I've just bought A5100 with the Kit lens. I'm very basic and noob at photography. Last decent camera I had was Canon S90, point and shoot camera. Basically wanna prepare for my baby, mostly to get portrait pictures of my wife and the baby. Is this Kit Lens enough? Should I go for prime lense? And any guide and tips tips for me sifuu?

Kit lens is enough for your usage. Once (if) the hobby grow in you, you'll probably want to get prime or another lens but for now kit lens should be able to serve you well.

Forgot to mention that my wife just got a iPhone 7. Is it redundant? A5100 same quality as iPhone 7?

Depends on the condition I would say. Sometimes iPhone could be better due to the lens. The kit lens is really really slow that the iso get pushed too high under the very same light condition. Some shots would turn out better on a phone straight out of camera.

Thank you! Probably best if I practice first and later maybe I can upgrade

where & how much u bought?

Bought at Digital Mall.

RM2,100 with the original boxes + Lens cover + Tripod + Sony 16gb sd card

the picture quality is better compared to iPhone 7, especially in low light situations.

Now still 90% of the time shooting using Intelligent Auto mode. Still slowly learning about aperture, ISO, etc.

The A5100 should serve you well, as it's already at least 85% of the A6000. Most of my UWA shots are taken with my A5100 (my A6000 does "normal" duty) and it hasn't failed me yet.

Here's a noob example (and sorry folks, it's from the same place as my last pic example lol - it's probably one of the better stops I had when I was over "there"):

user posted imageSeeking Shelter by Eirakkun, on Flickr

Here, the A5100 shrugs sub-zero temps like a champ just like the A6000, even though both aren't exactly weather-proof by any means (and no, it being hardy doesn't save me from my noob photo taking skills lol).

So yeah, the A5100 really is capable beyond its initial noobish looks (the controls being buried under menus are a bit of a pain though), so don't worry about it. Just read up, learn, go out there and shoot - at least until you get a better feel of what you have.

Only after that do we talk about "additional acquisitions".
*
Yes you're right. It's probably not healthy to do an acquisition right after an IPO tongue.gif

I'll try to learn the basics first with this A5100 and think about upgrading later. Hopefully I can take decent photos of my upcoming baby 🚼

Thanks again!

Just a quick question. I've had my A5100 for almost a month now, which came together with the Kit Lens 16-50mm. Is it a good idea if I trade that Kit lens with Sigma 30mm 1.4f? My baby is coming out in 1 month time, so I'm planning to take lots of baby pictures. Please someone advise me.

Depends. If you're looking for a quick answer though, for me no it's not worth trading in your kit lens for a prime. Get a prime to complement the kitty, UNLESS you NEVER want to shoot anything else but portraits of your baby, EVER.

Otherwise, it's better to keep the kitty for everything else you need to shoot.

In regards to lens choice though, the Sigma 1.4/30 is a great prime, though for baby pics I'd argue that the SEL35 is just as good (and often cheaper especially if you can find one used).

Why specifically is a tad longer to explain. Read below:

However all this is just my non-expert opinion on the matter. YMMV really (as always), and others might have their own say so it's entirely up to you to decide.

Interesting point of view. Yes the OSS really puts the SEL35 ahead of the Sigma, especially if I wanna take videos of my baby. Thanks!

One more question as I'm very noob at this. I'm pretty sure I'm going after Sony OSS next for my A5100, for taking my baby pictures. What's the difference between the 50mm 1.8f and 35mm 1.8f? Which one should suit me best? Thanks sifuuuu

Those mm number indicating focal length, or in layman's term, how "zoomed" it is. 35mm is about, say, your average smart phone camera zoomed 2x in (more like 1.9x), and 50mm is about zoomed 3x (more like 2.7x).

Use your smartphone and zoom 2x and 3x to see which lens you'll find useful to shoot. You'll usually immediately find that the 3x view is reaching far thus you really have to step back to get s shot of your baby.

EDIT: Saw the you have your kit lens already, you can set your kit lens to those focal length, and use accordingly to see if which focal length suits you. Both will give you bigger aperture of f1.8 compared to your kit lens, which give you more lights (2x to 3x) and thus ISO will be lower, or shutter speed can be faster. They'll give you more background out of focus, too. But they are fixed zoom, you can't zoom in/out with those fixed lens.
*
Thank you for the very brief, simple, non-jargon explanation for noob like me rclxms.gif

Will try with my kit lens and make sense of which focal lenght would I prefer more for getting shots of my baby. Thanks!

Problem is, sometimes the lighting (might be too dark to shoot at faster shutter speeds) and/or DOF constraints (you might not want to shoot at razor thin f/1.4 all the time), like I said) don't allow you to - unless you're cool with ISO3200 or 6400.

So, like I said, it depends. Ultimately, Sigma IS the technically more superior lens, though IMHO the SEL35 is easier to use.
*
So SEL35 is easier to use, from the point of view of noob beginners like me? I know for experts, 1.4f seems like a considerable advantage over 1.8f. But for the eyes of the noob, would 1.4f and 1.8f make a lot of difference?

Unfortunately (currently) you cant find any new Sony E35mm 1.8 lens anywhere in Malaysia.

Even used one also very hard to get.

Very limited.

There is actually a few sold in Lazada. Cheapest one is priced at RM1,477.

Well, that we can't argue against. Gotta wait for the new shipment to come in ler, hopefully with the old price also.

ms749 Like I said before, the SEL35 is easier as it's small, has slightly better "rendering" (colours and contrast look a bit more organic to me - though you can always adjust in Photoshop/Lightroom later) and does OSS helps eliminate blur in photos due to handshake (as well as stabilising video like Casey Joo said).

On the other hand, the Sigma is sharper (yet has slightly more distortion around the edges - there's a reason why it's NOT an ART lens), faster, pricier... and a whole lot bigger. It's also not as solidly built as the SEL35 (though the SEL35 isn't THAT well built either).

That said, a 30mm 1.4 lens (even for only APSC) IS a rarity in itself, and that should be counted in the Sigma's favour.

To be honest, go to a shop that allows you to try stuff (like YL Camera, PJ or Pudu Plaza), and test both. Go with what you feel takes better pictures FOR YOU.

Well, at least IMHO. As always, YMMV like I said and do take the points given by the others into consideration as well.

Problem is, right now, there's a supply shortage (see above) of the SEL35 and you might not have a choice anyway if you're in a rush to buy.
*
Saw a couple of SEL35 being sold in Lazada around RM1,488. Not sure if that's cheap enough.

Eventhough its stated there in Lazada its 'in stock'.. actually its not available..

I've contacted them (the seller) personally.. Plus i called Sony Center KLCC, Midvalley, The Curve and they say NO STOCK for now..

All the online (Shashinki, Kengdim, YLCamera, KLDSLR, C2U, Miyamondo, Camera Valley etc.) camera shop also no stock.

Its very rare to get the new 35mm 1.8 right now..

So basically i give up searching for 3518 haha.. gonna get the wider 2418 lens  biggrin.gif  biggrin.gif  biggrin.gif

I literally just got a reply from Kengdim (Lazada) and they said still got stock. Go to Lazada and check it on the Q&A section.

I think so. Now its just the dilemma whether to get it now or wait until my baby comes out 1 month later. rclxub.gif

Guys, what about if I buy the Meike 35mm 1.7f manual focus just to get the 'feel' of the larger aperture lenses. Currently selling at RM289 @ Lazada.

Or just jump straight to Sony 35mm 1.8f or Sigma 30mm 1.4f?

and did you end up upgrading to AF lenses?

Came across this video, seems like the SEL35mm 1.8 vs Sigma 30mm 1.4 colour rendition is true - Sigma took warmer more yellowish colour. hmm.gif

*
Darn it. I've just bought Sigma 30mm 1.4f two days ago, after a month toying with the Kit Lens. Anyway, it is truly satisfying! Bokehlicous!

Bought it at Carousell for RM1150. Only 4 month old with unregistered warranty. So far loving it so much! The zoom motor quite noisy. I belive OSS only comes with Sony lenses.
