I am planning to purchase a GTX 1080 laptop to pair with my current monitor, and I would like to ask for some opinions and to clear some doubts that I have from you sifu out there.
1. Would I be able to run 1440p @120hz on the monitor if I were to pair it via mini display port?
2. What type of mini displayport cable standard should I look for? 1.2 or 1.3?
3. Where can I find the said cable? Most of the shop I asked don't know what type of cable they sell.

From my past experience with ASUS ROG PG278Q, you definitely need Display Port for it to work at that frequency. Why can't you just use the original Display Port cable that comes with the LCD with your GTX 1080? That should work.
