Hello guys, new to the whole networking world and been browsing this forum for the past 2 days. So i have a question, these question about variation of modem MOST of them implied to the speed you get via Wi-FI right??

Does that subsequently mean, physical lan (cat6) cable connection doesnt matter? Other than the basic ADSL or VDSL modem wise. (<For my case)

Those who bought from taobao, quick question, no need to apply for SIRIM when it reaches Malaysia?

Yes and no. To get the fastest speed possible, you would ideally want to get a modem that can support the gigabit LAN connection. Cat6 cable does matter, for LAN connection.

You don't really need Cat6 for Gigabit Ethernet, especially if it's just a short length.

I know. But, it is better for future proof and the price is not too much over Cat5e.

Yeah thats what i though, so i chose cat6 and did the extension myself via ceiling from modem to a room.

Also, what modem would be given by TM? Any red flag modem i should avoid?

I didnt slip the cat6 cable with a PVC Pipe nor PVC flexible conduit, is that ok? would heat/dust deteriorate it? If its side by side with the L N E of electrical cable, does magnetic wave or the sort would affect the cable/connection in anyway?

Good to hear you manage to save some costs. The list of gigabit modems are as below:

Huawei HG824Qw (Gigabit)
Alcatel Lucent I240G (Gigabit)

If you put your Ethernet cable side side by side with electrical cable, then it will affect it but I am not too sure to what extent, but there will be definitely interference of some sort, especially if it is UTP, and not STP, which is shielded.

See here: https://www.techrepublic.com/blog/10-things...-network-cable/

Such a good read, THANK YOU! Guess i will shield the cable with individual pipes and casings; good thing i havent install the RJ45 jack yet but the ceiling space, holy shit; i would imagine if the TM contractor install confirm expensive as fck.

Btw, is Cat6 like more than "enough" for now? Its like 13 meters only; the better version of Cat6 and above would only apply to distance right?

Cat6 is more than enough, if it is only 13 meters. Don’t worry about anything after Cat6.

Merlin just released 384.6 BETA 1
Download - https://asuswrt.lostrealm.ca/download

CODE
384.6 (xx-xxx-xxxx)
  - NOTE: The RT-AC87U is not supported in this release, as
Asus hasn't released any updated code for that model.
  - NEW: Merged with GPL 384_21045/382_50624.
  - NEW: Added support for the "-p" option to netstat.
  - NEW: Added setting to enable DNS rebind protection, on the
DHCP page.  This works by rejecting upstream server
responses that would point at a private IP.
  - CHANGED: Updated nano to 2.9.8
  - CHANGED: Updated curl to 7.60.0 (contains security fixes)
  - CHANGED: Allow selecting text (for copy/paste operations)
             on AiProtection pages.
  - CHANGED: Added AES-*-GCM ciphers to the OpenVPN legacy
ciphers (so they can be explicitely used without
             using NCP).
  - CHANGED: Updated dnsmasq to 2.80test2-17-g51e4eee (themiron)
  - CHANGED: Since dnsmasq 2.80, dnsmasq now ensures that unsigned
DNS replies received with DNSSEC enabled are legitimate.
If your upstream DNS doesn't support DNSSEC, this means
all replies from signed zones will be considered
invalid.  Make sure you only enable DNSSEC if your
upstream DNS servers do support it.  This behaviour is
a bit slower, but far more secure than the old default.
  - CHANGED: Network Tools -> Netstat output also report program/PID
  - CHANGED: Updated CA bundle to June 20th version.
  - FIXED: IPv6-related issues on non-HND platform (themiron)
  - FIXED: Couldn't log on WTFast if accessing the router
           webui over https.
  - FIXED: USB modem support code failing to properly pass
parameters to the kernel module (themiron)
  - REMOVED: WTFast support for RT-AC88U/RT-AC3100/RT-AC5300,
as it's incompatible with recent versions of
curl (and has been broken for quite some time).
Not gonna revert back to a 7 years old curl
             version just for wtfast.

I have a question here guys. Is this wireless router really THAT GOOD?

I'm asking because Huawei Imago KK is selling THIS EXACT ROUTER for RM238.00. One year warranty, from Huawei Malaysia even. Just found out about this when I go there to get a phone for me. Just grabbed one to replace a dying AP N-only that should have been replaced a long time ago.

Maybe I should grab another one on my way home?

Yes, exactly that one. I went ahead and get another one on my way home, the salesman looks at me funny. No, sir I am not going to buy another P20 Pro.

Just flashed one of them to latest version of Merlin, then configure it into AP mode. All I can say is that this router has no business being only RM238.00, it should have been at least twice the price.
