been to my house. They didn't even notice it. KEkeke...

I did ask the dealer who sold me the projector. It was a universal mounting and she wanted to charge me RM280 just for the mounting alone.

Furthermore, my mounting was 17 inch long. Of course, it is not as flexible as universal mounting...

I got a question, where do u put your crt tv? Put it at the corner? Or in the room? I have to drop the idea of setting it up in my medium room cause my brother is going to stay with me. If i put it in the living room just above my 32" LCD, it will be too high. and i cant afford to move the LCD everytime i wanna use the projector. Thinking of using motorized screen, but heard that the screen may get crumble overtime, plus its a lot more expensive that a fix screen. I am having an idea that making a screen like yours, then mount it in the way that it can be slide in from the side with some slider like a sliding door, since i have plenty of space on the left. Hmm, must be a lot of work. Oh to be able to do that i must first wall-mount my LCD since now it is sitting on a carbinet. Anyone did this before? Not sure how it will wroks?
*
My CRT is in the room now. ALthough the room becomes kinda small but where else I can throw it??? cry.gif cry.gif cry.gif

how come no one here consider dell projectors? good value right?
*
Well, there are 2 types of projectors available in the market.. multimedia and home theater.

Dell Malaysia more onto Multimedia projectors where as what we discuss here mostly on home theater.

Usually, multimedia PJ has

High lumens, low contrast

Home theater PJ has
Low lumens, high contrast

Ever heard a phrase saying "when a one eye man in a town full of blind men, he is considered the king?" Something like this la...

Kekeke...

Anyway, what I am trying to say is, when u have nothing to compare, of course you will go whatever that you have. I used to watch movies from office projector projecting onto the white board or wall paper.

Once you have tried the home theater projector, don't think you will ever want to go back to the conventional multimedia projector.

Slower than your JVC? In what sense? Navigation speed? Time taken to read the dvds? Honestly, JVC has stopped selling dvd players, they have removed them from their website. Honestly, the 76H is value for money at this price, it reads all discs perfectly even though it's no high end machine, it is still a decent performer. My aunt just got one to match her new Samsung LCD. Using it to watch those TVB serials on dvds. Hahaha. Overkill eh?
*
Sorry le... I say your baby slow. Kekeke...

In terms of responding to our commands... like switching it on from Standby, opening the CD tray, reading the disc... all slow.

But it doesn't really bother me.

Well, how to compare Pentium III and Pentium Core 2 Duo? Kekekeke... Its the same. At that time, it might be the best but now, new models come and go.

Sony 76H is OK for me. smooth. The slowness does not bother me so its ok.

Just strip the cable's jacket and splice it with more wire, that's all. You'll probably have to get a soldering iron and some solder to do this, but heck it isn't that hard. 2 Minute job at most.
*
2min? This I donno but yeah... you can do this.

What kinda cable? Usually, surround sound is not that important. So, normal copper cables can do the job. Unless you have expensive audio system then you might want to look into monster cables and such... but that will end up more expensive than your pioneer satellite.

Either RM5 per meter or RM1.50 per meter...
Rule of thumb is... if the original is this size, you don't need to get the additional one double the size... same size will do.

But if the ori is using silver coated, then its better to follow...

My 2 cent

Well, usually, those pioneer or LG or Samsung satellite system use normal copper cables. Size also may be 1.5mm only. So... nothing much to worry. Any cables as long as good soldering job, will give u ok sound.

Firstly, thanks for the complement.

On the CPU DVD... now, try playing your DVD on Windows Media Player and other DVD player software like Power DVD and compare the quality... you will see the difference...

That is why I am solely using a DVD player for DVDs. I got a kinda high end computer but still not using it as my HTPC...

Well, those HDMI DVD players basically will help to upscale you movies to 720p or 1080i. Of course, you will need to use HDMI cables.

If you want to go 1080p, you will need blu ray disc or HDDVD... but for time being, you might not want to invest on such new tech... wait another 3 or 4 years... it will get cheaper.

Right now, 720p is enuff...

I just had a look at your projectors colour uniformity issue.  It is a lot worse than the unit that I auditioned, where the cyan and red bars only appeared on the extreme left and right of the screen, about 1.5cm only.

In your case it is visible when watching movies and this is annoying.  As such it is serious enough to warrant a replacement or refund.  How are you progressing with Panasonic on that front?

Just want to add that I detect some Hot Spotting on your screen, i.e. the center of the picture is a lot brighter than the sides.  This is due to the screen material used.  I am using a matt white wall, and on very bright scenes like snow or paper/map scene in LOTR, you can just about detect the hotspot.
*
Elo.
Ya lo... luckily when watching movie, its hardly noticeable. The green andred line is worse than my previous one. Yup... they changed th lens and bulb for me when I sent in last time.

The Tech staff is kinda nice. I have been emailing him and he has been trying to call me on and off. Right now, the machine still with me.

The hot spotting, it is not as bad but heck... sure got le. I am using Black Out Cloth. But when watching movie, you won't notice it a all.

Whao, nice setup.

I used to have my Sanyo Z1 set up and have been enjoying HT movie for quite a while. Recently I did some renovation and re-arranged all my furnitures so I am in the mid of resetting up everything. I have completed all the mounting etc and I missing just 13 meters of component cables. Does anyone know where I can I find reasonably priced component cables? I am looking for thinner component cables so that I can route it through the ceiling and not worrying about thick trunking.

My 6 meters component cables probably need a new owner.
