helo guys, Im planning to change my gpu here, currently using old ati 7950 asus top.

Now since my current card can still play witcher 3 at ultra without hairworks (40fps) and doom at ultra with 60 Fps with vulkan on, I wonder the upcoming games will be async compute heavy.

Since people already see the benefits of AC, (before vulkan my doom avg fps is 45fps) is it a good move if I move to Nvdia now? Im planning to buy the upcoming 1060 or 1070. But from what i read nvdia didnt benefit much from AC. Anyone can clarify this?

No one knows for sure, but for now Async will only be used if the developer choose to implement it. Upcoming games with Async will be Civ VI. BF1 and Mankind Divided will have DX12 but not sure about Async.

Pascal does support Async so you dont have to worry as they will improve support for it over time, it just implement differently from AMD GCN.

Hopefully, its just that this article got me worried sick, I already have enough cash to buy 1070, but then if Pascal is physically nerfed without Async Compute shaders then I wont make the jump.

Pascal Async Compute

But as far as Benchmark goes, I do hope newer drivers can push Pascal to fully utilize Async Compute, you see the feature itself made me experience the BIGGEST performance improvement in terms of driver optimization, not even overclocking can beat that improvement.

Can you imagine playing DOOM at 60fps in 1080p on ATI 7950?? A 4++ year old card?

This alone made me think that developers should think 99 times before dismissing the advantage of Async Compute for their latest games.

Since RX480 are the only latest AMD cards right now but poor mid range performance, I only have NVIDIA to vote for, but seriously hoping that NVIDIA can rectify the issue.

Can anyone share their performance boost for DOOM with Vulkan? or no difference for now?

That's an old article. Now that a definitive synthetics benchmark for DX12 with Async Compute support in the form of 3DMark Time Spy is out, you should check out those result and reviewers analysis. Already a few and the more reviews and analysis will be out in the coming days.

Thanks bro, mind to share the link, i cant seem to find the direct link when i googled, all mixed up with old testing.

the gains that you see on DOOM for AMD is also from Vulkan api (AMD perf bad in openGL) and not only from Async, Vulkan also utilize dedicated Async shaders which is a feature of GCN.

Pascal has new dynamic load balancer and improved pre-emption. they dont have Async shaders but that isnt necessary for Async Compute. they just used a different approach. from the benchmarks in Time Spy or DOOM Vulkan, you can see that it still yield decent gains when Async is turned on.

if you're interested you can read more here: https://www.reddit.com/r/nvidia/comments/4s...shaders_nvidia/

I see, Based from the articles given I can see the slight improvements, but not as much as ATI IMHO.

Lets see if NVIDIA can ramp the performance later in the future, since these cards are supposed to work better at 4k, it would be a shame if they cant utilize the AC for better 4k experience.

Since im buying 4 K monitor as well, I dont see other option than NVIDIA cards for now. laugh.gif

Oh shit thank god I havent buy pascal yet...

New chip with DRAM embedded, HBM RAM?

Plus hardware based Async Compute?

Time to collect some moneh... laugh.gif
