Mazda 3 Impressions

Went for a test drive of the Mazda 3 2.0 today. Also went for a ride in the CX-5.

According to salesperson, Mazda 3 sedan is stable up to 150 km/h whereas the CX-5 is stable up to 120 km/h due to its increased height and weight.

Some thoughts on the Mazda 3:
- car feels a little heavy. So acceleration is a bit more sluggish and not as snappy compared to my Vios.
- Car feels rather wide too. May not be able to squeeze through narrow lanes compared to the Vios. Measurements wise, the Mazda 3 is 9.5cm wider than the Vios. For occassions where the lane is narrow, and you just need that extra space to squeeze through, this may make a difference.
- I used a sound measuring app on my phone to measure the interior volume when travelling at 110 km/h. Vios measured 60 dBA. Honda City also measured 60 dBA. Mazda 3 measured 63-64 DBA and the CX-5 measured 63 dBA. It is very surprising the Mazda C-segment vehicles are slightly louder than the Toyota and Honda B-Segments. However, it is not that noticeable during the drive. Maybe because I was busy talking to the salesperson.
- The Mazda 3’s ride is a bit stiff. Bumps are clearly felt.  Maybe because of the 18” wheels. Perhaps changing to 16” wheels with a thicker sidewall may help. This is compared to the softer tires of my Vios 15” Continental CC6 and Honda City’s 15” Yokohama Advan DB.
- i-Stop may need getting used to. The car restarting sound is a bit unsettling but it does restart instantaneously so it shouldn’t be a problem in stop-go traffic.

Quality Control is supposed to be really good because it’s under the direct supervision of Mazda’s people from Japan.

Overall, I was quite impressed with the Mazda 3 because it feels very stable.

I personally think that for purely city driving, the Mazda 2 would be the best choice because it’s smaller, lighter, and has a snappier response. If only it had 6 airbags, then it would be an instant buy.

m3 is stable all the way to its top speed, 150km/h is just normal speed on highway, you cruise on PLUS highway from KL to ipoh at 170km/h without slowing down for corners if there is no car, if not because of the poor sound insulation you wont even noticed you have gone above 150km/h in no time
acceleration doesn't lose to vios, it feel sluggish because you are used to the throttle response of vios where they tuned it to be more responsive so it doesn't feel sluggish while m3 is built for smooth and comfortable acceleration, in 0-100 vios cant keep up with our gear ratio and shifting speed, let alone the acceleration
downgrade from 18" to 16" for comfort is a big NO for C-segment cars, 17" is the maximum if want to downsize
m3 suspension is biased toward sporty handling, thus more bumpy ride but in return you get stable cornering

Hi guys just want to ask

Whats the fc for mazda 3?
Full tank for city drive can last for how many kms?

I took an uber before the guy was driving mazda 2. He said full tank can get 700km! Is that true? And how much is the fulltank?

Im driving nissan sylphy and my FC fulltank rm100(latest fuel price increase) can drive around 380-400km only.

Why would you say downsize to 16" is a big NO? After all, the GL spec comes standard with 205/60 R16" wheels.

with 16" you will get more floating feel when driving at high speed especially on uneven highway due to the higher sidewall, if the road is flat and straight then you will definitely feel more comfortable

unless you are using UHP 16" tires then the above might not be applicable, but if you are going for comfort i dont think you will want to go for UHP tires after downsize

another thing to note is that our car is heavy, even with 18" Toyo stock tires the car will slide at some of the corners in Genting, using 16" you will gain slightly better acceleration but the the tires will easily give up on the grip

and 16" doesn't match with the out look of m3

I'm driving the M3 GL with 16" rims and I don't get the floaty feeling at high speed up to 150 km/hr.

No one can justify 16" or 18" is better. When the manufacturer can provide you such a setup, it is safe to go, it's more to personal view. Whichever you feel comfortable to go with, just go ahead.

16" with higher profile definitely provides more comfort to driver and passenger, i think road noise also lesser than the 18".
18" definitely creates more cabin noise due to the Toyo UHP tyres, better response due to harder sidewall, less tyres flex, it's more to provide you a greater feedback on road condition.

some members even downgrade to 17" to achieve both. But IMO, I will not go lower than 17" because 16" is a nono to me. I feel it is a bit undersize for such an elegant vehicle. Cheers.

a little more fuel efficient, more comfort ride, less tyre noise but compromise a bit of look and sporty handling then 16"

look nicer, not that comfortable, more tyre noise, more sporty handling then 17", 18"

betul?

You want to say i wrote too much isn't it? Hahaha. tongue.gif

But the way, 18 aint not comfortable, my 60 y/o parents also never complain about that. Tyre noise can be reduce depends on which tyre you use. Toyo that comes with the car is noisy! Over time you'll still get used to it.

Yes, quite true. I remembered the previous generation Honda City had harsher suspension, harder and less comfortable than the mazda with 18in.
