I'm driving a 2-door Grand Vitara 1.6L and I hate this car.

It's comfortable though, aircon is great, darn cold.

Fuel consumption sucks. Ride's bumpy/floaty, high speeds not very stable (well, what to do? It's a 4WD...), Not very powerful (well, mine's 1.6 only) and oh! did I mentioned that FC sucks?

However it's a pretty decent ride for city or town driving around to work and out. Just sucks along the highway.

extinct? the Vitara was upgraded to the Grand Vitara back in 2000. Check out the new range of Vitaras... damn good looking. Personally, I prefer the Vitaras to the CRVs.

Haha, yeah. I am an owner of vitara 1996 2 doors too. Still can go at 160km/h (max speed) at highway though. But need to hold and grip the steering very hard at that speed. smile.gif

My mum owned a 4-doors Vitara year 1997 before. The car is okie, just that the FC is intolerable.

I have a 1994 3-door Vitara JLX 1.6 Manual (carburetor engine) at home... The FC sucks becoz the gear ratios of the 5-speed manual gearbox are so closely stacked together... shakehead.gif It's awesome if you go off-roading but it's horrific if you drive it on highways... 110km/h at 3,200RPM... shakehead.gif sweat.gif

older 4wd car is designed like that. higher torque and short gear ratio.
anything over 100km/h and the engine sound is louder than ICE full blast laugh.gif

I think the 2 door model uses auto lock hub for 4x4 mode right? there is a tiny switch on the dashboard to the left of the steering wheel. very easy & convenient to use thumbup.gif

vitara or grand vitara.

I got the new grand vitara at home. FC wise, i get about 9.5km/l according to the onboard computer. The engine is old school, nothing fantastic.

I'm in the market for a new car at the moment but not too sure whether should invest in the new grand vitara. I quite like the look and size of the car but haven't test drive so not sure how the handling feels. FC wise, i think it should be better than my current Hyundai Matrix 1.6 model.

1) I own a Vitara JLX 1997 A/T 3-door as 2nd car. Low mileage use to send kids to school - clocked abt 162K km. Like the car. Small size makes it convenient to move abt and park. Car and engine are well maintained and hence good condition. Sent for top overhaul last yr as one of the valves went kaput. The engine was smooth after that but petrol consumption exceptionally high since - about 0.25cts per km or 220km for full tank costing abt RM60 for stop/go town driving.

Problem later traced to old transmissiongear/ oil (car travelled 45,000 km since last change). Just change to synthetic oil. Now smooth perfromance and getting abt 0.18 cts per km.

2) Just to share info - for last few yrs, the car faced problem on leak for the cooling system. Need to top water every week. For yrs could not detect the fault. Only during the overhaul, a hidden rusty water seal was discovered. Apparently, there are a few water seals/water jackets for the cooling system with one hidden (accessible when the cylinder head is removed).

3) Can anyone assist on a problem I'm facing. The old Vitara dashboard air vents/air louvres are fragile. Mine are broken to smithereens. Checked with DRB Suzuki and they don't have stock. Earlier, they sold at RM145 each (for left and right or RM290 per pair), and RM175 each for the centre vents. That's very costly and unfortunately potong kereta people do not have this parts. Help. Does anyone know here to get reasonably priced air vents?
