By HD I presume you are referring High Definition support.  I.e, 1080i or 1080p signal input from your selected source to the projector.  Most projectors will accept 1080i input, and the newer ones will accept 1080p input.  However the output will depend on the native resolution of the projector, a 480p projector will only be able to project upto a maximum of 480lines, even if you feed it 1080p.  A quick check of the projector's specification will telly you if the projector will accept HD1080 sources.

Only native 1080p projectors will faithfully reproduce the HD1080 source.  For budget of RM3000, go back a page or 2 and you will find some recommendation from Timothyy and myself.

Cheers

Aiyo...
Why ppl always take shortcuts and just one button away and get all the answers?

We have been talking about this 1080p, 1080i, 720p many times even in this thread alone and many other thread as well. I even posted a link for a video explaination on the above.

So, for jackygwh, for info, part of the fun is getting to know what you are getting. You build the love slowly. Then, only you will appreciate what you got.

Actually, I was planning to get PS3 or Xbox 360 or Wii but think think think... I am already a big fan of couch potato ever since I got my projector... and if I get those... I will not leave the sofa for even longer time.

Aiyo, I dunno how to answer about how to read the product specs. Basically you have to do your own research and visit the various user forums to get your answer. Google will be a good place to start your journey. Forum wise, I have found AVSforums to be helpful.

However if you want a projector to fully support the PS3, then you will need a 1080p projector. And these babies start at RM12k till more that RM250k. I will recommend you to look at Epson's EMP TW1000 or Panasonics AE1000. There are also very good offerings from Optoma, Infocus and Benq. And a forum member swears by his Sony. Take your pick

All the equipment I am using can be found in my sig. BTW do you have your new projector yet? Give us your review!!

I have just increased my investment in the projector by buying the Ratshack sound meter and the Avia HT Guide. Should be here in one weeks time. With shipping, it cost me USD77.48.

I was a newbie once and so I know the feeling. Please treat google as your best friend and you will be able to learn a lot. Just to start you off.....

1080, 720 and 420 refers to the vertical resolution of the picture.... i.e 1080 means 1080 lines from top to bottom, 720 means 720 lines and so on. So all things being equal, more lines = better resolution. Standard DVD only has 480 lines and HD upto 1080 lines.

Now for the i and p.
The i = interlaced, where the lines that we discussed above is divided into even and odd numbered lines. First the even numbered lines are scanned, next the odd numbered lines are scanned and so on and on. Because this is done very quickly.... 30 to 60 frams per second, you do not see the interlacing. Your normal TV is done this way. Thus the name interlace.

The p = progressive, where each line is scanned in sequence from top to bottom to create a complete picture. Thus the name progressive scan.

BTW The PS3 is indeed powerful, the nvidia chip used is impressive, but a PC could go all the way up to 1920 resolution, and this was 2 years ago. Current generation fx cards for the PC can come close to rivaling the speed of PS3. So the PS3's 1080 is nothing to shout about. What is nice is that Sony has been nice to include the ability to play Blu-ray DVDs. So by default you have a HD ready DVD player.... nice. Now if only we could just stroll down to our local DVD store to get Blu-ray titles!!

Hi Bro Jason,

No I wasn't referring to you, bro, I know what you are using for ur HT ... just stating dat if going for tua kong display then audio must be commensurate to video, no point skimping after spending so much was de point I was trying to make.

Sad ah , wat to do making a living always come first then family after tat well hobbies are like fleeting glimpses of ...

Everyonr swears by progressive. Most new DVD players and projectors will come with a de-interlacer. So it will convert the interlaced signal which is the format of most material to a progressive image. I think progresive is more film like, while interlaced is more TV like. View both and come up with your own opinion.

The thing is, there are only a handful of shops that sell HD material and even then there is a hefty premium on the price because of its novelty. Once it becomes mainstream in Malaysia and is comoditised, then the prices will drop. Still can't see myself paying over RM100 for a movie while Standard DVD is going for less than half that price (ahem DVD no need to saylah). So if you must be the among the first few adopters of HD, then you must pay for that priviliege. For those like me who don;t have the privelege, will have to wait for better prices, better availability and better choices. Make no mistake HD is coming, just have to be patient. Let the market decide HDDVD or Blu-Ray or both.... Don't wanna end up like last time... with Betamax and VHS at home.

Good things come to those who wait. For those who can't wait and there is plenty of HD material over the net.... free.

3 weeks ago I've decided to buy the same Epson TW700 through Jason. The decision was made after reading most of his post on this forum.

So three weeks ago I meet Jason and paid him the deposit. Off all places it was at LCCT [Air-Asia Airport]. I was busy most weekend and he wasn't in Malaysia most weekdays, if I'm not mistaken he's a IT Consutant of some sort in Bangkok. He's seems nice and cute too [but he's married though]. The meeting was short, but from my impresion was he was trustworthy.

Since I'm only dealing with him not the Epson salesperson I need him to be trustworthy. I'm not familar with KL so that was my only option. In another word I basically handed him that deposit money with no recipt whatsoever. Risky but the HD dream must be realised.

There's only one week delay from the original ETA, and yesterday I've recieved my projector from Jason. Not from him directly, but from his father. Mr Leong Senior. So it took about 3 weeks for the projector to arrive. This time the meeting place was at KL Sentral, Departure Area. Mr Leong Sr. only took one go at counting the RM5K+ of RM50 bills. He's that good or the fact that I look very trustworthy.

All this while I didn't post anything regarding this because if anything went wrong I can't bear the embaressment of being duped even on the net. Thankfully Jason Is a very trustworthy person. At one time I even offered him a few hundered ringgit [a-hole tax] for all the thing he has to do to buy the projector and send it to me. But he refuses and stress that he's not doing this for money. What a nice guy.

So semalam arrived from the office, damn box was heavy. I fired up the projector by feeding a signal from my XBOX [old one]. The old xbox can output 720p signal [with the right cable] in XBMC, hence free upscaled DVD, fired up a few animes [xvid], . . . and then Lord of The Ring; Return of the King. Looking at the projected image takes somes adjusting especially when one is so accustomed to a 20" TV. For the time being I only projected to a wall, diagonally around 100", small room. Since it got 5 times bigger than the TV you start to feel that everything got blurred as it got so massive, this happens when you focuses on a single point in the projected image, old habbit die hard as I only accustomed to only focuses on a 1.33 feet˛ [1'*1.33'] of viewing space and now it's around 30 feet˛. But after a while I realised that the only way you can enjoy it is by taking the image as a whole, screw that TV state of mind.

Muck around with the settings and fired up the test pattern. I think the red one is misaligned by one pixel to the left or both blue and green to the right. This can only be seen when I'm upclose to the projector. No biggie, I think the software that I'll be using later can handle this through software setting and I'm not that picky.

In the end I can't thank Jason and Mr. Leong Sr. enough for helping me with my HD dream. You, Jason have made me once again believes that there are still good in this evil infested internet.

Thank You,
and I still don't know how to repay you. If youre in the Putrajaya-Serdang are call me I'll buy you breakfast/dinner/lunch whatever.
