*Gunpla*
1. You are targeting a niche in an already niche plastic models market.
2. Only 1 official distributor in Malaysia: Litt Tak
3. Consider diversifying into other toys and hobbies merchandise as well.
4. Be part of the community like how some shops became a hub for plamo lovers to gather and build their Gunpla.
5. Look into Price, Service and Social Engagement.
6. Profit margin is low. Engaging in a price war hurts both you and your competitors.

Also to add:
1) Hobby shops are already a small niche market. If you solely focus on Gunpla, you will be stuck with a very very small client base.
2) Initial investment is not cheap, builders will always go for RG and MG products.
3) Your competitors have P-Bandai offerings, how are you going to obtain and sell Premium Bandai kits that are Japan exclusive?
4) Not only you need to stock up on Gunpla, you also need to stock up on paints, airbrushes, glues, props.
5) In the event of sole distributor, most likely they will impose a price floor to prevent a price war. So at most you can only rely on service and other aspects.
6) You need to manage your logistics and inventory level.
7) There are other suppliers, but most likely are grey imports.
8) Yes, Gunplas are expensive because shipping, distribution, warehousing, retail rental, salaries and import duty etc. You cannot just look at the difference between Malaysia and Japan price. Bringing the item from Japan to our shops will incur costs and these costs are not cheap to begin with.

Yesterday I just sent something to a newly open shop at Summit. They sell Gunpla & other collectible like Lego, etc.
According to the partner, the start up cost for his shop is about RM 240k, RM 60k for renovation & a part part of it for inventory.

At the mean time, my cousin dump her ex many years ago because he can't make a real living by just selling gunpla online. Reality is cruel.

1. P-Bandai is short for Premium Bandai. Japan exclusive limited edition models. You need to have connections from the Japan side to get the items here.
2. If your supplier is the official distributor and you do not follow their floor price, they have the right to NOT supply to you anymore. Price floor is there to prevent price wars. If all retailers can suka suka lower their price and cut their profits, it would make the business prospect more unattractive. Who wants to be in a business where they cannot earn money? It would hurt the entire market in the process. Retailers die = distributor die = market die.

if u read what the others posted here, basically u need to do a few things before u even start a shop

1) create your niche in the market. what makes you stand out over others? what will make fans drive a long distance just to go to your shop and not the ones nearby their house.
2) once u have created a niche, you need to make a name for yourself. where else to do this? youtube/facebook/etc basically show to the world why u r different. it is free also.
3) when you have enough followers/support or make yourself know enough, then you can think about a business. when you are famous, ppl will come.

No...I bought most of my stuff from HLJ..they always offer good and discounted prices. Use to buy from XL Shop but found out that buying from HLJ, Hobbysearch and Robot Kingdom is way more cheaper..if you opt the normal shipping.

Start something new like some 3rd party companies are doing for Transformers...like upgrade parts, dioramas etc. There's a huge market in the US for action figures some even being crowdfunded...and not many companies are doing does sort of stuff.

Best is don't open physical shop but do online.

Physical shop incur more cost and gundam profit not much only.

Too many ppl selling d.

I think bootleg got more profit? Price 50% of original, which is already expensive imho

These sort of businesses are usually a labor of love for small start-ups. I cannot imagine that you will turn a profit quickly, you require investment and tenacity to absorb losses for some time. Even then, you might feel it's not worth it business-wise.

Nope.. Just because it's your hobby and interest doesn't mean it can sell well here.. Alternatively, most of my friends bought directly from Taobao; cheaper and looks even more badass than the original series.. The quality given is onpar..
