Hi all. I've been following this thread from the start and thanks to all for some very useful info.

My question is how practical are either the Panasonic or the Epson for use in a room that is not fully light controlled? The room is relatively small, 13L x 10W x 10H with light coming in from a small 3' wide ceiling height window. My initial plan is to put the projector on one wall and project it on a basic screen on the other wall.

The quick answer is that it is practical, however you will have to increase the lumens to get a good picture.  In this mode, you loose colour fidelity and the bulb life in this mode is reduced.  I watched 4 hours of 101 and 102 dalmations with bright light filtering into the room using the Living Room mode and it was great.  The epson performed flawlessly.  Even if you had a window, as long as you can draw some heavy curtains over it, you should be OK.

The real question is: Do you intend to use the projector as you would a normal TV?  I.e. turn on for 30mins of CNN then turn off, then turn on 30mins for kids cartoon then turn off.  I think a projector is not meant for this type of usage and you would only be asking for trouble if the projector was treated this way.

Hope this helps.

jasonlky, thanks for the answer. I was also thinking that with a smaller room, the projector will be closer to the wall so brightness will be a bit better as well.

I don't plan to use this as a TV, I probably won't even hook it up to Astro. There are two other TVs in the house for that purpose. However I will hook it up to the computer for some of the other stuff I do.

Is your hook up a permanent mount? How do you handle multiple inputs ie. if you have more than one DVI/HDMI inputs?

While the Panasonic may or may not have quality control issues, what is important is how the company handles complaints and ultimately, their customer. I'm impressed enough that they were willing to give a full refund for a faulty unit, that's very unusual in Malaysia.
