Is Archer C7 v4 a good choice?

I need a router that can extend to a 2 floors unit.
Got any other recommendations for RM 350?

Previous version is using Atheros chipset which is inferior to the dual core broadcom chipset which is popular now. I suggest you look at Tenda AC18.

However I can't guarantee your need for coverage. That's because many people misunderstand how wifi coverage works. It's in radius, thus it's best to place it in the middle of the house in order to maximise signal strength. If you're placing it in one corner, you're effectively reducing your wifi strength to 1/4 of it's full strength.

Err.. I don't need it because I already bought WS880 during sales last time.

I see. I feel like the thick casing is causing it to overheat in recent hot weather.

Today I pried open one of mine, cut a hole at the back to and leave the front open. It has a bare heatsink at the front and fin heatsink at the back. Let's see if it helps. Might add a fan later.

No consumer router can truly cover double storey homes. I bought a cheap router to cover my first floor, connected via powerline adapters to the main router downstairs. Luckily found out my built-in phone lines can be converted to ethernet ports, so I will do that when Unifi turbo upgrade comes.

Do u have a router eg stock one given by TM? If yes, you can bring the stock router upstair and add a decent router + powerline adapters. Tenda AC9 + TP-Link PA4010 kit will fit your budget.

Do you have built-in TV antenna points?

Thank you both for the feedback.

I found Powerline adapters not to be as reliable as I hope.
To give a little of background this isn't a huge house and uh, it isn't my house and they are using the stock router given by Maxis - Technicolor. We all know how "capable" it is.
I guess I should bring the extra router I have laying around which is the Archer C4 given by TM to test the coverage.

By the way, is Tenda really good compared to TP-Link? Not in terms of price, but reliability and speed.

Actually depends what you mean by 'cover'. My WS880 bought just about when this thread started covers my 20-x-80 2 and a half storey just fine, if all you need it for in the further edges is internet CONNECTION (can browse etc). Your speed is gonna be quite a bite slower, but at least reliably can use.

Spec-wise & reliability-wise looks ok for Tenda. But don't buy Tenda if u wanna install other firmwares eg DD-WRT.

I see your electrical wiring might be abit noisy hence not-so-good Powerline performance. Do you have inverter air-conds in the house?

If u have co-axial points, you can use co-axial to ethernet adapters. Around RM 100 I think.

Best option is to bring an ethernet cable upstairs but a lot of hacking & drilling is required.

Do you have built-in telephone lines?

Otherwise your best bet is to use at least AC1900 class router.

It's also okay (and easier) to just pin the cable to the corners of the wall using cable holders. Some will not like the 'look', but generally speaking if you're willing to accept a more raw/industrial look it's not bad to do it that way. And its really fast compared to powerline.

Agree. Not everyone can accept the ugly look. But u'll get full gigabit speed in return.

Replying to your comment on hacking/drilling, just to say it's not always necessary.

Someone did ask me on their tmobile branded AC68U cant be updated to 384.6

Basically you need to update the MD5 Partition then only try to upgrade to latest 384.6

First, enable SSH to your router and SSH to your router

Then run command as below

CODE
mkdir /tmp/asus_jffs
mount -t jffs2 /dev/mtdblock5 /tmp/asus_jffs
rm -rf /tmp/asus_jffs/*
sync && umount /tmp/asus_jffs
rm -rf /jffs/.sys/RT-AC68U
nvram unset fw_check && nvram commit && reboot

then try update your firmware

remember to backup your setting first

Isnt this a biz opportunity for those freelance network experts to bring in cheap router like Tmobile and customed it to work seemlessly with Unifi during this time of Unifi-turbo-upgrade?

Hi all and I am using this router since the good deal offer from Lowyat Plaza as well flushed to MERLIN.

I would like to know if anyone else already gotten the Unifi Turbo'ed and what are the results?

Personally from me, Turbo'ed to 500 Mbps is archivable with CAT6 network cable. Tested on TM Speed Test.

Meanwhile, my concerns are on wifi. Tested on 5G with both Samsung Galaxy 8+ and as well desktop PC on USB TP-Link T9UH with only 210-220 Mbps download and consistently 100-102Mbps upload. Wifi distance within same room. Forget about 2.4G because only 30+ sad.gif

Please do share me if you have better results and what could be the possible configuration? Thank you very much.

My location is in Cheers.

Same thing to me, speed tested with WIFI, max get 210Mbps with Unifi 30Mbps turbo'ed to 300Mbps.

Found out the WS880 one cpu reach 100% and another cpu reach 50% during test, I believe it is WWS880 limits
