Which year?

Teana? Spaghetti handling, gearbox overheating issue. Other than that it's fine.
Sonata LF? Underpowered, recall for brakes + steering + ABS system, higher maintenance cost due to rarity of car
Kia K5? 2011-2013 models are known for engine failure, performance like the Sonata is lacking, maintenance is about the same as Sonata too

You're going to need to face facts.
1. Your budget isn't enough for your demands.
2. You can buy cheaper/older/better spec cars but be prepared for gremlins, if you're lucky will be minor things that will sort out once you do normal maintenance.
3. You need to be more car savvy else repair bills will be too much to handle.

Get a Persona/Gen2.
They're as cheap as Saga BLM/Wira but with better comfort, safety and looks.
In general if compared to most brands Proton cars aren't fuel efficient but since you don't drive alot then it's fine.

I'm looking at 2015 and above models. K5 engine failure? Serious? That's surprising given the fact that kia is one of the most reliable brand

if you've done your research then you may choose base on what you think is worth it in your mind.
what i am doing is like first aid to new car buyers to avoid banging wall by getting something totally useless.

there are compromises to koreans.
generally build quality and specs are high.
however 2.0 korean d-segment somehow always loses out to japanese counterparts in terms of performance/fuel consumption.
also generally their parts are more expensive due to weaker demand and lower sales numbers.

Is it used car from dealer lot or from merc showroom?
I don't remember whats the name for Merc but BMW it is called Premium Selection.
Basically cars customer buy/rent via lease or BMW credit with buy back clause.
Usually such cars to maintain quality for used car buyers got certain conditions like sell back within 3-5yrs, must go to 3s service, no modifying, etc.
Then they sell on these cars to customers wanting to buy the cars cheaper.

Car loan is only for cars age 0-10.
Above that you've gotta buy cash or use personal/business loan.

I’m planning to get a used car from sime Darby auto selection Glenmarie. It is still under warranty for 2 years. Should I bring to the work shop to check before signing the contract?

Altis is abit complicated.
Older ones gonna be demanding in terms of repair.
Just stick to simplier things from Proton.
Just stay away from the 1.3 Gen2

After reading sifus post, these are the recommended/most mentioned cars, within 50k+- Budget.

2015 Proton INSPIRA 2.0(A) @ RM 43,000~49,000
2018 Volkswagen VENTO 1.6 COMFORTLINE (A) @ RM48,800
2013 Mitsubishi LANCER 2.4 SPORTBACK (A) @ RM48,900
2014 YEAR MADE Honda CIVIC 1.8 S (A) @ RM 54,800
2014 Toyota COROLLA 1.8 ALTIS NEW FACELIFT (A) @ RM58,800
and
no love for Honda City?
2015~2017 Honda City @ RM50,000+
I saw few on mudah, year 2017 with RM49,800. Is it legit?

Questions now, among all these cars, which is the one sifus will recommend/buy? Why?

Thank you smile.gif

Define your "better deal".

From personal experience, the average gen1 Altis has comparable NVH with new Proton/Perodua, despite the decade gap.

I would beg to differ that a 1st gen Altis is more complicated/demanding to repair than a Proton.

Thats why the Gen1 2000s Altis destroyed the Civic so hard Honda had to completely redesign into the Civic FD whistling.gif

In terms of repair its about the same tbh, that Altis was so common back then (like the current City/Civic, everywhere also got) I think most mechanic will not have trouble with it

Hi, I need some suggestion for my second car.

1. Brand: Anything except Perodua and Proton
2. Budget: will be throwing in 20k as DP, the rest will be going through HP, ideally car price ard 50-60K, used/new doesnt matter
3. New
4. Specs: Avoid the lowest spec
5. Transmission: AT/CVT
6. NA or FI: Doesn't matter
7. Type: Hatchback, Sportback, Sedan

Any suggestion? I saw Vento was mentioned few times here. What about its reliability since it's a VW? Jetta 1.4 2017 is also around the same range, is it worth considering?

Vento/Polo Sedan uses NA engine while gearbox is 6-speed auto from Toyota subsidiary, not gonna blow you away like DSG but much more reliable.

Jetta 1.4 is great car, I test drove one when I was looking for a car and it feels completely different to our usual Jap B/C segments. The way the torque comes in and you just gather speed is addictive. But I didn't dare buy because if anything on it goes wrong, I can't afford to fix it. VW reliability is 50/50, if you have a spare car/cash to cover you when problems arise, then only worth considering.

2018 VW Vento 1.6 - you can also consider pre-reg cars like this Vento. Unlike most VW's this uses a regular gearbox and engine (similar to Toyota Vios) so you get good reliability from this car while enjoying the comfort and design of a conti car. The car still has warranty and is practically new, no need headache buying actual used cars where the car has been used/abused by the previous owners.

Another two you can think about is either Renault Fluence or Proton Perdana (discussed below), Fluence if you want to stay close to your 30k budget but want a better car in terms of age and upkeep, or Perdana if you really want a budget D-segment car. 2011 Accord is a decent car but it is practically the same car as the Perdana but you can have it cheaper and younger, in some cases with warranty left over.
Hi, actually my friend works in the 2nd car garage so the choices are quite limited. However, these two choices took me into consideration:
2013 Kia Forte SX 1.6 Full spec, Mileage 77k, Full price around Rm30k (OTR)
2011 Honda Accord 2.4 iVTec VTI Sedan, Full leather, Mileage 63k, Full price around Rm50k (OTR)

Of course, with a friend working there I might get a bit of discount. I'm never owned a KIA so it might harder to make comparison between this 2. Need some kind advice on this issue.

Hey Sifu,
Planning to get an used SUV car, observing with personal preference in order starting from Volvo XC60 T5 (my priority as prefer lower roadtax), BMW X6 and Kia Sorento, May i know the maintenance is really costly ? is it recommended for long journey?

I've two Toyota Altis with me, its serve my family well, no major issue, just the kids growing and need more spacious car, hence feeling to change SUV, My brother owned CRV turbo, no offence, i feel just ok as noticed it is slightly under power
