Hello all,

I have an i5 4440, looking to upgrade my processor into a better i5 or i7.
Planning to sell this + add RM500 to get a new processor.

Which processor can I get with this budget?
*
Assuming you are able to sell if off at RM 500, adding RM 500 on top of it will get you RM 1000 in total, this cannot get you anything beyond Haswell i5 yet, Xeon E3 1230 V3/1231 V3 is priced slightly higher than your available budget (though you may find one which meets your budget brows.gif ), while Haswell i7 is all > 1.2k unless you get those OEM/bulk units.

request for Budget mini atx case pc ( RM 3000 )
Case prefer: SilverStone Milo Series ML08 ( any one sell this? how much? )
GPU prefer: GTX 1060

other please suggest me!
*
Well it is quite hard TBH, only able to fit a 3GB version of GTX1060 with minor over budget.

Intel Core i5 6402P - RM 754
ASRock H110M-ITX - RM 278
Corsair 8GB DDR4 2133MHz Value RAM - RM 218
Zotac GTX1060 3GB GDDR5 Mini - RM 949
WD Blue 1TB HDD - RM 215
Silverstone SX500 500W - RM 412
Silverstone ML08B - RM 340

Total: RM 3166 (ETech price inclusive of GST)

** Not entirely sure of the 3.5" HDD is able to fit in the case or not but according to the specs sheet, it should be able to sit alongside with the chosen GPU (short card).

how bout rx460? which 1 is better?

btw im.not sure whether is the card dead or not. As i switch on the pc with dedicated card dvi will detect no signal... Although the fan & everything is moving.
If i boot with integrated display dvi then unplug & plug to dedicated dvi then it work fine.
*
RX460 is faster but GTX750Ti will do the job just fine if you are looking to save as much money as possible.

Try to reset CMOS and BIOS settings first, see if it is able to solve the mysterious GPU issue or not before getting a new GPU.

bro, how to reset cmos & bios
*
If your mobo comes with CMOS jumper then use it to reset, or just remove the CMOS battery for few seconds and put it back, search the Internet on how to do this if you don't understand.

Is i7 4790 a good upgrade?
*
i5 -> i7 grants you 4 extra threads (and slightly higher clock speed), but if your workload is low or doesn't benefit from the multithreaded CPU then it is hard to notice any performance difference.

i7 4790 is the highest end Haswell Refresh CPU already (for non-K) so the answer to your question is yes, it is considered as a good upgrade.

total budget for the upgrade is around rm1500.. do you think i should upgrade my processor too ?
*
No need to upgrade CPU/mobo if it is still functioning well, your CPU (Xeon E3 1230 V2) is basically an i7 3770 with no iGPU (doesn't matter since you are going to buy dedicated GPU anyway) and slightly lower clock speed (0.1 - 0.2GHz only), not worth upgrading it to an i7 3770.

GTX1060 6GB is your best pick now with your available budget, you don't have to change PSU too, just plug in the card and run (if everything goes well).

Thank You for your suggestion. Is it worth to wait for Kaby lake? Based on previous Intel cpu the raw performance gain isn't much right? Moreover with our ringgit dropping unsure.gif

Also any B150 mobo will do am I right?
*
Mostly 10% performance improvement based on the previous deployment history data.

Any H110/B150/H170/Z170 chipset mobo will be able to run the current Skylake and the upcoming Kaby Lake (via BIOS update) CPU.

Hey all. Does anyone know a reputable pc assembly shop (specifically for gaming rigs) near Putrajaya/ Bangi area?

The shop should be able to do full service of the rig (cleaning and cable management).
*
If Cyberjaya is still within your acceptable travel distance then you can consider Lucro PC.

Price will remain the same (very high chance) in US dollar, but due to the current situation of our currency, we might actually see a price hike soon, but they are not going to be released so soon (probably early next year), so just pray for a better forex rate in the upcoming months biggrin.gif

QUOTE(NLTR @ Nov 16 2016, 08:40 AM)
Hi, need some advices / idea from sifu here

Plan to upgrade my ancient computer (7 years) so that it could serve me for another 2-3 years, mainly used for internet surfing, downloading, light gaming and watch movie/drama.

Budget: 700-1k

Below are the specs:
PSU: Huntkey Green Star 450W
MOBO: MSI G31M3-L V2 (MS-7529)
Processor: Core 2 Duo E7500 @ 2.93GHz
GPU: NVidia Geforce 9500GT 512MB GDDR3 128Bit
1TB HDD
4GB DDR2 RAM
Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio
21.5 Inch Samsung Monitor (DVI)

Will a Core 2 Quad processor, new GPU or SSD improve the computer performance in gaming and watching 1080p video?

Sorry for my noob questions.
Any suggestion and advice is appreciated.
Thanks

I wish to play those games smoothly, not necessarily in 1080p:

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed

Final Fantasy X HD Remastered

Street Fighter IV and V (V not sure can run or not)

Dota 2

LOL

Diablo 3
Is NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 compatible with my current MOBO?
*
It is compatible but GTX560 is nowhere to be found now (unless used unit), same goes to Core 2 Quad.

A complete overhaul will require a larger amount of budget, so try to search for used Core 2 Quad CPU, should be around RM 150 (depends on which variant and version you found), then the rest of the budget can be used to get a 120GB SSD (for OS and a more responsive system) and new GPU.

Something like this will do:
1. Used Core 2 Quad (~ RM 150)
2. 120GB SSD (~ RM 200)
3. GTX750Ti (example, ~ RM 500)

Add another 4GB RAM if needed (recommended, 4GB is barely enough nowadays with Chrome and Firefox being a memory hogger sweat.gif )

I see. Can I add another 4GB RAM to my MOBO? If not mistaken, my MOBO can support maximum only 4GB.

I had a check at Etech Lelong page:

GIGABYTE GEFORCE GTX 750TI OC 1GB GDDR5 128BIT (N75TOC-1GI) - RM472
PALIT GEFORCE GTX 1050 STORMX 2GB GDDR5 128BIT - RM579

Is 450W enough to power them? Thanks laugh.gif
*
Oops, sorry, I overlooked the specs, 4GB seems to be the maximum supported memory size sweat.gif

Yes your current 450W PSU is able to power them up, GTX1050 seems more worth in this case biggrin.gif

If you need SSD, then you can swap the GPU with GTX750Ti and use the money to get a entry level 120GB SSD.

QUOTE(LuRu @ Nov 16 2016, 10:15 PM)
Hi to all sifus!

Recently been thinking of upgrading my GPU and getting a 144hz monitor as well.
So I was thinking that I might as well get a Free sync monitor to boot because G-Sync is.. erm.. expensive  sad.gif

Budget : 2.0 - 2.5k (for both card + monitor)

Current Rig :

Asrock H97M Pro 4
i5 4440
Corsair, 8gb ram
1TB HDD
240 GB Intel 530
GTX 750 Ti
FSP 550W PSU
Cooler Master K380

So I was thinking that I should get an RX 480 and perhaps AOC 24” G2460PF from E-Tech?
Or should I get a different card?
What about G-Sync? Is it really the bomb and I should just suck it and pay more for it?

Thanks in advance!
*
They both are having similar purposes which is to reduce input lag, smooth out the gameplay etc but GSync is expensive due to "proprietary" technology status.

If you want to fit both requirements in your budget then AMD is the only way to go.

QUOTE(IceXenz @ Nov 16 2016, 11:46 PM)
Hey guys, been lurking around this forum for a while and would appreciate some feedback on this build. Mainly going to use it for gaming, 2d art, torrenting & surfing the net)

(CPU) Intel Core i5 6500
(mobo) Gigabyte B150M
(HDD) WD Blue 1TB
(SDD) Kingston SSDNow UV400 240SSD
(PSU) Superflower Leadex Gold 550W
(RAM) ?
(GPU) ?
(Chassis) ?

I haven't exactly included a budget ballpark figure as I don't really know how much I ought to be targeting and as you might've guessed, I'm still undecided about the last three. Also, since this is my very first time attempting to build a PC, I have a few questions that hopefully somebody could help me out with:

1. will I need any additional components to connect to my home wifi?

2. just wondering how it will compare to a laptop? i'm using an i7 16gb dell xps 13. haven't really played around with many desktops so i'm curious.

3. i've been reading up that i'll probably only need a screwdriver and some thermal paste to build the PC. am i missing out anything crucial?

4. the area i live in is quite prone to lightning. would it be advisable for me to get some power surge plug for the PC?

5. i'll be in and out of the country intermittently and the PC might not be switched on for 2 months at a time. would this potentially slow down/ spoil it?

6. is it worth it even building with these stats or would it be more economical for me to buy a premade PC?

7. okay, last question. would it make sense if i opted for a Dell U2515H or U2715H monitor? i have this idea of using the monitor interchangeably for this PC and as a second screen for my laptop (depending on which one i'm using at the moment). is it even feasible for me to use a monitor like this?

Sorry if some of these questions are in the wrong thread (I hope they aren't!), I'd appreciate tons if somebody pointed me in the right directions, and of course, many thanks for even reading through this post!
*
1. Yes, you need either PCIe WiFi adapter or USB WiFi adapter to connect to your own WiFi AP.

2. Well, many benefits by going for desktop path. Better specs, upgrade room, aesthetic, fancy accessories etc rclxm9.gif
If you are a gamer and want to have the best level of gaming graphics details and high frame rate then desktop grade GPU is the only way to go at much affordable price (10 series GPU on laptop is a good idea overall but the price is a let down for almost every gamer, GTX1060 on laptop will cost at least 6k and you can already get GTX1080 with this amount of money).

3. Screwdriver (yes), thermal paste (not really needed as the new CPU does come with thermal paste pre-applied unless you plan to use 3rd party thermal paste).

4. If you don't mind spending your cash for it then it would be a good addition/protection to your hardware biggrin.gif

5. No, just don't install water cooler in your rig for potential liquid leak, but bear in mind you will get huge amount of Windows Update after you leave your rig unattended for over a very long period of time which may slow down the performance of the PC when they are being installed into your PC (unless you disable Windows Update and other background/software updates etc but not recommended).

6. Prebuilt OEM PC is just a rip-off, the specs are nowhere close with a custom build PC shakehead.gif

7. Dell UltraSharp monitors are really eye candy especially the thin bezel and good color calibration/reproduction, I am an UltraSharp user as well for quite a few years already and I love it very much, look for U2717D instead of U2715H, it is a new model with a better design overall.

Well you cannot compare a PC monitor with TV though, they are aiming at different customers, resolution is not the only thing that matters.

Not everyone is looking to browse FB/Lowyat Forum on a 42" TV, it is just too big and uncomfortable to me, and 4K is an insane resolution to drive even with GTX1080/Titan Pascal tongue.gif

Awesome! Thank you so much for replying. Aha, think I'll have to work my way up to "fancy" accessories since everything is really expensive lately.  rclxub.gif

Anyway, think I've decided on the components. What do you think?
(CPU) Intel Core i5 6500
(mobo) Gigabyte B150M
(HDD) WD Blue 1TB
(SDD) Kingston SSDNow UV400 240SSD
(PSU) Superflower Leadex Gold 550W
(RAM) Kingston 8GB
(GPU) MSI GTX1060
(Chassis) Tecware

I'm not sure if I ought to get 16GB RAM since I'm one of those who ends up with 60 browser tabs without realising, with multiple apps open. Not sure if its worth it. Maybe I should just kick the habit instead and learn minimalism lol.

Also, slightly confused by all the different brands. Are there any benefits to sticking with a particular brand for parts or can I just get the cheapest around (e.g. Kingston vs MSI vs Gigabyte)?

Help much appreciated (seriously, thanks again man!!)
*
QUOTE(IceXenz @ Nov 17 2016, 11:00 AM)
Ah ic, would there be any particular brand in the market now you'd recommend instead? if it's 27 inches but cheaper :S
I'm mainly looking for something that's more accurate colourwise because I'm planning to use it for art and some minor photo editing. Doesn't matter as much with gaming.
*
Go for 16GB RAM in this case, but due to our weak RM currency and stock shortage, DDR4 RAM price has gone up hill, up to 50% increment in the past few weeks doh.gif

Brand doesn't matter as they can work with communicate with each other without any issue, if you are looking to save as much money as possible, just grab the cheapest one.

Stick with Dell UltraSharp if you are going for photo editing which requires accurate color calibration, BenQ also comes out with few 99% sRGB professional CAD/Adobe Suite monitors but quite pricey too.

Well that one isnt a gsync monitor right? What is the cheapest gsync monitor thats available in malaysia? Do aoc G2460PG and acer XB240HA available here?

Both monitors listed by me aren't GSync ready, the two you listed above are also not available in Malaysia either.

The cheapest GSync monitor here is Acer Predator XB241H (around 1.9k), it doesn't worth the money anymore after Dell S2417DG entered our market at almost similar price tag (around 2k) but with a higher resolution (1440p instead of 1080p).
