I believe the main objective of /Spoiler is to hide things so that people only access to them if they 'choose' to do so. Thats why its called a spoiler.... ya know, kinda like movie spoiler?

Sometimes, people also use spoiler like what you did. To hide one LOOoooOOOooONG article so that the post doesn't reach all the way to the bottom.

The first ever purpose of a spoiler tag was to hide the endings of particularly suspenseful/twisted-ending movies. Like most of M. Night Shymalan's movies. But over the years it has morphed into saving scrolling space, hiding sarcastic remarks and generally making a post look somewhat neater.

I think some of the Admin/Staff can explain better. thumbup.gif Thought I'd give it a shot.

for example in music and movie section

some one might has already watch a movie and want to talk about it, but some might have not watch it and do not want to know the story line from others, so spoiler can be use

those who want to know the movie story line or talk about the movie story line can click open the spoiler to see it, those that do not want to know no need to click them

smile.gif

by the way, like the movie The Guardian has two ending

QUOTE
A published piece of information that divulges a surprise, such as a plot twist in a movie.
taken from the 5th meaning of the second interpretation found here

i believe the origin was also for quite similar purpose in those movie threads smile.gif
so to not spoil others who have not watched the movie yet, it will be hidden unless the reader would want to know

It would seem that the only forum so far I've encountered using the spoiler drop-down feature to hide long posts/pics is LYN, of course being convenient and helpful in obvious ways.

But the true meaning of spoilers has been mentioned above. In an unnamed forum, we used to just do it like this for the past 8 years(board is coded from scratch, no IPB or whatever)

*spoiler*
-space like few lines

=P.
