Most likely self-drive. For the aurora spotting, is it better to follow tour?

I missed the aurora spotting season, so can't comment on that. I followed bus tour as going to Iceland was a last minute decision, no time to plan. It was professionally organized and stress free.

Don't put too much high hopes on Aurora. Tour or not. I was there for a lot of days and didn't spot it in Iceland. I saw it somewhere else instead.

It's all luck based. Even in Norway, Finland etc. Aurora is very much luck based. If you are lucky, you'd get it for few nights. If not... well, that's it. One of my hiking guides in Iceland was like they didn't see it for 1 month plus when I asked them about it too.

Oh yeah. Self drive is fun. Stop anywhere you feel that is worth taking your time to enjoy, take photos with the horses along the roads etc. Ring road has a lot of gem to explore. Try use the smaller roads too, there are some "unknown" waterfalls, scenic views along the way.

Yeap, free and easy if self drive. For the car rental, is it advisable to get a 4x4 during the winter season although most cars are equipped with winter tires

I drove with 4x4. There are days without snow but crazy wind. You'd feel the wind too. Crazy rain. Oh yeah, the car skidded on snow too. But that's an experience. It was on the route to geysir/national park when it skidded. What a journey.

Drop plenty of times in snow but yeah. It still happens since you'd probably get all weather tyres if it's not snowing.
