I get errors fighting gyms too. Most of the time when I try to fight a gym an error will come out when the pokemon comes out.

Faced similar problem. apparently it is due to weak GPS signal and drifting away from the gym.

Game frozed. Phone auto shutdown. When restarted my phone cant use the password to unlock. Phone wiped. There was a samsung update. Pokemongo got confused saying my device not compatible. After doing the reinstalling and all my client got restarted new. The client cant get back my progress even when linked to google account. Was as if i never played at all. Sighs. Collateral damage is all chat history for social platform all wiped as well.
