A newbie to the auto trans-scene, previously on manual since day 1 I learnt to drive.

I have this habit of automatically shifting the D to N at stoplights and engaging the handbrake immediately.

Unless of course, during bumper-to-bumper crawl where I will just stick to D and apply the brakes to slow the car down.

In terms of engaging it to P, was told and read somewhere that (I think it was the downloaded pdf manual for my car), the correct method is, from D, shift to N, lift up the handbrake and then only engage to P.

Meaning that, the load/weight will/should be applied to the handbrake first, not to P.

I have been doing this eversince I've been driving the auto.

Just my 2 cents.

P is used when you are going to park your car, not use in the middle of a red light or jam.

Yes, I'm aware of that.

The 4th paragraph of my post talks about the correct way of engaging P when when we park the car, not during bumper to bumper crawl.
