If you can afford stm go for it. It performs better. Autofocus is faster, quieter and smoother. It has more aperture blades for more round and pleasing bokeh.
The old one has noisy hunting autofocus and has Pentagon bokeh. I would go for the new stm. |

Just needed a second opinion, thanks. The old one has noisy hunting autofocus and has Pentagon bokeh. I would go for the new stm. |

QUOTE(wanna be hi-tech @ Aug 12 2016, 05:21 PM) Nope I'm nikon guy but when I tried both canon 50 1.8 out I prefer the metal to plastic "mount". And it isn't just the mount.. It's the "screw mount" that is plastic. (Strictly speaking lens mount is the part the lenses are attached together, not the screw attachment to the camera). That said most lens mounts are plastic despite a metal screw mount - especially canon.1.4 to 1.8 is negligible, but I prefer the weight and balance of the 1.8 on both canon and Nikon. But the plastic screw mount doesn't inspire longetivity despite having the same lens formula on the 1.8 canon. Other immediate noticeable difference is the bokeh when stopped down. The aperture blades of the old one are not rounded. But that's my opinion. You can view test charts online. |

I tried both old and stm version.
Pic quality no much diff. Just get stm version if price not too expensive. Unless u plan to get cheap second hand unit. |

Stm is more superior for video.but like u say, i should go for STM, not only its a new model, but the metal mount....in long term use would be better i guess. No sound and faster tracking on video. |
