I've decided to take it slow and go 50km for janda baik ultra and end the year with 70km malaysia ultra trail festival.

If I survive that then can consider 100km for next year lol.

some questions..

- is there a lot of difference between running say, 42km on road vs trail?
- MUTF got tons of mandatory items including things like first aid kit, emergency blankets, reflective vest, headlamps etc. do all of them really really really need to be brought and is enforced tightly? or is it more of a guideline if ur seriously contending for the top placement and a miss here and there is okay if ur not really competitive despite the warning?
- also do you lug all of the stuff along the race?

aaaah great advices thanks sifus!

@silvadesk

- so for some items like reflective vest no need to follow bulat2? as long as have decent reflective equipments can be accepted?

- ah i see. basically safety-wise need to prepare just like when you go for long hikes. im guessing unlike regular runs most part of the route would be unmanned and unmarked so theres higher chance to stray off the route.

- im very interested to have training session with you guys but probably not this weekend. my legs got injured recently and need to let it recover until mid next week. can we have it next weekend instead?

also i dont even have trail shoes yet. i'll try to at least get those by the next week. im pretty lacking in equipments but i plan to acquire them slowly within these few months. same can be said with my training as well laugh.gif

@chester
- i like how that sound. these days my speed is kinda lacking but im pretty confident about my stamina. that's what got me interested in ultras in the first place because the expected pace and cut off time are considerably lower compared to HM/FM standard.

and it kinda combine 2 of my fav activities which is hiking and running so im kinda excited to give it a try despite how scary it sounds lol.

anyone here going for mutf? it's the first time it's organized issit? some of my friends is a bit doubtful forking almost rm300 for it.

Bro those are awesome goals! Wish I can try trail events someday too. But I think need lots of training wan. Someone told me that in order to do 10km trail for instance, u must first be able to do 20km road. And for 20km trail, u must have at least a road marathon under your belt.
*
So in order to do 70km trail need to do 150km road first DX

I really wish we have more road ultra races but i think it wouldn't be good for the knees

No la bro, I think the advice only apply to low mileage. Once u hit certain capabilities anything goes.

Anyway it's Saturday. Have a great training day everyone! I'm going for a 2 hour LSD today. What is everyone's training plan for the day

I'm stil out of commission so i went shopping instead

Decided to get this kalenji trail shoes for 119. It's a bit stiff but not that much different compared to their pricier offerings. Guess im too used to soft sole minimalist shoes. Need to readjust back to cushioning ones

Looks great. Will you be using this for your ultras?
*
Not sure. I don't have good experience with stiff shoes with lots of cushioning. Hard to wiggle around and easier to get cramps. I'm gonna give it some test runs but will probably start saving to get a pair of VFF for the ultra.

Anyone here do trail runs with minimalist shoes? Is running lab still the only place to get VFF in malaysia? Any other recommended brands similar to VFF?

*Im using endomondo btw

VFF is what liau? For trails I'm using hoka challenger atr 3. And I must say it's very good if cushioning is what u r looking for.
*
Vibrams five fingers. Those weird looking toed shoes. I've been wanting them since forever.

I actually prefer less cushioning, more flexible and lighter shoes so asking around if anyone have good suggestions for minimalist trail shoes.

Nowadays minimalist macam out dated di, hardly any brands come out with minimalist models. NB used to have the minimus. I've got the road version. But they don't produce them anymore I think.

Hybrid shoes not good enough for some of our local trail events?
*
Yeah i think they started going downhill since vibrams lose that lawsuit. I grabbed brooks pure connect shoes couple of years ago and it's been my main running shoes since then.

I guess brooks puregrit would make an ok alternative to VFF if can't find em here.

oo i forgot got stanchart next week. u joining?

QUOTE(SlomoX @ Apr 2 2018, 10:38 AM)
no la, more or less on endurance, which basically if youre talking about 10km distance, trail might take twice the time as compared to normal road race depending on elevation/weather/trail condition.

kudos to you my fren for doing ultra trail.

i dont have the strength to do such feat.
*
aah. i see. haha i oso dunno how i will fare. uncharted territory for me but i like to give it a try. sweat.gif

QUOTE(cHaRsIeWpAu^^ @ Apr 2 2018, 10:41 AM)
42km on road not much hill hence trail races are generally harder.

all ultra run requires mandatory items, unless its a loop-race ultra, eg. bukit cinta ultra, um24, 24h, back to endurance, watergate 16h.
dont ignore it because organizer have the rights to disqualify you if they catch you not carrying those items.
some good organizers will sell those mandatory items when you're collecting bibs/mandatory items checking.

rules are meant to be followed, dont challenge the race rules because you dont wanna get disappointed because you're disqualified by organizer.

yes you need to bring all the stuffs along the race, thats why you need to buy a hydration pack/running vest. usually they're not cheap, a UD running vest usually costs around rm400.
*
understood. thanks! aah good to know they will sell some of those during checking.

not all race organizer selling, dont get perception of "go there only buy".

few races i anticipated last year didn't sell, eg. melaka ultra.
*
i'll keep that in mind. yeah wont go there unprepared. more towards thinking about things that might not be explicitly stated but can serve the same purpose like reflective tape vs reflective vest. if they insist to follow to the t then it'd help if they have them around.

2x 3km. not a lot of trail mostly road. the second run hurts less than the first. i think it's just because my foot arc.
