Robert Kubica has reinforced BMW's boast that they are now capable of challenging for wins by setting the fastest time on the opening day of testing in Malaysia.
The Pole's best lap of 1:36.187 was fractionally quicker than that of Kimi Raikkonen, the race winner in Australia two weeks ago. It's believed that Kubica used a modified gearbox to counter the problem that caused his Melbourne retirement.
Williams also served notice of their apparent return to form through Alex Wurz finishing third-fastest with a near-identitcal time to Raikkonen's. The team expressed concern at their one-lap pace around Albert Park and appear to have gone some way to rectifying that deficinency already in Malaysia.
However, taken at face value, the most surprising time of the day was that of Rubens Barrichello. Honda endured a miserable Australian GP, lapping two seconds slower than Raikkonen's Ferrari. But the Brazilian was able to set the fourth-fastest time on Tuesday, barely half-a-second adrift of the Finn and ahead of the lone McLaren, driven by Pedro de la Rosa.
The Spaniard will be replaced by Lewis Hamilton on Wednesday, with Fernando Alonso given the week off.

Added on March 27, 2007, 11:54 pmThe spectre of a ten-place grid demotion still hangs over Kimi Raikkonen after Ferrari confirmed that his engine will require further inspection in Malaysia.
Although the Finn won comfortably at the season-opening Australian GP, he was forced to slow down in the closing stages of the race due to fears that his engine was developing a water leak. Any such problem will be exacerbated, potentially terminally, in the searing heat of Sepang next weekend.
"We had a small water leakage so the pressure dropped a little. And we were concerned about water temperature of course. That is why we asked him to be careful," Ferrari's engine chief Gilles Simon clarified.
Should Ferrari err on the side of caution and change the engine ahead of qualifying then Raikkonen would suffer a demotion of ten grid places - exactly the same penalty that his team-mate Felipe Massa endured in Melbourne on what proved to be a frustrating weekend for the Brazilian.
