Jack Thompson is back and at it again! And this time he's going to, oh silly me, I mean trying to stop the release of Grand Theft Auto IV on the Xbox 360.

In an email that was sent out to various news outlets, titled "Bill Gates in the Crosshairs," Thompson says he will undertake various means to prohibit the sale of GTA IV and asks Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates to have his lawyers contact him to prevent such sales.

At last years Electronic Entertainment Expo, Microsoft revealed that GTA IV will no longer be a Playstation exclusive but will also be released for the 360 on day one. Grabbing GTA IV is a huge deal for Microsoft so you can rest safely knowing that Hell is more likely to freeze over before they let anything happen to it.

Come to think of it, kids in the US can easily have access to guns, bombs etc. which has pointed the blame towards GTA when there were several highschool shoot outs in US and Canada. We don't really see this in Malaysia.

Just my 2 cents though

Rockstar is his main target, coz if he can bring Rockstar down successfully others will follow behind like a stack of dominos..

but remember when he tried to rally parents to boycott and ban one of Rockstar's games "Bully" months before it's release? brought the case to the court and in the end it turned out to be that the game's storyline is quite different from what he expected..he made a fool of himself in public and Rockstar won the battle again.. doh.gif

i'm expecting the story will be the same here, unless he has some new arsenals inside his sleeves..

but nevertheless, u're pathetic Mister Jack Thompson, simply pathetic.. shakehead.gif

AND U'RE OUR PUBLIC ENEMY NUMBER 1!!

i thought the kid was inspired by DOOM? IINM, i read tht the kid said (about the shotgun he brought to school) it was "like something out of DOOM", or something like that.

anyway, i sincerely think tht this mr. jack "i wish i could kill him with a" Thompson should actually attack the flawed execution of game ratings by retailers. what in the blue hell is ESRB for?

u have M games, but still it's being bought by 10 yr olds. whenever a game comes out, it HAS to go thru ESRB for a reason. and IINM, GTA already got M rating (with the exception of San Andy cos of the Kopi Panas incident) so why are the politicians so pissed off and scared tht kids will buy it?

it's all becos of poor governance, be it from the retailers or the parents at the very core. fine, they can say "we must eliminate the source" which is said game developer, but where are our rights to entertainment freedom?

politicians are a bunch of crap. go ass crazy on something more important, obvious and globally affecting issues. like..i dunno...the genital-less Texan who is Bush maybe? sweat.gif

fortunately, we still don't have cases of kids here emulating GTA and God forbid let our young generation be dumb enough to do what those kids in the yew-ass-of A are doing.

OT: i remember there was a concern over wrestling on TV and kids emulating it and they wanted to ban wrestling. well, what about the kid who hanged himself because he emulated Saddam's execution which was shown on the news? Ban the news now eh? laugh.gif

Me thinks it's not all about the gore... it's more about the action itself... like the really really funny (but sick) highjacking animation in saints row... love the slam head on steering wheel/horn variation!

But on a more serious note, some videogames are way to violent... but that wouldn't be a problem if retailers adhered to the age restriction!

ESRB and those US game publishers are too profit-driven and short-sighted to change their model.

just change "rated mature to 18++" and IDcheck all minors, then all those jack thompsons and opportunistic politicians will be gone tongue.gif tongue.gif

did u ever wonder if gore was president instead, his viceP would ensure mature games will be sold ala cero-z like in japan?? no in-shop promotion, and hiding games behind the counters to protect the children

the firearms industry is protected by the Second Ammendment of the US Constitution that stated every Americans have the rights to own firearms..to change that needs the act of God(and also the Senate, which is impossible..) sweat.gif

Jack Thompson's crusade against violence and sex in videogames is exactly that. He is taking his ultra-conservative views against an industry. It's well known that he is a born-again Christian, and that his zeal for advocating his beliefs is a little more than vigourous.

And he is a politician. Every politician has an agenda. This is a fact. And this agenda, if it is not retirement, is the garnering of power. Politicians require a power base to remain in action, and without a base, they're done for. So how do you gain a power base? By becoming popular with the people who vote. Now, plenty of politicians have gone the other route, which is to lobby for consumer affairs, or for the rights of minorities or whatever. Jack Thompson is certainly not the first to take on an industry claiming it is in defense of the innocent, or the children, or great-grandmothers in wheelchairs. He however, has taken on one of the most liberal industries in the world, sitting alongside music and film and pretty much anything else creative, and protected by the right to free speech and all.

So he's portrayed himself as a champion against videogame violence, and given the unfortunate events in the States involving schoolyard slayings, he's got what he thinks is some ammunition to back his words. Now this might possibly appeal to all those shocked by these events (which is pretty much everyone), but it will definately hit a chord with those unable to see the full picture, or those willing to accept a cause-effect resolution in complete black and white. He may have statistics and some psychologist saying that there's a relation, but that's what it is. A relation between videogame violence and real-world violence. It's not the primary reason. It's not the catalyst. There is so much wrong in today's society that has deep-rooted causes that is not in anyway related to videogame violence. To prey on those who fail to recognise this and claim that it's a deciding factor is simply wrong.

Just because someone plays GTA doesn't mean that person will go on a rampage. Just because someone who did go ona rampage played GTA doesn't mean everyone else is going to also. The fact is, the seeds of the rampage has been sown long before the videogame was involved. Now, videogames aren't going to make anyone pull out a gun as much as movies or television is. Violence is much more deep-seated than what any exposure to entertainment can influence. It all boils down to the indivdual. And because of this, it's wrong to have an industry-wide blanket argument aimed at everyone, because each individual responds to things differently.

Jack Thompson should really be looking into some of the more important social issues his country is facing. Maybe he should take on the NRA. After all, they're the ones saying guns are good.

something people like JT need to think about:

malaysian kids buy M rated games..

i myself bought M rated games when i was 9/10.

yet i didnt turn out into a killer.

and neither did all of you.

but the american kids turn out to be killers, eventhough there it is restricted!

interesting how games are to be blamed hmm.gif hmm.gif when it mostly only happens in the U S of A whistling.gif
