QUOTE(mastedo @ Aug 6 2025, 10:47 AM)

At the same time, I’m starting to feel like I don’t really want to buy a car right now.
Budget feels a bit tight, and it’s a big commitment.

*
Glad to see some level headed members here.

Most owners underbudget the running & maintenance cost after purchase.
Used continental is not for the faint-hearted.
Then your aging permanent 4WD XV too..

As always, for 2 car household, my recommendation is to have a used car & a new one. Eg
A. Fully paid 5 year old family MPV
B. New sedan/ hatchback under warranty 5 years
Then after 5 years, get a new unit. Years may vary according to loan period hopefully not to the stupidity of 9 πŸ™„

1. Brand : TOYOTA HARRIER RECOND / HONDA CRV (NEW)
2. Budget : 150-200K
7. Type : LOOKING FOR SUV
8. Remarks : Family got 3 sedan car, so prefer to survey SUV
*
Can ask what are the 3 sedan cars in your family?
And how will this new SUV be financed?

Also, who will be driving this SUV,
Avg distance covered day/month,
on what type of road,
any passengers/ cargo?

Is Petrol price a concern for you?
Live in landed property?
with Solar panels?

1. Brand : any brands but probably no chinese cars if possible
2. Budget : 100-130k max
3. New/Used/Unreg : new
7. Type : car or suv. preferably suv
8. Remarks : ICE only. No EV. maybe can consider hybrid. priority will be more towards safety (both passive and active systems), small family so prefer more spacious rear seat, ample boot space, relatively cheap to maintain.  mostly city driving. dont like those cars with screen only to operate aircon etc. (just seen the facelift X50, otherwise that will be perfect)
*
New SUV exclude EV

After removing Chinese models yourself, not much choice left

1. Brand : Toyota/Mazda/BMW/Audi
2. Budget : <190k
3. New/Used/Unreg : New and Used
4. Specs : As long as not too kosong spec
5. Transmission : Auto
6. NA or FI : Okay with either one
7. Type : SUV
8. Remarks : For wife, baby on the way. Was looking at X1, Mazda 3 Hatchback and CX-30, Audi Q3 and A4. Decided to put Audi at the bottom of the list due to maintenance concern. Currently leaning more to X1
*
For wife with newborn, you willing to risk getting her a used continental? 😳

What car does your wife prefer?

Prefer smaller size compared to X3/X70/CRV
Probably a B-segment SUV/C-segment sedan
Less maintenance headache
*
Lowest risk of maintenance headache get new.

CX-30, Corolla Cross although classified as C-Segment their rear seats not exactly spacious so best to bring baby car seat along to see if can fit easy.

Sedans would be lower, unless your wife and you are athletic strong back muscles for baby and stuff, can plank > 3min 😬

For me, if growing family and have expertise for used car will go for Toyota Voxy, Honda Stepwgn.

I won't touch X90 till Proton upgrade engine to 4cyl unit

was told by Mazda that CX8 will be discontinued in 2026.
still make sense to get it?
*
One of my friends managed to get the old 1.8NA HR-V at 105K before the new 1.5T launched at 130+K. The old HR-V is excellent value for money and parts remains plentiful

CX-8 is using the same 2.5NA engine as CX-5 hence support shouldn't be an issue. You need to decide if you wanna wait for the CX-80 which might see a significant pricre hike.

Went to see Chery showroom last time, kinda attracted to Tiggo 8 PHEV, new model. Inb4 they change the leather seat to kinda suede leather (this I like) and bigger HU kinda facelifted X50, as well as speedometer screen also like x50.

Believe so, got 3 row of seats. But expect the 3rd row purely for kids size
*
If you're not interested in those kids size 3rd row, the Tiggo7 Phev 5 seater with exactly the same engine, drivetrain is 30K cheaper and better equipped - front fog, sunroof πŸ™„, heads up but with smaller 18" rims

for daily driving some occasional travel.
new Mazda 1.5 at ~RM120K

Traditional Japanese brand (Honda, Toyota or Mazda)
RM 120K -130K.
Prefer new
ICE. Not EV. Can consider hybrid.
Hatchback. Will consider sedan or compact SUV
Space is not important. Prefer compact size
ADAS with adaptive cruise control at low speed is preferred.
*
Why have a minimum spend of 120K, for status?
Anyway, what's your transportation needs - Daily passengers? How far do you drive daily. How fast on highways

Toyota Raize is a solid A-segment choice
user posted image
Sold in Japan for ard Yen2M
Here RM73K

Another A-Segment SUV would be CX-3
Other B-segment options - TiggoCross, X50, HR-V 1.5L

Small hatch you can also test drive City or even Myvi to see if their specs and low speed ACC is implemented to your liking.

Not driving fast (within speed limit), just ~45 km daily commute of mixed highway and heavy traffic.

Perodua don't have low speed ACC. Honda City only has low speed ACC on hybrid (not preferred)
*
Yup, Ativa Alza ACC is from 30-125kmh only.
Not sure if Yaris Cross is All-Speed ACC and if P2 Nexis variant launching next month will have it

Can see you're going after the X50, presumably for its Intelligenct Cruise Control - all speed ACC Including up to 3 seconds full stop before resuming.

Can share if this is applicable for all variants including the 86K Executive?

checked out the Tiggo Cross and X50.
X50 feel smoother.
City also feels spacious but interior is dated.
Vios will go check it out
*
Since you rarely change car and keep > 10 years,
resale value is probably not that relevant.
Hence do you intend to take advantage of the massive discounts for year end cars and register one by Dec 2025?

Eg X50 can probably try aim for > 10K discount for higher variants? πŸ€”

2. Budget : 40-50k
3. New/Used/Unreg : new
5. Transmission : AT

ask for general advice on some car financial advice.

buy the proton saga first, loan it for 7 years, own it for 3 years, then sell it off as the value will still be there,

add in some extra money for a down payment the car that I initially wanted to get,

main priority is petrol consumption,
current car is very old and it's a 2.4 Liter which my dad bought over from a friend, it drinks too much petrol and I can't handle the fuel price.
How is your usage of current car. How many passengers, distance per day, city/ highway, fast or slow drive, etc

Budget 50K new car can get Axia, Bezza, Saga, Persona.
Low fuel consumption get Perodua.
Second hand value also Perodua.
Best is Axia Rahmah 22K if can drive manual just take 3 yr loan.

Which car u initially wanted ? πŸ€”

I may decided against selling it and instead, keeping it long term, so anyway 7 year loan is still feasible for me because 5 year loan isn't too much to my commitments liking

I initially wanted to get Omoda, I mean technically I could afford it, because in about 1-2 months I will get increment salary of 2K, which this 2K I have no use for it which is extra money.
Can ask for new loan structure next year?

Salary increment 2K (before tax?) is not a lot. Better put aside for investment eg taxes, legal fees, renovations for property purchase.
