Okay folks, have set up the new Onyx Discussion Thread over yonder: https://goo.gl/sRLdei

So yeah now we can slowly transition the Onyx talk to somewhere more specific, and lessen the load over here for the benefit of the folks interested in (and seeking support for) the other Illegear offerings.

As promised, the video on the Onyx's keyboard and also the Fan Boost (aka the fan at full speed). Please excuse the static in the background and the slightly dark video (I need to get myself better equipment, plus this is my first time churning out a video), but otherwise I'd say the sound is pretty representative of what you'd hear in use (expecially if you're using headphones to view the video).

So yeah, normal typing force initially and then harder typing. There's that Windows beep there too (somewhere on the middle) to give you a reference point of sound levels  (unintended but pretty helpful lol).

ALSO, the I had the laptop on a really wobbly plastic container (only "base"I had around that was free) so don't mind the laptop wobbling around while I was punching the keys hard.

And, just to reiterate, that fan doesn't sound like that ALL the time.

Oh, and I managed to film Onyx disassembly for upgrades/maintenance as well. As I can junk the sound on that one you can look forward to a less static-y video when I'm done with it.

Thank you so much for the upload. That is loud - and I use a Cherry MX Brown daily, which annoys my family occasionally. It is worth considering the ‘sidegrade’ like for the Raven

Or you know, an Apple Wireless KB... brows.gif

As for the Procs, it's probably that... or, it might simply be that it's fractionally cheaper, which adds up when you buy container-loads of Procs for mass production. The fact it runs cooler also means you get to save a bit on cooling design as well, and hence the savings snowball - leading to increased profits.

It's not that your average consumer is going to miss much from having the 8750H over the 8850H.

Plus, the Onyx (GK5CN) and the Zeph GM501/GX501 notwithstanding, the other thin/lights already out aren't exactly coping all that well heatwise with "just" the 8750H either lol (or at least that's what their respective Owners Threads over at Notebookreview Forums are leading me to believe anyway).

Speaking of cooling, which model (Onyx, RavenElite, Laguna) handles the 8750H the best?

Haven't tested the Raven Elite and the Laguna myself, but Notebookcheck has a review if the Laguna at least under PC Specialist Proteus something something (though that one is with a 7700HQ, so add a few degrees c to that).

And you can compare the temps recorded to that review to the 83c (CPU) and the 80c (GPU) the Onyx gets - also max 50c external temps and average of around 38c.

The Raven uses a similar keyboard so no.

HOWEVER, the Raven / Raven Elite MIGHT be getting a membrane (read: quieter) keyboard option, and the Onyx might also get one later along the road.

The closest one (from Illegear) with a less clicky keyboard might just be the Laguna, once it gets upgraded to CFL-H anyway.

@Eiraku, many thanks for all the info. This is my first time going for a laptop (desktop all my life), so all this is really useful.

The Laguna seems to have decent cooling (from the Notebookcheck review), but mainly due to an aggressive fan curve. I’m hoping that is no longer a problem once the Laguna with CFL-H arrives.

Based on what I’ve rad so far, laptops are more prone to problems and a company wth good services attitude is really important.

Oh yeah....one last thing, if ever possible, giving customers the choice of G-SYNC or Optimus would really be nice. I know 144 Hz screen is nice, but GSYNC could be great.

Unfortunately getting G-sync isn't as easy as paying and getting it... Nvidia needs to certify the entire system (GPU, CPU + display panel) as "properly" G-Sync compatible before Illegear can do anything.

Plus, the Onyx at least can already do external G-Sync fine. Not sure if the Laguna can too, but I don't see why it can't.

Will it damage my laptop if the temperature constantly at below 85C during gaming or while installing something huge?

It happens only during plugged in otherwise will constantly below 65C, where to lower the performance? Scare will be damaged if keep at high temperature.

Hi meaninglessx7

80C is normal for i7-8750H with turbo boost enabled =)
CPU temperature is generally higher than GPU temperature.

If you aren't really rushing to get one, then maybe I could suggest you should wait if there's any promotion.

If not, sure, you should. So far after 2 weeks of usage, it works quite well.

4th variant of meltdown/spectre vulnerability , reported by microsoft and google sweat.gif

4th variant meltdown/spectre microoft site

QUOTE
What is affected?
AMD, ARM, and Intel CPUs are affected by CVE-2018-3639 to varying degrees.

What is the risk?
Microsoft currently assesses the risk posed by CVE-2018-3639 to our customers as low. We are not aware of any exploitable instances of this vulnerability class in our software at this time, but we are continuing to investigate and we encourage researchers to find and report any exploitable instances of CVE-2018-3639 as part of our Speculative Execution Side Channel Bounty program. We will adapt our mitigation strategy for CVE-2018-3639 as our understanding of the risk evolves.

What is the mitigation?
Microsoft has already released mitigations as part of our response to Spectre and Meltdown that are applicable to CVE-2018-3639 in certain scenarios, such as reducing timer precision in Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer.  Software developers can address individual instances of CVE-2018-3639 if they are discovered by introducing a speculation barrier instruction as described in Microsoft’s C++ developer guidance for speculative execution side channels. Microsoft is working with CPU manufacturers to assess the availability and readiness of new hardware features that can be used to resolve CVE-2018-3639. In some cases, these features will require a microcode or firmware update to be installed. Microsoft plans to provide a mitigation that leverages the new hardware features in a future Windows update.

and it seems even current 8th gen processors are affected...

also, intel may release new version of 8th gen processors that will be free of this.

Hi wongth7,

The recent right click 0.5s laggy issue is caused by the windows 10 recent patch. It can be resolved by rolling back to early edition or wait for the new patches.
