Guys, how loud exactly is the mechanical keyboard? I like mechanical keyboards - but my family hates noise. Means I cannot bring the laptop out of the work/study room.
*
I'll record a video later in a quiet room and you can judge yourself (just in case you're not within a stones throw to Illegear's offices to check it out). Of course, it will be recorded from about ear level (and then adjusted to the approximate level that my ears can hear) to be fair as there's no real reason to poke a camera right next to the keys and THEN lement how noisy the keys are lol.

Oh, and while I'm at it, maybe I'll just press the full fan button (aka the "fan boost") and you can hear the fans in all its glory too - though be advised that it's not like THAT all the time.

Didn't have the chance to do it earlier as my "Work Base" is really, really noisy lol.

Your typical Chicony 150w brick (for the 1060 units), not too big or heavy, just about the length of an adult palm out to the fingertips.

If you want something more compact, go eBay the Razer Blade 14's 155w adapter - it should fit without any hassle too.

The 1050/ti units both have smaller bricks, as to be expected.

Great to know that the manufacturer is actively churning out updates and upgrades while our people at Illegear is working hard towards making those available here.

Battery, keyboard and screen options are good but I'm waiting for news about adaptive charging as well as whether switching between i- and dGPU can be done within Windows.

I chanced upon a thread about the Onyx barebones in general on NBR and our friend Eiraku did contribute a fair bit to the discussion. I couldn't find the link as I'm on the phone right now. So anyone interested can get any info there too but it's nice of Illegear to be upfront, so to speak, about upgrades in the pipeline.

As promised, the video on the Onyx's keyboard and also the Fan Boost (aka the fan at full speed). Please excuse the static in the background and the slightly dark video (I need to get myself better equipment, plus this is my first time churning out a video), but otherwise I'd say the sound is pretty representative of what you'd hear in use (expecially if you're using headphones to view the video).

So yeah, normal typing force initially and then harder typing. There's that Windows beep there too (somewhere on the middle) to give you a reference point of sound levels (unintended but pretty helpful lol).

ALSO, the I had the laptop on a really wobbly plastic container (only "base"I had around that was free) so don't mind the laptop wobbling around while I was punching the keys hard.

And, just to reiterate, that fan doesn't sound like that ALL the time.

Oh, and I managed to film Onyx disassembly for upgrades/maintenance as well. As I can junk the sound on that one you can look forward to a less static-y video when I'm done with it.

Nope the base I had the thing on was an empty plastic container (with a rather flexible top), so when I was punching the keyboard, the entire container was wobbling bad adding to the apparent screen movement.

The container was the only thing around at the time for me to put the Onyx on unfortunately, but it was my bad nonetheless.

Normally the screen doesn't wobble much at all when put on a properly grounded base, but it's a thin and light after all. Heck the GS65 was even worse in this regard when I tested it out at Digital Mall (yeah they have one display unit over there).

Yup. Can someone recommend any skin? Or keyboard protective film on onyx?

I have oily fingers lol. Later I type and wipe, type and wipe... it's gonna end up being a long video. Also, it looks fancy in an weird kind of way, like a mime with a white glove kinda thing.

And yeah, skin-wise I have an entire roll of translucent CF sticker just waiting to be applied, DIY if course.

There's also a few skin places I know of that does laptops, like Mobile Outfitters, HAO Cheras and that place at the basement of OU near the ATMs. They might be pricey though.

And due to the bespoke design of the keyboard, I don't think anyone has a silicone keyboard protector out for it just yet. Once its out, it MIGHT turn out to be a good solution to the clicky problem IMHO.

Unfortunately, not at the moment. You'll either have to adapt your typing style to minimise clickiness or get an external keyboard that is less clicky, both not optimal solutions of course.

Also, a silicone keyboard protector (see above) might help muffle the sound, once those become available for the Onyx.

That said, the powers that be @Illegear might see it fit to offer a less clicky membrane keyboard "sidegrade" to the Onyx as well (as they are going to for the Raven line)... IF, of course, there is sufficient interest.

Personally, I find the clickiness relaxing, but that's probably just me. But I do have to admit that having to control my typing strength for use in quiet areas might be a bit of a PITA for me too probably.

Anyway, I have just FINALLY Installed FC5 to play... and apparently the EasyAntiCheat thing (something like the old Punkbuster stuff) that gets installed alongside FC5 REALLY doesn't like the Onyx Command Center (as it does a lot of other RGB/system control software, so this isn't limited to Illegear/TongFang).

FC5 runs fine after you exit/kill the thing though.

Prince J Did you notice this? Or have some of your customers (mostly Raven/Raven Elite/Onyx folks) come forward with issues running FC5, which might just be due to this.

Maybe I should whip up a bat file that kills the CC before running FC5 and restart the CC when I exit the game. Used to do it for Mass Effect 3 way back when because it clashed with Dexpot (a desktop manager).

At least before Ubi decides to fix the bloody thing (or TongFang manages to release a CC that doesn't trigger EAC, but yeah, I don't think that's gonna be easy).

FC5 itself runs beautifully though. 62FPS average on Ultra off the built in benchmark (on Nvidia's 391.35 drivers).

Hi kyLL

We will have a bigger battery for existing / new user to upgrade in June/July 18 but have to sacrifice the 2.5" SATA HDD/SSD space.

ONYX's 144Hz IPS upgrade option will be available in June 18.
*
I'm from the UK and will definitely pick one up when they appear here. The UK company PC Specialist offer it here (release is imminent, but not appeared just yet) - https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/notebooks/recoil-ii-15/ - in fact they seem to be the only one's doing it in the UK, but they aren't being as communicative about possible upgrades as you guys. This model - the "Recoil II" - i think is identical to the Onyx (both I think are TongFang GK5CN)...which i'm assuming will mean that i'll also be able to sacrifice the HDD/SSD space for the bigger battery. SO my question is if you know if this mod will be relatively easy to do as a DIY job? And do you know if batteries will have to be TongFang approved or something? It'd be handy to know so that when I buy it I opt out of the HDD in preparation for the new battery.

Thanks!

Woah, hey there man! First I bid you welcome to Lowyat.net, considering how far you travelled from Reddit to here.

As for the battery question, I'll tag the resident Illegear reps for you (paging AZIM@ILLEGEAR and Prince J ) so that they can answer your queries for you.

But as for a timeframe at least, Prince J has already stated previously that the battery will hit alongside the 144hz screen upgrade, which will be around June-July.

Haha Eiraku, thanks! Yes, all the way from Reddit to here, I'm skulking every corner of the iNTerWeBS to learn about the GK5CN before I lay down that cash. The anticipation of getting one is killing me!

Oh I got your Reddit reply in regards to the "silencer" hack (o-rings on switch stem hack) you posted.

Have answered that, but in short, the GK5CN mech keyboard switches are structurally different (we don't use stems), so the hack doesn't apply.

BUT, we can use the same principle and try to pad the insides of our caps with something else that fits instead. Maybe vinyl stickers or something.

HOWEVER, I'm not sure of how much of the click we'll be able to dampen, as I'm not really sure if the source of the click is the mainly the cap hitting the switch, or the switch itself engaging.

Anyway, I also forgot to tell you that you might want to Private Message the reps I paged above personally if you want a faster reply. Check out a few pages back, click on their names on their replies, and choose "private message" from the bottom right side of their profile pages.

I got your Reddit post man, cheers! I wan't sure how the switches were made, but indeed they wouldn't work with those o-rings. You're idea using stickers isn't bad at all though, only way to know is ti try it out =D. I may be doing some lengthy library time over the next few years so the keyboard issue is a hot topic for me!

Also, you may know, why is it that the 8850h isn't offered in any of the slimline laptops? It's the same TDP as the 8750h. I know very little about tech things but the only thing that comes to minds is that because the 8750h already runs hot (the Zephyrus GX501 seemed to perform best in Cinebench - perhaps because it has the cooling hinge thing (getting my stats from LTT, for my sins) the 8850h would realistically maybe require better cooling than a slimline could offer..

Or you know, an Apple Wireless KB... brows.gif

As for the Procs, it's probably that... or, it might simply be that it's fractionally cheaper, which adds up when you buy container-loads of Procs for mass production. The fact it runs cooler also means you get to save a bit on cooling design as well, and hence the savings snowball - leading to increased profits.

It's not that your average consumer is going to miss much from having the 8750H over the 8850H.

Plus, the Onyx (GK5CN) and the Zeph GM501/GX501 notwithstanding, the other thin/lights already out aren't exactly coping all that well heatwise with "just" the 8750H either lol (or at least that's what their respective Owners Threads over at Notebookreview Forums are leading me to believe anyway).
