Full Unifi solution very tempting but too expensive for me!

I guess I'll have to find cheaper acceptable solution for traffic history & DPI eg Edgerouter + UNMS, or ntopng on Raspberry Pi 3 / Celeron box.

This sounds very effective. Works and affordable. Love to see some forumers here post pictures of their setup. Just like how they do in ubiquiti stories in their community page. Maybe we could do something similar.

Guys,

Need a favor. I have an USG connected to a POE switch & a cloud key. I try multiple times to get it to work but didnt happen.

On the setup page, choose dhcp also doesnt work, pppoe also doesnt work.

Anybody can point me to the right direction? My data is bad at home so unable to scroll thru all prev pages here to study.

I did read this earlier yesterday but unfortunately during the setup page only show this page:

So tried DHCP - Nada
Tried PPPOE - No option for VLAN tagging.

Hence the headace. Apologize - Newb in networking.
Appreciate the video bro, I'm gonna try this out next week as I can't configure the network on Thursday - Saturday.

------

Another question, since all the AP's is installed on the ceiling, & on the switch I saw it shows as "AP managed by others" - Is there any way that I can adopt it directly via GUI? Or do I need to reset it first?

Thanks thanks thanks
*
It only shows that page posibbly because u need the latest firmware before starting the setup. Good luck.

sorry bro hijack a bit. i'm having the exact same issue, but after doing the steps shown in the video, can see from the controller, that the USG has already a WAN IP, but i am still unable to access the internet.. my pc is connected to the LAN 1 port on USG.

Reset your usg to factory default. Set up again by accessing 192.168.1.1 through yr web browser. It will say yr connection is not private, click advanced and continue. U will see unifi page now and click on configuration tab on the bottom left of the page. U will see similar page like in the video and fill up your pppoe details again with the vlan tag. Then later adopt the unifi to yr controller. It should work this time.

Thank you.

edit: ignore the cabling mess, test setup only, will move into a proper setup later  tongue.gif

edit 2: oh and to add on to wanttotree's guide, if your browser has an error connecting to USG default gateway (in my case the error was: ERR_SSL_VERSION_OR_CIPHER_MISMATCH), disable / turn off your antivirus, i'm using bitdefender and it worked once i turned off the online threat prevention thingy. hope this helps  :thumbsup:

Hi,

  Just want to ask.
  To cover a long rectangle area, 1 AC-Lite at about 25% (centre of front side) & 1 at 75% (centre of back side), or just put 1 AC-Pro at the centre ?
  Because currently the price of 1 AC-Pro is about same as 2 x AC-Lite.
  AC-Lite got 2x2 for both 2.4G & 5G, total 1167Mbps
  AC-Pro got 3x3 for both 2.4G & 5G, total 1750Mbps
  Sounds like 2 x AP-Lite is better than 1 AC-Pro.

  Thanks!

Note: It is a office area, so devices number at front / back site could be not big different. (not easy to measure)

2 uap ac lites is wayyy better.

Yup was using the Gen 1 ... latest firmware and kept crashing so decided to give up and moved to NAS.

Can’t really return it either as bought on Amazon , shipping it back wouldn’t be worth the hassle

Mine always stopped working after 1-2-3 days

No idea, it’s possible.

Anyway if I knew setting it up on NAS was so easy I probably wouldn’t have bothered buying a CloudKey anyway , considering that the NAS is running all day anyway.

I understand one straight forward way to setup VOIP on ubiquiti (I am using MAXIS Fibrenet ) is via the the VOIP port on the USG.

With the MAXIS router (TP-Link AC1200 C5v),  I just connect the old fashion analog phone cable (with RJ11 connectors ?)  directly into the TP-Link router.  (I then have the old analog phone with extensions to 2 other phones around the house).  So my question is what device/adaptor do I need that connects to the USG VOIP Port that will provide analog RJ11 ports ?   (I prefer not to have to  buy IP phones and retire my analog phone infrastructure)

What are my options ?   Thanks

NOTE.  I don't need a PABX system.  I just want to be able to use my existing old fashion analog phones.
*
There is no other options other than getting a smart switch in between your fibre modem and routers.

Eg;
Fibre ---> smart switch ---> tag vlan 621 & 822 --> tplink --> phone
........................................\
..........................................--> tag vlan 621 --> USG

Yes, u need to tag both vlan 621 and 822 to make voip work on maxis homeline phone. Last year i only need to tag 822 and it works perfectly. But suddenly it needed 621 together to work. Weird but thats the only workaround i can find so far.

@wanttotree,  I am trying to get my head around your use of the words  “smart switch”.  Is this like an ATA ? (I been reading abt FXO/FXS etc and just trying to work out the exact piece of hw I need to get to do this. Can you help with some examples of devices ?  For example , will something like this do what I want?

user posted image
*
Unfortunately that device (voip phone adapter) wont work on maxis home fibre. Smart switch is something like mikrotik rb260gs or tp-link tl-sg105e. This switch enable u to segment the vlan so both your usg and tp-link connected to the internet and the tp-link to work with the analogue phone.

Most people dont do this because lack of importance for voip on home use, for me i use it because of the free calls. If u r not familiar with this setup, dont hesitate to contact me personally via pm. My previous message has a simple text schematic of the setup. But being limited to text on forum box, it might not be too clear compared to image based schematic.

Basically,

1) your fibre cable fibre will connect to one of the smart switch port. Eg : port 1

2) your usg will connect to one of the port on smart switch. Eg : port 2 connected to usg WAN port.

3) your maxis tp-link router will connect to one of the port on the smart switch. Eg : port 3 connected to tp-link router WAN port.

4) u will configure the smart switch to;
i) tag vlan 621 to port 1, port 2 and port 3
ii) tag vlan 822 to port 1 and port 3

Now you are using two routers to go online, usg to handle your internet traffic, then your existing tp-link router to handle the analogue voip. It works perfectly for almost 2 years now.

Thanks @pandera999, @wanttotree.

OK, I think I understand what I need to do.  @wanttotree, Is my latest attached diagram here correct?

From @wanttotree's description,  I understand both routers (ie, the USG and the TP-Link AC1200) will need to establish their own PPPoE connection to MAXIS.

QUESTION:  Does Maxis allow 2 simultaneous PPPoE logins from the same account ?
*
That schematic is spot on! And yes multiple pppoe connections are allowed, as long as its the same exact account. It will be capped to yr subbed speed if ur wondering(lol). Good luck. Cheers.

if your router can handle vlans, would it be right to say you don't need a smart switch? even a dumb switch can be used as all vlan can be forwarded to maxis router and usg

It would be nice and interesting to hear your setup recommendation instead. =)

@gaara92  @quasi @wanttotree

I have read that there are no formal specifications for the behaviour of "unmanaged L2 switches that are VLAN un-aware" when they encounter tagged VLAN frames.  Apparently some switches will just drop them whilst others will faithfully pass them along. (I guess others could just collide and keep trying ?)

OK ...curiousity got the better of me and I just tried the following setup to see if this particular L2 switch I happen to have (D-LINK DGS-1008MP) will just "pass thru'" the tagged frames or drop them.

As per diagram (sorry... rough quick draw) , I connected my wired PC to the ER-X and my iPhone to the WIFI on the TP-Link AC1200.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Test 1:  with both the USG and the TP-Link AC1200 Routers ON

Ran Maxis Speed test on my wired PC (5 times) ....averaged about 91Mbps Download Speed
I have tried ringing the analog phone whilst the test I running too. Phone seem to work ok.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Test 2:  with the USG powered ON and the TP-Link AC1200 OFF

Ran Maxis Speed test on my wired PC (5 times) ....averaged about 94Mbps Download Speed
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Test 3: with both the USG and the TP-Link AC1200 Routers ON

Ran 2 you-tube videos on my PC and 1 you-tube video on my iPhone 6.
Ran all 3 videos streaming for about 30 minutes, no gliches.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Not an exhaustive test I know, but it does look like a viable setup if one already has a spare L2 switch
and do not wish to spend more for a smart switch.  (For my setup, I am buying a TL-SG105e cos I
want my setup to be VLAN aware and cannot afford to depend on an L2 switch that happen to be well behaved).
*
Thanx for this experiment, i now learned that l2 switch can pass over tagged vlan. Maybe useful sooner or later. Cheers.

Thank you for the suggestion.
Which mikrotik would you recommend?
Checkout sublime lazada page and there are too many models, cant even tell whats the difference.
Im mainly using for home usage but need to use conference call regularly, ie: skype.

I think the new hex will handle it no sweat. Its mikrotik, even their sub 1ghz single core can handle gigabit easy.

Thats hex s, which comes with sfp port if u need one. Theres one called hex(also known as rb750gr3) and it has the same exact internal without sfp port. And also its a boring white. Ultimately its the same thing but cheaper without the sfp port. Hex is arnd rm30-rm40 cheaper than hex s. So basically its your call. Cheers
