Gum chewing stimulates the release of saliva which washes the mouth and reduces the chances of developing bad breath and plaque, which is associated with a myriad of dental problems. But what to do if we have braces on teeth? Can you chew gum with braces? If you have any experiance, please answer. This post has been edited by Peter81: Jun 27 2016, 12:58 AM

The release of saliva may not necessarily help to reduce bad breathe and plaque. If you have plaque on the surface or between your teeth/braces, the saliva combined with the plaque and bacteria calcifies and form calculus (hardened plaque).
My dentist advised me not to chew gum for the duration I have my braces. No reason given and I didn't ask further.

Dentist just wanna play safe, but honestly no issues unless you usually chew your gum with the sides of your molar tooth
