Hope to get some advice from frequent travelers here, will be traveling with a 5 year old.
4 days Amsterdam
5 days Brussels/Paris
5 days London
1 day York
5 days Edinburgh

Or skip Belgium and spend more days in UK
5 days Amsterdam
7 days London
2 day York
6 days Edinburgh

The trains between cities will be via Eurail Global Pass, price wise not much difference

We are planning to arrive in Amsterdam and departing via Edinburgh... i find the first itinerary best as everything is nearby and coverage is maximized
But leaning towards Belgium as Paris is not so safe for smaller kids... I am open to suggestions, thanks notworthy.gif

U can spend 2 days at tbe hague too if u have ample times to explore rather than stay in amsterdam for 5 days.
U can spend in brussel in 1 day and stay in Paris for a couple of days. The rest should be fine. Bear in mind if u have global pass u need to pay for a reservation fee ranging 10 to 30 euro each.
*
thanks for the reply smile.gif

we didn't spend much time in Amsterdam in the previous trip, just the windmill day tour, Anne Frank, some light window shopping, didn't even have time to visit red light district, canal and other stuff bangwall.gif
so this round thought of putting in a bit more time, Keukenhof, windmills, maybe Castle Muiderslot, more shopping maybe to please the queen
anything special about The Hague? or Rotterdam?

for Brussels, we are planning to visit Antwerp, Bruges and Ghent... also train world in Brussels for the little one

Paris was initially in the plan but might skip for safety reasons... we can go again when he's older... wife watched too much Taken laugh.gif

yeah, after calculating, its still much cheaper to get the Global Pass with the seat reservations, 3 days in 30 days pass is only EUR434, plus all reservations its just shy of EUR600... 1 way Amsterdam to London via Eurostar already cost EUR300-400, depending on the time you choose

Pickpocket is everywhere around the world not only in Paris....just put an extra precaution and alert of people surround u.
*
yeah, but if in KL i know what to lookout for and what dodgy places to avoid
As a tourist in another city, there's only limited preparation you can do
and your guard kinda loosen because the priority is focused on protecting the little one

the hague nothing much...
rotterdam worth visiting for a day trip...
try giethoorn too if time is not an issue
when are you going again ?

paris pickpocket issue ?
some advise for you:
- don't walk in small/dark alleys where no soul is there
- don't keep all your cash in one spot, divide into few stash and keep at different spots
- don't squeeze inside big crowds
- keep your wallet in front of you when walking thru big crowds (if unavoidable)
- keep your beg in front of you when walking thru big crowds (if unavoidable)

so far i have not experienced any pickpocket or robbery..however after going to paris twice...not really keen anymore

might have a change in plans, maybe doing just Britain and Scotland as there seems to be much more to see in Scotland and more relaxed self drive
3 nights Edinburgh (arrive)
6 nights northern Scotland (drive to from Edinburgh to Iverness, Skye, etc and arrive in Glasgow)
2 nights Glasgow
take a train to London
6 nights London
take a train to York
2 nights York
take a train to Edinburgh
1 night Edinburgh (depart)

Just wondering, since you are around an hour or so to Durham from York, have you thought of going to Durham as well? It's a good place to visit too.
*
the reason for choosing York was solely for the train museum laugh.gif

anything in Durham that you highly recommend? restaurants as well?

The train museum. Not a bad choice. How about the York Minster? Actually I feel that the York Museum is an interesting place to go to as well.

For Durham? Since we always visit in the morning, Flat White is the choice for breakfast. Durham is pretty small - the Cathedral, the castle and that's almost about it. You can walk around the city. Slow stroll, just to see the Cathedral from the other side of the river etc.

need to please my son as well, part of Scotland trip will include the Jacobite train

thanks for the info, will add that into my itinerary thumbup.gif

anything else to recommend? brows.gif

Please your son? Animals? Dinosaurs? Then must go to National History Museum in London. I think that one will definitely suit kids more if I am comparing it to the British Museum.

What else do you want to know? Kelvingrove in Glasgow? Haha.
*
thanks for the info bro thumbup.gif

have you done self drive in Scotland? Inverness, Loch Ness, Skye, etc?

No probs. Just let me know if you need anything.

And yes, we've done a bit of drive in Scotland. It's nice to drive but sometimes, we'd just take the buses/tour just for the fun of it. We've spent some time in Aberdeen too. Was there as a friend stayed there so we'd drop by whenever we can.

If you are going to catch musicals in London, do book them online for the more "famous" ones. If not, you can try at the booths at Leicester Square. They will give you a good deal if you are buying a few of them. As for Lion King in London, there are times when it's just sold out - months and months away.
*
Thanks bro, once I come out with the "flow", I will ping you smile.gif

If you are driving up to Edinburgh from North England, remember must take "the highlands route" if you have time. Super recommended if you like scenic route. This route you will pass by the highland of Scotland before reaching to Edinburgh. Super super scenic! Miss those days travelling to Scotland!
*
Thanks bro! Which side is this highland route from London? Edinburgh or Glasgow side?

I come to Scotland for 2 months business trip, stay in Dundee. So, I have some free time to travel around in the weekend. I went to Isle of Skye in one weekend, and Edinburgh in last weekend. Any other places you can suggest for a weekend trip (2 or 3 days)?
*
haven't been to UK yet, but I'd do Inverness and Glencoe where there Harry Potter train is and Glasgow

did you drive to Skye? how's the food and accommodation there like?

Isn't the places u mention are in UK?!

Yes, drove to Skye. And went to Glenfinnan Viaduct too, while on the way to Skye.
Food and accommodation in Skye, expensive loh. Skye is a place for tourists. Always raining. If summer, sure traffic jam.

Glenfinnan Viaduct aka Harry Potter Bridge

they are but i've not been there, just doing research laugh.gif

hmmm... need to choose the period properly then, or choose alternative accommodation instead of Skye

thanks bro thumbsup.gif

Hi, i am planning a 2 week self drive around eastern europe, namely czech, poland, hungary and slovakia.

Anyone who has done a similar trip can advise which city you flew in and out? its not economical to fly in and out from diff countries due to expensive drop off rates if you return the rental in a diff country.

I am hesitatating to use the rail as the travelling time seems to be rather long (for day trains), and am not particularly comfortable to do an overnight train either.  doh.gif
Hi, do u need to purchase seperate vignettes when entering czech and austria? Are they difficult to purchase en route?
*
last time i stayed in Munich and did Munich-Salzburg return by train

then Munich-Prague by bus as it was faster and cheaper than train
