wow gooding. unlucky me, everyone is wearing formal at my office, so need to stick with the boring dress watch everyday.

I thought formal would mean the dress/pants only? Didn't know it even includes watches?

For watches that do not use battery, once the reserve power is depleted, the watch will stop. Is this correct?

Yes.

Manual wind watches = have to wind the crown. Dont overwind. Then wind again when the watch stops.

Automatics = have to wind the crown. Shouldnt have problems with over winding because there is a release that will prevent overwinding. Then wear it daily so that the movement of your arm provides energy for the watch to keep going.
*
A bit confused here. Automatic yet still have to manually wind the crown? So which part of it is automatic? And in what sense then, does it differ to manual?

Automatic means you have a rotor that will wind it as you move about, thus eliminating the need to manually wind the watch. But, you still can manually win an automatic watch but not vice versa. I guess he missed out the "don't" part.

oh! not a problem, my question was no0b as well tongue.gif
So the way automatic works is that, the energy gained by moving around is transferred to the watch (is it kinetic?), hence no need to manually wind an automatic watch.

If I may ask then, once the reserve power is drained - would winding the crown makes the watch return to current timing, or have to set it manually?

yes, kinetic energy turns into potential energy (the energy stored in the spring)
But some of us have more than 1 automatic watch, so when one watch is stored in the box, eventually the watch will stop. and you'll have it wind it to bring it to life again.

have to set the time manually.
so far have not encountered an automatic watch that would return to the correct time.
you might need a quartz radio watch for this.

Tks much! But other than the aesthetics, what drives people to get manual/automatic watch, rather than quartz??

Boggles the mind that one requires ANOTHER watch to set the 'dead' watch back to life. Isn't showing time the reason one wears a watch? And life being busy as is, wonder how one find the time (no pun intended) to re-set watches?

So technically, automatic vs mechanical is that mechanical watches require winding, whereas automatic no need?

As far as collecting watch, do you buy into this idea of "Limited Editions" ? Just a hype, or is good investment prospects ?

Buy what you like, not because of FOMO.

Watches, for the most parts, are pretty poor investments.

The ones which make good investments, most can’t afford/access.

True also. But getting annoyed with watchmakers going on this "Limited Editions" hype, more so with having an exact copies of the same design, but one with this limited claims. Hope it is just a fad and watchmakers understand that making their products appear scarce is just dodgy.
