Hello guys, since last gen maxwell gpu 900 series price drop like crazy, thinking to upgrade my gtx970 to a gtx980 ti for only as low as Rm1689, but at the same time contemplating to join the intel camp by upgrading to i5 6600k + decent lga 1151 mobo. You can find my current specs in my sig.
Please help me decide..

Thanks

I would rather top up and get a less well known brand GTX1070.

Palit Geforce GTX1070 in here is about RM1,850.

Agreed. Also, GTX 980ti will sufficiently drive games in 1080p

mattsynyster I did a quick look around in the net. Looks like even compared to i5 3470 with older gen GPUs, your CPU is off by up to 12-15 fps in some games.

Your GTX 970 is still a good card, but I think your CPU is holding it back. If you get GTX 980Ti or even GTX 1070, your CPU will still hold it back. If game at 1080P, I suggest you change your CPU and mobo first. Good that if you can get the i5-6600K, it will serve you well for many years to come.

Later can upgrade GPU. Just my 2 cents

And how much your CPU goes against i5-6600K using GTX 980 Ti

yea i'd recommend getting skylake if you can. 970 still good enough since you have it, can upgrade to 1070 and skip 980ti.

If you can't wait, get the cheapest 980ti. If you can wait, wait for Intel Kabylake CPU.

Thanks for all the suggestion thumbup.gif rclxms.gif

But I've decided to upgrade my CPU

So this is what i end up with

Attached Image

Core i5-6600k + Asus Z170 P-D3

I am happy with this upgrade because I noticed significant improvement in gaming over my fx8350
I'am getting stable fps and even more in benchmarks and games like gta5, csgo, bf4 witcher
Even in fallout 4, in areas where usually i experience fps drop but not the case with this setup it is baby butt smooth
Couldn't be happier ditching the red camp biggrin.gif

Congrats for the new CPU and Mobo. Now only your GTX 970 working at its full potential. If you're tight on budget, save a bit more, wait a for few months and get a second GTX 970 for cheap. Those games you play scales pretty well with SLI. I know coz just a month ago, I was using GTX 970 SLI too. BF4 ultra 1440P above 60 fps

My own screenshot of BF4 with GTX 970 SLI. And that with old 32nm Sandy Bridge Xeon CPU. With Skylake, even better.

go google and you will see gaming is usually gpu dependent. there are many systems running sky lake with gtx 1080 & doing awesome benchmarks. just a handful of games are very demanding on the cpu, even if yr cpu bottleneck yr 980ti it will be MUCH smoother compared to if you upgrade the cpu. thx

DDR3 board, reduce the cost a lot but you lose out on performance ............ BUT it's not always the case.

Gaming-wise you won't feel the difference but for processor intensive work you might, case by case on that too.

Neither, go for AMD RX480, the value monster!
Nvidia has been ripping off people for ages, if you are not a fanboi of a particular brand then if for no other reason get amd to help the competition.

In the future if you need more horsepower (4k) you could easily drop in a second one for crossfire

CPU prices should also drop later in the year once zen is out..

yes. adding up a 8gb ddr4 stick will add me around 160+, that budget of mine is pretty tight

I use this rig primarily for gaming, anyway happy with the performance over previous fx8350
