In the Name of the God-Emperor and the Imperium of Mankind, I greet you all.

It has been a pleasure participating in the tourney. I look forward to more participation, and events in the future.

For your delectation, I present a recent combat report from a detachment of Imperial Guardsmen engaged with a Tau xeno incursion. Input as always to improve the efficiency of the God-Emperor's hammer is always appreciated.

(1 VS 1)
Factions: Imperial Guard versus Tau
Map: Battle Marshes
Duration: 26+ Minutes
Attached File  2P_BATTLE_MARSHES.2007_02_04.15_24_01.zip ( 145.08k ) Number of downloads: 6

Early 3 Guardsman squad mass with Command Squad + Hard tech to basilisks + Assassin, Ogryn wrecking team with Priest support and one of the God Emperor's Baneblade superheavy tanks versus the Tau xeno strategy of early Vespid harass + Fire Warrior Mass + Crisis Suit with Flamer Rush and final Hammerhead tank push.

Technically incorrect. Numerous other factors have to be taken into account - Command Squad composition, economy, defensive strongpoints and possible crossfire lanes for LP2s, turrets and Infantry Commands since you'll have to milk every advantage to survive long enough to reach Mechanised Command. Not only do you have to manage your Command Squad to disrupt enemy units, you have to micromanage your Guardsmen squads to ensure they don't get too much incoming fire and in the case of a close up melee, you need to dance and bayonet whatever is weaker than you in close combat and keep running from whatever is stronger.

Asking your Guardsman to walk away because they are receiving fire is hardly consider as micro biggrin.gif

More like making sure they run for the nearest cover, cycling out broken squads and those with too many casualties to the rear to regroup and moving fresh ones up to take their place. That does require micro while dodging and keeping their distance from a bunch of raving machete wielding heretics and bolter blazing Chaos Marines. xD Agh.

Wouldn't a single basilisk be a priority in T2 to keep incoming heavy infantry units dispersed? Always needed that to dissuade incoming Fire Warrior, Marine or Berzerker squads to keep their distance.

I'd join you gentlemen except I live 56 klicks away down south and a trip up north is at least two hours either way to Subang and back. Perhaps if it was a daytime lunch gig.

Anyone here plays on Gamespy? Would be great to have a match and meet up in one of the quieter rooms to organise one like the Maelstrom.

Another confirmed buff for the Imperial Guard is that the Command Squad gets a researchable upgrade that gives the General a plasma weapon, the Psyker a power weapon, the Commissar a power fist, the Priest an Eviscerator and the possibility of recruiting Kasrkin sergeant bodyguards. Oh yes! More dakka!

Anyway here is my take: If everything goes according to plan IG actually owns Tau in tier 1, that is, if you got everything running right.

Waba's guide to Anti Tau build for IG in Tier 1

Blasted grey skins pinned you down?
Time for boot camp!

I) Know the odds
Standardly speaking if both players are about the same level IG vs Tau is one of the worst match up for a new IG player, for your guardsman will melt in the face of fire warriors, some "advance skill" is required to even up the odds, lets see:

Here is how, for a standard IG BO in T1 you will have:

1 CS
3 GMs
1 or 2 Commissars
2 techpriest

Where as Tau might have

1 vespid (optional)
2~3 FW
1 TC (gonna be late if he goes vespid)
1 to 2 SS <--- zero threat except for ecomical in T1, ignored
2 Earthcaste <--- 0 threat, ignored

if Tau go kroots you wont have to worry about TC for some time.

Your insight into Imperial Guard tactics is very informative. My thanks on behalf of the mud sloggers among us who have but flashlights and T-shirts to deal with the horrors of the Warp and fell xenos.

Some questions though ...

The build in question seems very T1 heavy. The use of a turret (30 power), a fully kitted out Command Squad (100 power with 1 General and 2 Psykers), and 2 Commisars (80 power), require 210 units of power...almost doubling the delay to reach T2. This may require 2 or more generators and a more defensive build. Are you banking on an all out earlier offensive to sledgehammer the Tau to death? What of holding on and then cranking out HWTs and Chimera spam?

I've seen your earlier replay on Quest's Triumph. The defensive turret within two strategic points was an interesting tactic though wouldn't it be more expedient to put it closer to his base entrance? I've seen several other replays where they went for a double turret strategy and locked down both relics. Which would be a more tactically sound approach?

In a straight up fight - what are the odds with a fresh Vespid team and an IG squad with a Commisar ? Is it worth it to detach the commisar and give them 2 targets?

hey guys, I need a question answered here.

What is overwatch, how do it use it and what does it do?
*
Overwatch is a game mechanic whereby you automatically reinforce squads and automatically add members or items of equipment to them. Take your average Space Marine Scout Squad. If you right click the + icon, you tell them to automatically add members until they reach their maximum squad member limit. Right click their weaponry once you manage to acquire it and they will automatically kit themselves with the relevant weapon until they reach their maximum weapon limit.

I'm playing Space Marines...

Seems like my greatest weakness is harassing. Without harassment, my opponent can easily tech up way faster than me. There was once another SM went straight to Ls while I was still using scouts (with t2 plasma upgrade path)

if its score wise, Then people with 300-400 games record, but somehow still on the 1000 score will be matched with me as well? No wonder so imba.

A tip: Save your replays and watch it from your opponent's side with Fog of War off and then watch it again with Fog of War on from your side. See what he does and try to emulate his moves. He probably tried hard teching for a landspeeder rush. Theoretically it's possible in 4 minutes but I could be wrong. I do play on GS quite a bit. Look me up and we can rack up a game or two.

PS : They also say the same word, "gl hf" then pwn me.

It's also a tactic to delay you. The time it takes for you to press Chat and reply is time you could have micromanaged something. Every second counts for fast deployment. Formalities can wait until your enemies are smoking chunks of debris and mangled bodies under your boot.

Here's hoping that patch comes out by the time the competition hits so we won't be overrun by a wave of walking metallic undead and power suit packing blue skinned xenos. Long live the Imperial Guard!

Yup - automatch does clog up on more than one occasion and hangs at the 2/2 matchup screen. I had to quit and log in again to retrigger the automatch thing. Strangely enough, BM seems to pop up as an automatch map more ofthen than any other map lately - 10 matches....6 of them on Battle Marshes.

Does anyone have by any chance a copy of the Imperial Infantryman's Uplifting Primer?

1.2 offers the Guard a chance against a swarm of deranged Tau nutjobs swarming with Fire Warriors and early Vespids and the Necron death march. With a buff in bunker damage and stackable Priest abilities, things are looking up. The Assassin may have been downgraded slightly, but the other infantry oriented upgrades help the IG immeasurably. Unless all we want to see is a bunch of Tau and Necron beating each other senseless that is.

Field testing the new Guard and came across this unusual winning game pose when I massacred one fellow on Excellion. Such a heroic, dramatic duo that I felt they deserved a short pictorial. I present, the heroic duo - the Imperial General and Commisar having a work related disagreement. Attached Image Attached Image

Shame for EA if their golden chicken do not lay golden eggs. For sure it will attract a lot of crowds by building up a new game on a series which has already had a huge fanbase since the first ever C&C released. Why be so pessimistic ??

Waba or anyone who train hard on GS, did you guys manage to play against any decent/good IG ?? I've been playing GS over these few nights but failed to meet any IG. Mind to post any replays against any IG you guys met ?? I'm wondering how IG evolve in this new patch. hmm.gif

Check out replays by [CiC] Smith, DAS CAPN, Troubleshooter and 4Servant. These are so far the best IG players on Relic. Playwise, IG players are now much more reliant on earlier Tactica and grenade launcher massing. There is also a higher dependence on HWTs in T2 and a reliance on attached priests with Commissars taking a backseat this time except for morale management issues. The name of the game is the million man march.

What are you talking about? Vindicare has been nerfed kau kau
*
He's right. The Vindicare now has reduced damage, his Scope doesn't extend sight range anymore, he has no cloaking by default and has to be researched and generally acts as ranged support as opposed to an officer head-hunter with one-shot-kill capability. He's still efficient at picking off units here and there behind the main battle line, but on the whole his effectiveness is significantly reduced.

That and the Imperial Basilisk with reduced movement and rate of fire.

Forces of good and evil!

The time has come to determine who is the strongest and who shall rule the galaxy. The Battle Marshes of Cybertime Internet Cafe has version 1.2 installed to ensure a ruthless battle, the 31st of March 2007 will be written down in history!

Commanders must be at the battlefield at 1030 for a mission briefing, failing to attend the briefing will result in corporate punishment, witnessed by your forces that will lower their morale, leading to instant annihilation.

Should commanders may not make it, kindly inform me so that i can make the adjustments. Kindly inform your brethrens participating in this tournament in case they might miss this.

To battle my brothers, kill all who stand in our way!

A glorious victory in battle. The five man free-for-all was the highlight of the day. Hope the Inquisitor managed to save that replay. It was my finest hour...as well as my Heavy Weapon Teams that gave their lives and their lascannon to ensure victory.

I do play online on DC - look out for angelicffg
