the gyms are like a 'capture the flag' game mode. use the captured pokemon to battle it out. Either defend or be part of the attacking team.

for starting out, just capture as many pokemons, even duplicates, and level up the player first.
higher player level allows to catch higher powered pokemons which you can then use to powerup or evolve.
