I've yet to see them in the flesh, but I will say that I prefer it without the compass (as this cannot be "locked" in place on the Alpinist), but I also believe at 38mm will be a little small for my wrist. I'm a big size fella, so that 1mm difference does make some difference. That said, I've never had a problem with the 'X' on dial and the lack of magnification on the date window is actually a very positive thing.
And my goodness, the new dial colours are amazing. Seiko are really masterful with creating depth on their dials.
I know I shouldn't explore (although I was very close to pulling the trigger), and now that I have the SPB199J1 in hand, won't have to.
i m attracted to the 38mm size. clean dial w/out compass & 2nd crown. the baby alpinist is whole new watch now. the fume-dial is good workmanship. And my goodness, the new dial colours are amazing. Seiko are really masterful with creating depth on their dials.

the only deal-breaker is the printed numeral. if it had the applied numeral, i guess is a real winner.
Having said so, the printed numeral doesnt lume too, sigh.
