TM Is Exploring Alternative Technologies To Deliver High-Speed Broadband Within Q1 2019

At its #khabarbaik briefing earlier today, the Acting EVP for unifi at TM, Moharmustaqeem (Mohar) Mohammed, has stated that unifi team is looking at alternative technologies in order to deliver high-speed Internet to its customers. While this is something that we have heard before, today is the first time we were informed of a certain target.

Specifically, the unifi team has aimed to determine, test, and deploy these technologies within the first quarter of 2019. When asked about the actual technologies that the team is looking at the moment, Mohar was not able to pinpoint them exactly though as it is something within the purview of TM’s network team.

Nevertheless, Mohar did mention that these technologies could be wireless-based or implementations that would improve the performance of TM’s existing copper infrastructures. Regardless of actual technologies that the company will choose to utilize, the newly appointed chief for unifi assures that they will be used to deploy high-speed Internet in more areas especially for those Streamyx customers that don’t have fiber access.

While the effort is indeed commendable, but we believe consumers certainly have to see the said technologies in action first in order to judge their capabilities. Not only that, there is also a question of costs as well, which is an important factor to consider for a lot of consumers out there.

Dear miloaisdino,

1. Regarding your ONCIS website (https://myhsbb.me/), for streamyx, if a port is stated as having 10Mbps maximum speed, do this means highest package possible is 8Mbps? Or there's actually a 10Mbps package? I know that they open the port cap/limit to ~10Mbps for some people on 8Mbps plan.

2. Also, is there any different between 10Mbps SUBB and 10Mbps Non-SUBB? Do SUBB means VDSL-capable (better upload) and Non-SUBB is ADSL-only (slow upload speed)?

3. I assume that "unifi lite" here means VDSL service, not the recently rebranded streamyx, right? Then that "Eligible for unifi lite (SUBB)" means that port is VDSL-capable?

4. What if the port is stated as "Eligible for unifi lite (SUBB)" but maximum speed specified as 4Mbps only, can it be upgraded to unifi lite (VDSL)? But the lowest unifi lite package is 10Mbps, isn't? My port has max speed of 4Mbps only, but is SUBB (IPMSAN_NGN), and the distance from my house to the cabinet is about 1.8km (I follow the wires).

Thanks & regards.

Hi,
1. highest possible package is currently 8mbps for quality and reliability assurance purposes. With the new unifi lite package migration, it will be the one and only package. If the site states 10mbps, your port limit should be 10240kbps allowing you to get 8-10mbps (depending on pppoe speed limit)

2. SUBB comes with true 10mbps dl, 5mbps ul and lower latency as is is on vdsl. 10mbps port speed on adsl only allows up to 8mbps package, and only 8mbps is guaranteed. I suspect this was done because 2mbps could be taken up by hypptv stb.

3. unifi lite (SUBB) means vdsl (subb means vdsl)

4. If there are no more vdsl ports available for subb service, you can only subscribe up to 4mbps streamyx package at adsl.

Thanks for your reply.

Anyway, I think those higher-than-actual-package speed cap/limit is to compensate (offset) the ADSL/ATM/network overhead. If they set the port limit exactly as the subscribed package (e.g. 4000Kbps for 4M; 8000Kbps for 8M), many people would complaint non-stop on why they don't get the subscribed speed (e.g. they got 3.xMbps on 4M, or 7.xMbps on 8M).

BTW, your ONCIS website (https://myhsbb.me/) no longer accessible if using TM's default DNS (or maybe since long time already, as I use third party DNS so I didn't realize). And, I cannot perform any address search on it, be it unifi or streamyx. Do they ™ changed something on their side?

Regards.

Your old price should stay the same; show this (or maybe even video from that #KhabarBaik event) to TM.

I advise you to jump ship to time. Im staying at condo, no fiber, just coppper only so max speed 50 mbps only at rm 199 a month, meanwhile time offer 500/500 mbps for 139 a month . Time coming this thurs to install.  Sad thing is i was loyal cust since 2002 when dial up only available.. bye tm net, wont be missed.

Shouldn't Unifi 50Mbps be RM99 (per month) instead of RM199?
