Wow .... spend all that money on equipment, but DIY on screen?

A good 2.35:1 screen branded, 127" wide, costs at least 12k, If I could get at least 50% the performance of that with RM500, That's RM11,500 saved.

The cost of rufurbishing the room.

Haha.

I donno why, but I seem to like you more everytime you reply. Kekekeke  rclxms.gif  rclxms.gif

Now, your statment is really true. If I were to spend that kinda money, if not RM10k on screen, I'd at least spend RM3k (10%) on the screen.

It is like driving a BMW 5 series and use Simex tyres. Although either Perillys or Michilin (note that I can't spell both names but Simex as I am on the Simex league) or Simex can still make your car moves, but heck... 1 sen price 1 sen goods la.

Oh, dirt, after this, I think I better follow you... In fact worse than you as I don't have a projector even...  cry.gif  cry.gif  cry.gif

Any idea where to get a 3k 127" wide 2.35:1 screen?

Our damage is already around 100k, and still haven't termasuk renovating shocking.gif

The RS-MaddMudd is good enough, at least for a year or two. smile.gif

You know... if you have spent RM100k, then you should spend at least RM10k on the screen.
You need a nice gray wolf or fox or dog screen but not Goo Paint. Don't save on that money. If you go to Projector Central and read, they did give you a rule of thumb on the screen.

Why? I started reading on screens when I got to know a 110" (white) commercial screen costs about RM3k. This was from an AV shop in Damansara. From that time, I know I only can afford DIY. But for you, you already 90% complete... why spoil the 10%?
Don't "jar" me like that la...

Some dude with 94" DIY screen and sever ambient lighting, 4805 on low lamp mode CLICK!

I see No reason spending that much (10k) now. Making a DIY screen for a cheaper price is good enough for 1 or 2 years. The projector doesn't need help with blacks, and because the blacks are so low and deep, The whites pop out, and at 800 lumens at it's very brightest (Dynamic mode), it has a higher lumen count compared to other 1080p projectors below RM30k. The Optoma HD81 does 650 lumens in its 'best' mode, while the JVC does around 700, yet, HD81 owners have theirs on 150" screens, some DIY and they're not changing their screens just yet. I feel that the DIY screen will do good for at least a year or two.

Besides the lens that I'm getting will improve brightness on the 2.35:1 screen. Therefore, again I'll be using a DIY screen for quite some time.

Of course karaoke sessions need light, tongue.gif

I'll just on the 2 scone lights at the back of the room which doesn't effect the screen. Everyone's happy. Woo~

I'll wait a couple of years before I upgrade to a proper screen. The paint mixture has a gain of 1.3, which is approximately the same as most branded gray screens.

Let me offer my very humble take on screens.

Screens are an important part of the HT... insofar as you need one!!  In my honest opinion, screens and cables share one thing in common.... there is a lot of misinformation in it and kiasu type of selling to pressure people into spending unnecessarily.  A typical fabric used for home decoration would cost RM4 per metre, but when one of the manufacturers relabel it as screen, the price goes up tenfold.  And just like cables.... screens just beg to be DIYed due to its simplicity.  A little reserarch on the net and you are good to go.

Unless you have a problematic room with a lot of ambient light or very low lumen projector e.g. CRT projectors, u should not have to be forced to pay the unsightly prices demanded by the manufacturers and resellers.
*
Correct.

There are some people in the AVSforum using laminate DIY screens for their single CRT projectors. Not Stacked, not blended, but single. That'll be around 350 lumens for a Sony G90 CRT, which member Clarence, in AVS has. His screen is 10 feet wide and he's never been happier. My Home Theater has no lighting issues, no sunlight since we have overlapping curtains (Both blackout) and we have only 4 sconces for lighting. Turn them off and close the curtains and my room can be a batcave. I don't see why the JVC, a 750 lumens at it's best mode, can't handle a 10.5 feet wide 1.3 gain homemade screen. These people use 500 dollar screens on their $30kUSD CRT projectors, mine is $6k.

There's a manufacturer in US, SMX screens, they used to sell their fabric for DIY. Now they don't. Their screens are 1.16 gain accoustically transparent screens. Many people are happy with it.

DIY ain't bad. I'll be happy with it, I really think so.

There are many paint formula in avsforum, and those people have made many details comparison against commercial screens. Why don't we just emulate whatsoever to our liking? rclxub.gif

Some like grey, silver and white screen. Those are to your preference. icon_rolleyes.gif

I have built my DIY screen with merely less than RM150, and my Z2 costed RM8K (4 years ago) I am very happy with the results.  whistling.gif

heyyuh guys! My HD1 arrived at showroom last week, still unopened, wanna go today and check it out.

Went to see McIntosh's projector at bangkok, noisy thing, and the image was merely good. The Marantz VP-11S1 and the DLA-HD1 on the other hand had awesome setups.

Short review of JVC DLA-HD1 video performance.

JVC has always made magnificent projectors. So, it's a big deal when a new comes out. Enter the JVC DLA-HD1, the newest member in JVC's D-ILA family. JVC has been known to create boxy, and ugly designs for the projectors, but the HD1 and it's brethren the HD10k is different, they're pretty handsome actually! The JVC DLA-RS1 and the HD1 have no difference, despite the fact that they are sold through divisions(The RS1 is sold through JVC's Professional division while the HD1 is sold through it's consumer division). JVC claims a 15000:1 CR without a dynamic iris along with other goodies, lets see how it performs.

I pop in one of the most beautiful transfers in Blu-ray, Happy Feet. The movie looks good, and sounds pretty good too. What do I see? The first thing I find out is the deepness and neutralness of the blacks, as well as the color accuracy made by this JVC, it is truly astounding. The colors just pop up in 3D-like motion in the scene where Mumble is being chased by the seal, while the blacks really show in one chapter where they find lovelace near an abandoned site, this scene is really dark and you can really see the blacks on the Killer Whales. The whites are bright too, without a hint of grey at all, just bright whites.

Moving on to detail, we popped in The Departed Blu-ray. In one scene where they celebrate graduation day, there is a close up of a shirt and you can see the weavings and stitches in shirt very clearly, sharp and clean. In Happy Feet again, there are some dark scenes which showcase it's blacks and details. The scene is dark as it should be, but the blacks aren't crushed and so detail is not lost in many things. Unlike the Sony VPL-VW50, the JVC's blacks are neutral and not bluish, while the Mitsubishi HC5000 is slightly grey.

I see no hint of SDE at all, maybe because it's a 1080p projector, but the Mitsubishi HC5000 like many LCD projectors tend to have visible SDE up close. On a 120" screen I saw no sign of SDE at 2 feet, only when I went as close as half a feet did I see SDE. This was not the case with the HC5000, I saw SDE at 2 feet, almost clearly. The menu is simple, and well laid out, test patterns was a nice touch. The remote is fine, with backlighting, but a bit too plain when the projector is that flashy.

The Projector is brighter than the HC5000 or the Sony Pearl, easily projecting a 10-foot wide image with very very acceptable picture. There are 2 HDMI inputs, one composite, one Component, and one S-Video. Those who have spent this much should probably invest in a Pre/Pro+Amplifier or receiver.

I didn't have time to check on the de-interlacing capabilities, its good to note that it uses Gennum's VXP technology. This will be done sometime this week or next week with Pioneer's excellent DV989-AVi DVD player, one of the few DVD players that can output 480i.

All in all I think JVC has done an incredible job with this one. This certainly puts it a notch above the Sony VPL-VW50 and VW-100(Really! We'll do a shootout soon. Farhan), Mitsubishi's HC5000, Epsons Home/Pro Cinema 1080, as well as Panasonic's AE1000. It's closest competitor would be Sharp's $10,000USD XV-Z21000 and Marantz's RM57,000 VP-11S1. At RM22,999 it is much cheaper than the two and should definitely be worth a look if your planning to spend that much.

The JVC has earned psp _BOY's 'Breakthrough Performance' award as well as the 'OMG! Check out that Black level' award. tongue.gif laugh.gif

Equipment used:

Projector: JVC DLA-HD1, Sony VPL-VW50, Mitsubishi HC5000.
Cables: PCOM HDMI, IXOS Interconnects, etc.
Blu-ray player: Sony BDP-S1

AV Receiver: Yamaha RX-2600V (I'll be using the Krell Pre/pre and amps next time, dammit! Farhan)

QUOTE(jasonlky @ Jun 12 2007, 10:39 AM)
My take on 1080.  After a much needed hiatus from visiting AV shops, I recently wandered into an AV shop while in Singapore and was able to sample the VPL50 and together with the new BluRay player.  The shopowner tells me that the setup in the room... audio, screen, furniture, projector, lighting etc was recently refurbished for a cool sum of SGD500k.  Apparently that was supposed to impress me.

He wanted to show off the BluRay player and the VPL50.  So I was invited to sit and was told to wait to be amazed.  I am not sure if its because of the demo discs, but I just did not like the picture.  Yes the picture has superb clarity, each grain of sand, each pine needle, each strand of hair is clearly visible, or should I say... painfully visible.  But who actually views the world through their eyes like that?

I would say that the picture is unrealistic and detracts the enjoyment of the movie.  Not at all like the cinema... more like a videogame or watching home movies made with my Sony Handycam (not HD).  The shopowner then popped in a few 1080 movies and still I was not enjoying myself as I should have been.  I left not long after, not forgetting to thank the shopowner for the hospitality.

My purpose is not to start another resolution war, but just want to see if anyone else shares this opinion.  I think that I am just not used to the new stuff after a steady diet of 720p.

Might go to Mediaplex again tomorrow to see the Oh so wonderful HD1 again. I love that baby wub.gif

Hmm, I wonder if the Sony VPL-AW15 will be better than the HD70. Projectorreview's review was a bit 'so-so' for this projector. Ain't bright enough, good for screens before 100", but the blacks were good for a projector at this price point. It didn't get a hot product award though. Sad.

Kennot have the RCAs hanging in free air..... if not connected then you are not grounding the projector at all.

If its really a gounding problem, then just have the one or all three RCAs plugged to the earth socket on the wall.  See if this solves the problem.
