soonwai, getting ready to go to LYP anytime now.....

I called up Sri Coimputers this morning.

They said they have plenty of stock of the WS880, no worries. smile.gif

Can the original firmware support Unifi (VLAN tagging)?
*
Yes, support unifi out of the box

Great to hear that.

Will test this out too.

I have postponed my purchase with Sri Computers to tomorrow Sunday.

Something urgent cropped up unexpectedly.

Kudos to Kiding for letting us know the good bargain smile.gif. This router is kind of in between AC68U & AC56U. Very good choice for anyone looking to get their first AC router. I always feel AC router with fast ethernet is stupid as wireless AC easily saturate the lan connection even with 1T1R client.

I really hate those overpriced 1K plus wifi router. I rather get 3 pack of UAP AC at that price point. Hope distributor stop trying to price fixing their router.

kiding How was the original firmware? I couldn't find any manuals or screenshots of it. Must be terrible since you flashed it to ASUSWRT so quickly.
Yeah, crazy price right? What's the catch? There must be a catch.

The firmware is very limited and the bootloader is locked. You will have to flash modified bootloader just to unlock it & flash third party firmware. Not for newbies that are not comfortable with these procedures.

Did you have to flash a modified unlocked bootloader first as mentioned by jio?

Yes, just follow TS procedures at first post. It is easy.

Thanks.

I have somehow missed that part.

Let's say I successfully loaded Xwrt-Vortex firmware first.

What do I need to do to load the AdvancedTomato firmware next?

If I don't like AdvancedTomato, how do I reload Xwrt-Vortex?

I suggest use Xwrt-Vortex (AsusWRT-Merlin) instead of AdvancedTomato/Tomato-Shibby unless you really can't stand the clunky GUI of AsusWRT. Tomato ARM is not exactly that stable unlike their MIPS build for older devices. I don't like tomato over reliance of NVRAM for all the settings. Even 64K may not be enough if you have multiple VPN setup & multiple virtual SSIDs.

BTW, stock Malaysian firmware is so old & dumbed down. You can't manually set the VLAN for the PPPoE, only have preset for Unifi. If you really want stock firmware to not voiding the warranty, try the Hong Kong firmware. It allows manual selection of the VLAN for the PPPoE.

Saw other forum, if flash AT first, you can flash to Xwrt-Vortex within AT firmware upgrade page.
If flash Xwrt-Vortex first, no idea can be flashed to AT at the Xwrt-Vortex firmware upgrade page.
Haven't tried all these.

OK, in that case, I flash AT first.

Then use AT firmware upgrade page to flash Vortex at a later stage. biggrin.gif

I would appreciate if you could direct me to the relevant download webpage for the HK firmware.

I can't seem to be able to locate the Huawei WS880 official support site.

Sorry, I guess it not exactly HK. You can download from the china site http://consumer.huawei.com/cn/search/index...?keywords=ws880

You will still have the existing UI language.

I have downloaded this Chinese firmware too.

The problem is, I can't understand what the PDF manual says.

It would be a problem if the firmware UI language is in Chinese.

Never mind, just forget it. biggrin.gif

I already told you UI will be in the existing language, which is english. What it got to do with the documentation?
