Underdogs rule the day

August 3rd, 2007

FOR their love of the sport, they were bruised and shot at. But the pain and agony were worth it, especially for the winning teams.

All out attack: Like in real combat, these paintball players know that strategy and co-ordination are very important.

The recent KCHL Penang Paintball Cup, held at Padang Brown, saw a surprise win by Kuala Lumpur-Penang team Werdna Hol in the Pro-Am category.

The team seemed to be doing things right although they were doing them in the opposite way. To begin with, the team's name 'Werdna Hol' was its captain's name spelt in reverse. The team also went to the competition without any proper training or preparation.

On the attack: Two Werdna Hol players taking aim at their rivals.

Team captain Andrew Loh, 31, said the team did not expect to win the competition as they were the underdogs.

"The last competition we were in was last year. We had not played as a team for the past six months.

"We tried to meet for trainings during weekends but most of us were too busy with work," said the paintball enthusiast, who quit his airlines job about a year ago to open a paintball pro shop named Werdna Hol Sportz.

The team did not have an easy win and literally had to shoot their way into winning the Pro-Am title. The team had to play three games against AK 47 from Kuala Lumpur in the finals - drawing the first, winning the second and losing the last.

With the tie, the teams had to 'count heads' to determine the victor. Werdna Hol managed to grip the title by +4 elimination difference, having four players standing at the end of the games compared to AK 47's single player.

Champs: Players from Werdna Hol (front row) and Sogo Ball Busters celebrating their win together.

For the Sogo Ball Busters from Kuala Lumpur, their win in the Am-Novice category did not come as a surprise. The team members came to Penang feeling very positive and played with determination.

Their attitude towards the competition paid off as they beat Kuala Lumpur's Silvia Pink Mini Bus 2-1 in the three-game finals.

Sogo team captain Siti Zalilah Abu Bakar, 33, said the competition was tough as the other teams were very competitive as well.

"It was the team's commitment and cooperation that brought us this far in the competition. We will try to keep up with our performance and do better in the next leg," she said.

Werdna Hol won a pewter trophy and RM2500 while Sogo Ball Busters received a pewter trophy and RM1500.

Pro-Am first runners-up AK 47 pocketed RM1,500 and trophies while third placed Mana Wave re-ceived RM1000 and trophies.

Am-Novice second and third place winners, Silvia Pink Mini Bus and Monkey Bone Misfit, bagged trophies and RM800 and RM400 respectively.

The competition also featured an open-class tournament for professional paintball players. The six teams in the category will be battling it out at the next two legs to decide the winners.

The KCHL Penang Paintball Cup was the third leg of the national paintball competition under the Malaysian Paintball Official Circuit (MPOC). The event was jointly organised by Xtion Paintball Sports Club and Kim Chin Hin Leong (M) Sdn Bhd.

Xtion Paintball Sports Club secretary Raja Anor Shah said it was the first time the competition was held outside Klang since it first began in 2005.

"This is the first time we are having them in other states like Penang, Perlis and Johor," he said, adding that the response in Penang was very encouraging.

"Penang have 10 teams competing at the competition, two in the Pro-Am and eight in the Am-Novice," he said.

The Pro-Am category saw 13 teams battling for the champion's title, while the Am-Novice had 27 teams. The teams were from Penang, Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Perak, Perlis and Negri Sembilan.

A special addition to the KCHL Penang Paintball Cup was the competition's sole foreign team, Red Sevens from Singapore.

Team captain Ben Seow, 29, said that it was the team's second paintball competition in Malaysia. They had earlier competed at the MPOC 2007's second leg in Kuala Lumpur.

Red Sevens, which is Singapore's first paintball team, was trying to learn and improve their skills in the sport so that they could promote paintball in the island republic.

Red Sevens member Jane Koh, 27, who was also president of the Paintball Association of Singapore, said that paintball was an exciting sport that helped to instil teamwork in players.

"It is usually seen as a dangerous sport but as long as everyone abide by the safety rules, paintball can be something that everyone can enjoy and benefit from," she said.

Koh added that they hoped to work together with MPOC to bring paintball tournaments to Singapore and that the collaboration would also help to strengthen ties between the two neighbouring countries.

MPOC 2007 is endorsed by the Ministry of Youth and Sports and Tourism Malaysia.

The fourth leg will be in Perlis next month while the final leg will be in Johor Baru in October.

RESULTS:

Pro-Am:
Finals: Werdna Hol (Sel) beat AK 47 (KL) 1-1; Werdna Hol won by elimination difference +4.
3rd placing: Mana Wave (NS) beat Killer Beez (KL) 3-0.

Am-Novice:
Finals: Sogo Ball Busters (KL) beat Silvia Pink Mini Bus (KL) 2-1,
3rd placing: Monkey Bone Misfit (Sel) beat Gang (Sel) 3-0.
