i don't think the 1060 is going to beat the 980. Here's why.

760 never beat the 680

960 never beat the 780

its a logical move for nVidia to keep their product stack streamlined so that people know what to expect in next line of cards.

Its basically the same with the x80Ti as well

970 was similar to 780Ti
1070 is similar to 980Ti.

The is a pattern to nVidia's relase so its quite predictable.

Wow the official numbers for 1060 seems that it can knock GTX980 and let RX480 weep in tears. Looks like my prediction is wrong.

Titan X Pascal has been announced to be 60% faster than Titan X Maxwell.

I predict will be 25% faster than 1080 GTX

20% increment over the 1080 by Titan XP. Lower than my prediction of 25%. Maybe it will overclock better, but thermals are bit on high side. This looks to be a throttle fest.
