Japanese excel in racing simulation, aircraft/spaceshooter, RPG and arcade actions. Westerners on the other hand excel in first person shooters like Fear, FarCry, etc and Real Time strategy games

QUOTE(Thrust @ Jan 21 2007, 02:49 PM) Japanese excel in racing simulation, aircraft/spaceshooter, RPG and arcade actions. You forgot about the creative/humorous shit they manage to produce from time to time. Katamari, God Hand, Ouendan, Trauma Center, Okami, etc.

QUOTE(Thrust @ Jan 21 2007, 02:49 PM) Japanese excel in racing simulation, aircraft/spaceshooter, RPG and arcade actions. Westerners on the other hand excel in first person shooters like Fear, FarCry, etc and Real Time strategy games ditto. japanese made RPGs are better than their western counterparts. as for FPS games, its the opposite. and their CGs and FMVs are also a lot better than western games (excluding blizzard's). i must say each has their own specialty. I guess it depends on the market as well. It's not like western studios cannot make good RPG games or eastern studios cannot make great FPS but the market that determine it.
US people prefer FPS and sports titles so the demand for these type of games is high. So game studio like EA allocate their resource to make these type of game. The same thing occurs in Japan. in the end each studio speacialize in diffrent type of games

I dunno... too generalized BTW. I hardly get excited about Japanese anime-based games- all the pretense is there for who? Mad otakus who cosplay every 2 days and are crazy about every detail of characters? (Plus, we all know metro men and butch women go on perfect. ) There are more simulators (IL82, FSX, GTR, FM2, Virtual Skipper) that aren't from Japan then the ones that are BTW. Unto the topic of FMVs, most people obviously didn't play Myst IV. That blows away every goddamn FMV that any Japanese developer ever made.

western create technologies in gaming (game engine/physics), while japan more focus on artistic (more to anime style art direction) i dun agree on 'Japanese excel in racing simulation', ie. Forza physics is far better then GT4 and there's a bunch of western racing sims out there. QUOTE(Goliath764 @ Jan 28 2007, 01:02 PM) western games' are more brutal, mature, not-so-handsome. Playing a game that lets you controll a character that runs around killing shit with guns doesn't make it any more mature than, say, playing an Italian plumber who runs around stomping giant mutated turtles and punching bricks that float around the air.

Japanese make better 2d games than the americans or the westerners .. theres no doubt about it that street fighter was the turning point for 2d fighting games and thus comes all the great street fighter games such as sf3 3rd strike, Kof games and a hell a lot of great 2d . japanese also good in making great 2d action such as Metal Slug series, shoot n umps games ( Raiden fighters, Espgaluda, Ikaruga ) .. and also the facial 3d ness that japanese make is so good and better than the westerners ( example the facial face of characters in final fantasy, resident evil series, silent hill series, tecmo fatal frame , ninja gaiden ) .. so in conclusion i love japanese games than the westerners/americans game ......
