i like the looks of it. despite the fact that there's a telephone button at the center console and so-so exterior, i like the interior and the comfort (almost similar to v40 i guess). tried sitting in the car last weekend at a used car shop and loving it. the 240-ish hp is a bonus though.

however, i have no idea on how reliable the car is and how crazy the parts price for this. checked the scheduled maintenance cost and i believe it is on the high side though.

anyway, i'm eagerly waiting on your calculation of the sub 80k car.
*
definitely on the high side (personally consider it to be on the 'very' high side), but if you have looked at the service schedules and can afford it.... well..............

Thank you all for the replies. The advice is appreciated and i have started to look at newer protons and even Kia Spectra
Just curious would servicing Kia Spectra be expensive?  Parts easy to come by?
Looking at:

2009 Kia Spectra 5 1.6 RM 13,800

2009 Kia Spectra 5 1.6 - High Milage RM14,000

2009 Ki Spectra 5 1.6 RM12,500

If i buy 2009 model and sell 2019 would it still qualify for loan and sell faster?  Or would the model have to be 2010?

Again, thanks for all the help and advice.

T-Rock

again..... redirecting to the path of an easy life.... It costs abit more but those are accordingly otr figures?? (best ask to find out if its a blatant lie, dont like the fact that they accept blacklisted buyers tho). being an 2010 car, also easier to sell off later on. I can already imagine the trade in values of that spectra...
se models come with more goodies but, those are over 15k atm..

5. Transmission : Prefably Auto
6. NA or FI :  NA

8. Remarks : Looking for a used car which is reliable, cheap maintenance, good FC and better still if the resale value can hold after say another 3-5 years. City travelling only

Thanks for any inputs, appreciate that!!
*
forget about resale its only 10k, theres only so much you can lose, just get something that wont need that much for its upkeep.

option 1 is the viva, its cheap (u can just barely afford a basic line auto i believe), cheap to maintain, cheap to run, and small enough that its easy to drive in the city.

option 2 is its older brother the kelisa, weight your pros and cons here, imo this is just older and may need some extra looking after.

option 3 saga blm bigger and has a boot, but does drink more fuel.

some might suggest savvy or bestari..... , i will tell you, dont poke them even with a stick, just stay far and safe.

When buying used car, do you people buy from direct owner or used car seller?
*
well depends on whats your priorities i guess... personally direct from seller cause 1)they know their cars best (but they might not be upfront about its issues anyway, 2)its usually cheaper. 3)cars at a dealership might have sat for a while (admittedly, not really an issue unless you are talking about very rare/hard to sell cars that barely get any attention) or have been tampered with (bring a kawan or mechanic to view)

sometimes its just more convenient to go through a dealer tho ofc you are paying for those services AND if you are looking at a few models you might be able to view several models at one go.

Where do you find private seller?  Not many listed in mudah.
*
what are you looking for exactly... diferent cars might be slightly diferent.
1)newspapers (was a thing long ago, nowadays meh)
2)well driving around you can randomly see cars on sale (more old cars, sometimes you find some real decent rare stuff)
3)now for less common cars, owners clubs, especially care cars or those that have some sort of following ( thats how i managed to get mine.)
4)other sites?
5)word by mouth

imo method 3 is most practical (and hanging around in these clubs does ). Very often owners with the really nice cars try sell their cars in these clubs at obscene prices (its usually cause they spent a good sum on em OR they are just blinded by the sellability of their car) but every once in a while, units do come up for sale for very good prices. (really depends on the model, some cars are difficult to sell). You just got to wait for the right deal (which might take a while). An added bonus, the other members might know of the car and some may be able to provide you some insight on the car's history.

That in bold is not really true. Very often owners actually are arrogant and trying to sell even more expensive as if their cars are the best condition in the world, or like gold! Used car dealers on the other hand surely already got their cars at much lower price (low ballers) and you can bargain a lot with them, while if you do the same with direct owners, they will easily get offended.
*
i can agree with that..... there gona be a few owners trying to sell their cars for obscene prices.... then when ppl sell for lower, they start to merungut spoil marketlah ape benda....

Boss, as per my previous post, just would like to get your 2cents on the matter.

Right now basically we have shortlisted a few option:

Sylphy (This version, not the older squarish one)
As you've mentioned a few times in the past I think this will be a good spacious car for a long distance or sometimes family travel.

Taena 2.0
However, we are quite confused by the fact that there are almost no difference between Sylphy and Taena in price difference. It makes us wonder whether it is more advisable to just shoot for a higher class Taena which will be more future proof. Of course we are also expecting a rise in maintenance costs. Are you aware of any issues we need to look at or do you have an opinion on which will be better?

Subaru XV
An outside shot right now is XV, or another one would be an ASX. We would actually prefer an SUV as we own one many years back. The driving position is favourable to us compared to sedans. But for our price range we are looking at alot of KIAs, Fords etc. Again we are expecting it to see a difference in maintenance cost if it is a Subaru.

What do you think of the 3 which makes more sense in this situation? Or do you think we should be looking at some other options that are available out there?

Thanks for your time  notworthy.gif
*
The silphy 2.0 isnt exactly a powerful car, the teana with the 2.0?? thats a tiny engine for such a big heavy car. fc is gona suffer and as you are already well aware, maintanance is a stage higher where anything else is considered.

xv is sort is sensible, maintanance isnt like crazy or anything, fc is decent for a awd vehicle and it handles like a car...

honestly its not as bad as one would expect, servicing in the sc's costs as much as any other
typical Japanese marque....

have several friends (in kl) owning xv's forresters, none have any issues with the sc. Nothing positive, nothing negative all completely neutral responses haha!! Once the warranty is done with, there are a few subaru experts around the area....

Hi all!

1. Brand. : Jap/Conti
2. Budget. : RM30-35k Cash, not looking to take loan.
3. New/Used/Unreg. : Used
4. Specs. : Any
5. Transmission. : Auto
6. NA or FI : Any
7. Type. : Sedan/Wagon
8. Remarks. : Looking for a new ride since my current one (2003 wira 1.3 (m) aeroback) which I had for 5yrs has recently broken down a few times resulting in rm2k+ repairs. Still have alot of underlining problems eg. oil leak from engine, bad ball joints etc. Decided it's time to get a new ride before I have more down time & have to fork out more $ for a failed cause.

Have cash in hand RM35k as budget but hoping dun have to fully utilize that. Also had set aside RM5k in case need any repairs (fingers crossed not gonna end up getting a lemon so dun have to touch the RM5k). Have also budget RM500-1k/month for future maintenance eg. oil change, normal servicing etc (With RM5k as standby for any major repairs).
thats a fair amount, more than sufficient to own even an early 2000's beemer infact.

Used for daily commute of 120km-180km(70% City 30% Highway) for me, wife & a 4yo. Weekends usually <80km but need to carry 2-3 relatives for shopping/makan. Have plans for a few road trips from Johor to KL & Penang annually(should be just me, wife & kid or maybe 2 additional adults).

I'm actually fond of old cars (circa 1950s to 1980s) but dun think in this case it suits my needs. Been looking & reading up on late 90s-early 2000s Jap & Conti which falls into my budget & requirements. So far shortlisted late era 1st Gen Mazda 6 2.3 (A) & 9th Gen Toyota Altis 1.8G (A) as possible picks with my heart leaning alot towards Mazda 6 cuz I like the design, specs & lower price tag. As for Conti, read that Mercs from that era should be more reliable although I like looks of Beemers. My 4yo is crazy about Volvo so if there's a good model to recommend, will definitely consider so he gets to ride in one. Looking for something that will last at least the next 3-5yrs without any major down time. Would appreciate any recommendations(not just those I shortlisted).

Thanks in advance!
*
just saw this while browsing through.....

the mazda 6 is abit of a stretch given a 35k budget? A more 'common' easier to maintain large D-seg (im assuming you are looking for a D seg given you are considering the mazda 6) is the 7th gen accord. Large cars decently equipped reliable AND powerful to boot. If you want something newer, you can consider the inspira. its a decent car, less plush but its a nice car to drive (on the sportier side)

volvo's spare bits tend to cost quite abit. so personally would not recommend those, maintanance can go higher than mercs of the same age.

You seem pretty fixed on the vios. if your priorities are reliability, vios needs no introduction. If you dont need a boot, you can consider the the myvi.... same like the vios, just a smaller edition with no backside.

1. Brand : Proton/Perduo (Prefer Local brand for cheaper Maintenance fee )
2. Budget : Below RM10K
3. New/Used/Unreg : Used
4. Specs : Doesn't matters, Just need a vehicle that travel around the country.
5. Transmission : Prefer Auto (Just get my P license recently)
7. Type :4 seater and any vehicle larger than Kancil will be good enough (Fat Guy with long leg)
8. Remarks :

Just pass my JPJ driving test yesterday, don't have too much budget and cash for my first vehicle as i will resign from my current job before CNY.

Need a vehicle to familiar the driving skill for my future job and I'm zero knowledge and experience on vehicle.
Just look for a vehicle that can suit for driving in city/town and expressway (if my new job require for outstation) and maintenance fee in the acceptable range like (below RM200-300/mths)

Prefer to start from Auto transmission even thought i know manual car are have cheaper fuel consumption and Maintenance but my clutch skill isn't enough to driving in KL city.

Plan to apply H.P for the vehicle purchase but no sure will the bank approve or not as the value is below RM10K,
After resign from current job i might be jobless for a period of time so cash is important for me.

Just do a quick research yesterday that the following model market price are within my budget:

Proton : Wira , Gen 2 , Iswara , Waja ,Saga
Perodua  : Kenari , Kembara , Viva

Most of the vehicle that fit my budget are 13-20 year old vehicle and i don't expect it will still be good for another 5-10yrs just need for a vehicle that work for 2-3years with less problem.
*
first things first, do NOT get a kereta sambung bayar nomater how cheap it seems.
second, cars this old, you wont get a loan.

now about your choices.
-Wira , Iswara - these 2 are tanky BUT if you want an automatic car, imo these are big nono's. The iswara autoboxes are terrible, fc is crap and they do fail. wira autoboxes are just crap and given you might need to travel long distance, skip this. (iswara with a manual box however will work)
-gen 2, well soso car, fc aint great. Waja assuming you dont touch the renault , is also prettymuch the same with maybe slightly worse fc.
-kembara, forget it, waste of time if you ask me. some might disagree but thats my opinion, tall unstable fuel guzzlers.
-viva is alright if u can actually find a decent automatic unit for that money.
-kelisa < why is it not in the list? reliable, and decent all round. Just older and cheaper than the viva (some will say better in some ways but thats for you to test and decide)

There is not Kelisa that available in KL area from Carlist and Mudah are below RM10K,most are above RM10K that why i didn't included in the list.

sure ade... u just need to look harder. anyway if kelisa is difficult to find for that price, viva auto will be just as difficult

Dear sifus,

Currently I own a Toyota vios G 2009, market value I checked is around 29k. Car is still in tip top condition, mileage going to be 200k soon. Thinking whether shall I trade in for it still has value or use it till it expires lol.

willing to top up 10k if there's a need to get newer car. Wondering Almera is a good choice? As it seems like I can get a more recent car even if I don't top up any.

1. Brand. : Any
2. Budget. : Trade in vios 2009 G. Top up 10k
3. New/Used/Unreg. : Used
4. Specs. : Any
5. Transmission. : Auto
6. NA or FI : Not sure what is this?
7. Type. : Preferably sedan
8. Remarks. : Low & easy maintenance car. For outstation work sometimes to north/ south (2 mths once), mainly local travel.

Thank you!
*
eh i thought i have already replied to this... but its missing, anyway...........

if the car is still in tip top cond, why change? just use it till it dies and since its a vios, that will be forever (or as long as forever can be)
an almera will just be a slightly newer smaller underpowered version of your vios. Dont think you can really get one for 30k anyway if its as good condition as your (assuming it really is that good)

Thanks bro! Ended up getting a Mazda 6 2.3 2007 from a private seller on mudah a week ago. Really enjoyed the drive
& the looks. 130k on the odometer with full service record & seller asking for rm28k which is well within my budget. So far so good but heard that can be quite hard to find spare parts for 1st gen M6 which would probably means pricey. Keeps fingers crossed.
*
Congrats!!

well slightly pricier parts was sort of to be expected no? i mean less common, D-seg... once less common comes into the picture, it tends to be abit more pricy.

hi sifu

just browsing thru mudah website and come across civic hybrid 1.5 year 2012-2013 with price arnd 55k. similar civic non hybrid is arnd 70k for the same year.

my question is, why the hybrid price is cheaper? is it not good, hard to maintain? in some ad, they tell that the battery still have warranty for quite some time..

is it because the battery replacement cost too high which make the model selling cheaper? other parts should be the same with non hybrid right?

thanks
*
civic's value is on the high side far a few reasons. one of which is its demand. I fyou take a look, certain civics demand a fair amount (other than the previous fb)

One question, who buys civics and why? Now think about these people who just popped into your mind, would they want to drive a 1.5l civic? no? so thats the first reason why its resale isn't as strong

People also dont tend to trust hybrids that much yet. (honestly the battery replacements are not that expensive and they seem to be relatively reliable. It would probably cost a bomb if the hybrid related bits do go wrong (you cannot go to any outside workshop and you are at the mercy of hm).

2 way diferent cars.... comparing the inspira to the fd2 is fine, not the hybrid.... you have to figureout what you want 1st.

Dear Sifu,

My myvi sales agent told me that their company do not have the color that i wanted, only with the loan approval letter, they can submit to request the car. Is this true? What if they do not have the color I requested at the end?

thanks
*
1)ofc... they cant order the car unless they are sure you can pay for it.

2)about colors... normally you get to select a 1st and 2nd choice.... and queues for each color. If the 1st choice isnt available or has a very long waiting list AND your 2nd option is available they might offer your 2nd choice to you. U accepting or not is another matter. In the case of the myvi, things might be alittle diferent. AFAIK its production is already seized so certain colors might be out of stock, im not sure.

3)if that color isnt available, just select another color (or you know ask at another dealership if its available.... (state you want that color and only that color)

May I know how much can roughly sell ?

Aside from that , if I want to buy second hand car, will iriz or persona will be my best choice, want to get a car below 40k

Thank you .

1) you didnt mention, A/M, what spec. so anywhere from 12-20k.....

2)for 40k you have quite a few options. Best choice means diferent things to diferent people, the 2 you have picked out are decent practical cheap to run newish cars. But if you are willing to throw money at it you can afford cars like inspiras... or even way older but fun cars like a altezza or celica.

Max budget I can go also around 40--45k , not manage to fort out so much of money as I only can trade in my old car and get another used car .

Prefer car that is simple and low cost maintenance , thinking to get a standard new persona , but still worry about the quality of car .. I did consider of standard new iriz or bezza too, but in that case , if I get iriz  or bezza it will be no different with my current car right now @@.
*
my 2 sen, iriz is a good pick if you dont need the space. Quality... well decent enoughlah (for that kind of money), fc also decent (engines not proton's strongest point), handles great and its a safecar. If you ask me, its just the space which is the major issue.

older personas are even simpler and big but they are kinda thirsty. (new personas are quite decent, just small)

some time back i would have happily told you to go for it... now, well.... long as you are willing to deal with its random kerenah, sure... och issues have been 'solved' (lol sure 'solved'.... all they did is turn it into a consumable item to be replaced every 40k). ok car in general, its large with a huge arse, powerfulish but you do hear of it playing up every now and then.

makan petrol yes.... well known fact, campros are not exactly frugal compared to its competition.

Maintenance - cheap to maintains? And part expensive?
yes... lets just leave it as yes... for what it is, its cheap to maintain.

How about the performance
performance is relative.... so if you ask me... performance is sad BUT as a vehicle to get you from A-B adequate, not like its under powered or anything, its just not fast
