Hi all, anyone done upper endoscopy and mind to share the experience?

I have nausea / dizziness / hot flashes / heart palpitation symptoms.
Eat fast food or cakes confirm puke.

I went to SJMC to consult cardiologist and gastroenterologist.

I was scheduled to do TEE by cardiologist and Upper Endo by gastrologist doctors on the same day. (TEE is a 2D echo of my heart by inserted the transducer in my throat down to my chest area for more detail scans).

In the morning I did the TEE but it was really horrible experience. Only spray my mouth let my throat numb and inject sometime to keep me calm.
But I am fully awake and very panic that even lying on the bed waiting them to prep up, I keep gagging and butterflies in stomach.

Then I was pinned down by nurse and doctor shoved the probe into my mouth, ask me to swallow it and breath.
1st attempt I was unable to breath, so doctor pull it out and do it again.
2nd time success, I am able to breath, but keep on gagging like there is no tomorrow. Eye nose mouth also got fluid coming out.
worse part is doctor keep pulling out a bit, pushing in back a bit, and discuss with nurse over the screen for whole 10minutes. I keep gagging for those 10minutes and nurse pinned me on the bed.

I felted like I was raped and deep throated ... puke.gif

So immediately after that, I said I want to cancel the upper endoscopy. I feel my throat very pain and can taste blood.
The doc and nurse calm me down and say the upper endoscopy I will be sedated.

But at that time I already freaked out and very phobia that I reject the Endoscopy appointment no matter what they say.

So I would like to ask fellow lowyat, mind to share your endoscopy experience? By sedated does it mean fully sedated and put me to sleep? or partial sedation which I might still gag like hell? How thick is the scope cable going down my throat? (The TEE scope cable is really thick. About 10mm or more.)

SJMC will charge me around RM1500 for doing the upper endoscope. So I would like to get some advice first. I really don't wanna experience the horrible procedure again which I gag non stop. Very phobia.

Now I am on Pantoprazole + Gaviscon + Probiotic. And I keep myself away from fast food / cakes / oily food. So far so good, until last night I tried to eat a bit McDonalds GCB/fries/coke from my wife. Went back to home, 2 hours later vomit again. Burping and tremors, this morninig 6am burping again and unable to sleep. This morning breakfast unable to swallow, throat tightness.

had lower and upper endoscopy before. thanks to working graveyard shift at MAS engineering department (resign after surgery due to contract staff and that time they start to let go contract staff also). do it in klang general hospital.

had a problem in usus due to rupture in appendik together plus small kanser at upper section of usus. lower endoscope for usus and upper endoscope for cleaning the repository problem due to rupture (flooding heart and cleaning upper section of body). for most part i can say pretty bad for non stop gag from upper endo due to partial sedation but yet again, upper endo need you to be partial sedation or else gag/other side effect may cause unable to breath and doctor also need patient feedback during the procedue(which later will cause you to kaput terus masuk kubur if fully sedative base on doctor say to me before going for surgery). i remember gag feeling during the upper endo but unable to do anything due to sedative. after upper endo done, than fully sedative for lower endo procedure to start

the very worst part is after all sedative gone as puking green liquid every freaking time try to eat something (soft or hard food). lost about 15 KG from 1 week recovery and hospitalize. ask doctor, what the heck the green liquid is and he say it from bile after part that spleen rejected. after 1 week than everything when ok

yet again that my experience bro as recovery different from person to person. hope well soon (sorry for language mix up).. thumbup.gif

I had the same experience as you when they shoved the tube down my throat. The worse procedure ever and when they removed it, yellow juices were oozing from my mouth and I laid there face down as though I got tortured badly.

My first endoscopy, I was also sedated in Pantai bangsar. But I woke up while they had to scope down my throat and I fought for 2-3 secs before I passed out again lol.
I wonder why some will be sedated and others they're not

Upper endoscopy, i chose to stay awake. Suffered a mild panic in the beginning. Keep swallowing & keep relaxing but the gagging is almost automatic. My thoughts at that time was hopefully i wont be kidnapped by UFO & be probed like this 24/7, haha.

After the short procedure, feel a great sense of relief.

Hi, my friend plan to do an endoscopy as she is suffering from GERD and no sign of the medicines are working.

Wanna consult whether the doctor's skills in doing endoscopy will matter for you as a patient?

Will a doctor which is more gentle, patient and friendly would help a panic patient more calm when doing endoscopy?

Are there any doctors in klang valley that possess such good characteristics?

My friend is in fear of doing endoscopy after reading thjs thread. Please help 😣, thanks in advance!

Is your friend planning to do the endoscopy at a private hospital?

If yes, then your friend should inform the doctor that she wants to be sedated prior to the scope.

Or else she will also have a terrible experience.
